Born to Jacques Almaric, who has worked as an editorial journalist for the French newspapers Le Monde and Libération, and his wife Nicole Zand, a literary critic for Le Monde.
Mathieu's mother is from a Polish Jewish family, and was born in the Polish village where director Roman Polanski had lived with his family before World War II. Mathieu's father is of French background.
Has two sons, Antoine (b. 1997) and Pierre (b. 1999).

Spending two days in a hotel doing interviews is not my goal. No, I could be with my kids. I could be making love. That's real life.
