It’s the battle of the initials at the weekend box office, with N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton” outperforming “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” “Compton” pulled in $24 million in Friday receipts, putting it on track for a $57 million opening weekend, according to studio estimates.

After grossing close to $5 million from 2,264 screens in Thursday night previews, the Universal/Legendary effort expanded to 2,755 screens on Friday. Directed by F. Gary Gray, the biopic stars O’Shea Jackson as Ice Cube (his father), Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre and Jason Mitchell as Eazy-e. Cube and Dre serve as producers, in addition to Eazy-e’s widow Tomica Woods-Wright, Matt Alvarez and Scott Bernstein.

Universal had pegged “Compton” for an opening between $25 million and $29 million, about half the haul it’s now expected to generate. Made on a budget of $29 million, the hip-hoppin’ pic contributes to Universal’s huge year; the studio surpassed the »

‘Straight Outta Compton’ Rising to $50 Million Opening

14 August 2015 1:19 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Straight Outta Compton” is heading straight for a dominant opening weekend of nearly $50 million at the U.S. box office, according to early estimates Friday.

The music biopic about the influential rap group N.W.A is overperforming significantly with nearly double what Universal had been forecasting earlier this week, when it projected a weekend in the $25 million to $29 million range.

Friday’s total for “Straight Outta Compton” looked likely to come in the $18 million to $19 million range with a Friday-Sunday total in the $45 million to $49 million area. That’s more than triple for Friday’s total will be around $5 million for an opening around $15 million.

“‘Straight Outta Compton’ has become a total cross-over kind of movie that’s captured the zeitgeist with a real groundswell of people wanting to see it,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Rentrak. “There’s been growing anticipation for it all summer. Now that it’s out, »

First Ride Along 2 Trailer Sends Ice Cube And Kevin Hart To Miami

13 August 2015 9:54 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

After debuting the maiden poster for the anticipated action-comedy sequel earlier in the week, Universal has completed the one-two punch with today’s full-length trailer for Ride Along 2.

Reuniting the soon to be brothers-in-law Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) and James Peyton (21 Jump Street‘s Ice Cube), the footage sends the bumbling duo on a mission to the sun-kissed streets of Miami, and things get ridiculous in the best possible way. Striking all the chords of your standard buddy cop movie – over-the-top action and internal quarrelling – Ride Along 2 even features a wink and a nudge toward Universal’s Fast and the Furious franchise, replete with a well-timed cameo of its own.

Though the first film will go down as a critical dud, Universal, spurred by a $154 million turnover at the box office, is placing its faith in Hart and Cube once again for the sequel. Action comedies have traditionally »

'Ride Along 2' Trailer Brings Back Kevin Hart and Ice Cube

13 August 2015 9:01 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Kevin Hart and Ice Cube reunite once again in the first trailer for Universal Pictures' Ride Along 2, arriving in theaters January 15, 2016. We haven't seen anything from this sequel since last summer, when Kevin Hart and Ice Cube posted a video from the set. Thankfully we now finally get to see this all-star pairing in action with the first trailer, which indicates that this sequel may be an even bigger hit than its predecessor.

Kevin Hart and Ice Cube lead the returning lineup of Ride Along 2, the sequel to the blockbuster action-comedy that gave us one of the most popular comedy duos of this past decade. The story shifts from Atlanta to Miami, as Kevin Hart's Ben Barber and Ice Cube's James Payton team up for a new case. The original Ride Along became a box office hit last January, taking in $134 million from just a $25 million budget. »

Box Office: ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Heading to $40 Million-Plus Opening

11 August 2015 5:58 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Straight Outta Compton” is headed straight to the top of the U.S. box office with an opening weekend of more than $40 million in its sights.

That should more than double the opening for Warner Bros.’ spy drama “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” which carries plenty of star power with Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander.

The music biopic, focused on the groundbreaking rap group N.W.A, looks likely to keep Universal’s hot streak at the 2015 box office in tact following hits with “Jurassic World,” “Minions,” “Trainwreck,” “Furious 7” and “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

The most conservative estimates for “Straight Outta Compton,” co-financed by Legendary Pictures with a budget of $29 million, have placed the debut in the $25 million to $29 million range. Tracking is strongest among African-American and caucasian male audiences but Phil Contrino, VP and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com, said the movie is showing plenty of traction »

The Boys Are Back In First Poster For Ride Along 2

11 August 2015 12:02 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

One of last year’s sleeper comedy hits Ride Along generated $154 million on a budget of $25 million. Those types of numbers send sequels quickly into development, so it’s no surprise that we’re counting down to the release of Ride Along 2. To amp up excitement for the action comedy, Universal has dropped the first teaser poster featuring the two leads riffing on their pre-existing character traits.

The first movie starred chucklesome duo Ice Cube and Kevin Hart as a mismatched pair forced to spend an inordinate amount of time together in a police car. Hart’s hyperactive police academy rookie falls for the sister of Cube’s grizzled detective, and to prove himself he joins the veteran on a ride along. While it was undoubtedly a critical flop – the film has an 18% Rotten Tomatoes rating – there’s the possibility that the second outing may garner stronger reviews.
