‘Ghoulies 1&2′ Blu-ray Review (101 Films)

5 April 2016 4:28 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Ghoulies

Stars: Peter Liapis, Lisa Pelikan, Michael Des Barres, Jack Nance, Mariska Hargitay, Scott Thomson, Ralph Seymour | Written by Luca Bercovici, Jefery Levy | Directed by Luca Bercovici

Ghoulies 2

Stars: Damon Martin, Royal Dano, Phil Fondacaro, J. Downing, Kerry Remsen, Donnie Jeffcoat, Dale Wyatt | Written by Charlie Dolan, Dennis Paoli, Luca Bercovici | Directed by Albert Band

For my film-loving friends and I, Ghoulies and its immediate sequel were almost rites of passage growing up – I distinctly remember renting them from not only the local video shop but also that strange guy that used to park on the street corner renting tapes out of his boot (or, if he was more successful, the back of a transit van). You know the one, he’d have the craziest VHS tapes you’d ever seen – Class of Nuke Em High, Black Roses, The Toxic Avenger, Ghoulies… all films that sold themselves on artwork alone. »

Rewind This! – The Review: A Look Back at the Days of VHS

10 March 2016 5:53 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

I admit it, I’m a sentimental old fart.  I get choked up and maudlin very often, when I think of family and friends, a moment in time when I realized the tragedy life can bring to us, or the joy.  I tear up at the movies regularly, or reading certain passages in books. But I never thought I would weep at the loss of a video system.  If you read We Are Movie Geeks regularly you must be aware of the video revolution of the 1980s, when VHS players and recorders found a place in almost every home in America.  I hope you recall the early days when VHS was neck and neck with Betamax, a technically better system. Remember the days of Mom and Pop video rental stores when almost anyone could open a store front, and with a collection of VHS tapes start making money?  As one of the many, »

Blu-ray Review: Troll / Troll 2 Double Feature

21 January 2016 7:16 AM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

In the wake of the success of Joe Dante’s classic Gremlins in the mid-’80s, movie theaters were flooded with low-budget horror movies about pint-sized creatures wreaking havoc on unsuspecting humans. No one took better advantage of this phenomenon than Charles Band, who would build a dynasty of films about little monsters first with his Empire Pictures and later with Full Moon Features—everything from Ghoulies to Puppet Master, Demonic Toys to Dolls. One of Empire’s first fantasy horror films about little monsters, 1986’s Troll makes its HD debut on Scream Factory’s Blu-ray alongside its notorious sequel, Troll 2, often considered one of the worst movies ever made.

The original Troll, directed by makeup effects legend John Carl Buechler in his feature debut, tells the story of the Potter family, recent transplants to a San Francisco apartment complex who begin to notice strange goings-on in their building, »

Artwork revealed for ‘Puppet Master: Axis Termination’

19 January 2016 11:11 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Since its inception in 1989, the Puppet Master series has been one of my go-to horror series. With classic characters like Blade, Jester, Pinhead, Tunneler and Leech Woman the Full Moon franchise was a staple of my video-store youth and a staple of my home cinema collection today. And now the series is returning for yet another installment – the 11th – once again directed by Charles Band, Puppet Master: Axis Termination.<

Set in Berlin during World War II, Puppet Master: Axis Termination continues the Axis Trilogy, which began with Puppet Master: Axis of Evil and Puppet Master: Axis Rising. – all of which are set in the same time period as David DeCoteau’s classic Puppet Master III: Toulon’s Revenge.

With Band currently running a crowdfunding campaign for Puppet Master: Axis Termination , the Full Moon founder has released some fantastic new promo artwork. Check it out below:

Blu-ray Review: The Dungeonmaster / Eliminators Double Feature

5 January 2016 10:12 AM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

In their ongoing quest to bring most of Charles Band’s Empire Films from the ’80s to Blu-ray, Scream Factory is releasing another double feature containing two of the studio’s better efforts: 1984’s The Dungeonmaster (aka Ragewar) and Eliminators from 1986.

Though omnipresent in the horror genre since Dead of Night in 1945 (or even Waxworks in 1924 if you’re willing to count it), the anthology film has rarely extended into the realm of sci-fi or fantasy—Heavy Metal aside, of course. One of the rare exceptions is The Dungeonmaster, an anthology that assembles the all-star team of Empire Pictures in the mid-’80s: Charles Band, John Carl Buechler, Dave Allen, Ted Nicolaou, Pater Manoogian and several others.

Originally intended as a single story that was expanded by necessity into an anthology, The Dungeonmaster follows computer programmer Paul Bradford (Jeffrey Byron, star of Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn), inventor of a »
