Ice Cube-Kevin Hart Comedy ‘Ride Along 3’ in Development

13 October 2016 6:44 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Universal is in early development of a third installment of its police comedy franchise “Ride Along 3,” starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart.

Screenwriters Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi are working on the script with director Tim Story. The trio has worked on the first two “Ride Along” movies. Ice Cube, Will Packer, Matt Alvarez and the late Larry Brezner produced the first two movies.

The first “Ride Along” opened in 2014 with Hart as a security guard trying to prove to his girlfriend’s police officer brother, played by Cube, that he is a worthy brother-in-law by going on a police ride-along. The film, set in Atlanta with a $25 million budget, grossed $153 million worldwide.

Ride Along 2,” which opened in January, was set in Miami with Hart’s character having graduated from the police academy and the duo dealing with crime lords. The sequel grossed $124 million worldwide.

Broad Green Brothers Gabriel and Daniel Hammond Reveal Shift to Bigger Films and 'Bad Santa 2' Plans

25 August 2016 6:30 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Gabriel and Daniel Hammond aren't the first interlopers to crash the gates of Hollywood with deep pockets and ambitions. But the Washington, D.C.-reared duo, who sold their hedge fund, SteelPath, to OppenheimerFunds in 2012 for what was said to be several billion dollars, have every intention of sticking around. Since launching Broad Green Pictures (named for the street they grew up on in Potomac, Md.) in 2014, the brothers — whose parents took them to old movies — have assembled a staff of 90 that includes Straight Outta Compton producer Matt Alvarez as production president. The Broad Green Layoffs: Why Good Movies Aren’t Enough to Avoid The Startup Curse

20 July 2016 11:11 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 37, and his brother, Daniel, 33, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures two summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical about its prospects. In a time when even the Weinsteins are struggling to survive, it was a strange time to reinvent a dying economic model.

Now Broad Green is laying off around 6 percent of its staff, all of whom work in the publicity department, the company confirmed to IndieWire. Broad Green’s publicity head Adam Keen, a former Warner Bros. publicity exec, has resigned. Marketing and communications personnel are traditionally the first casualties of cutbacks in Hollywood.

The layoffs were unsurprising. Ken Kwapis’s Sundance comedy “A Walk in the Woods” starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte managed $30 million, but that couldn’t counterbalance films like Ramin Bahrani’s well-reviewed real estate thriller “99 Homes” ($1.7 million domestic) and Sarah Silverman’s depressive drama “I Smile Back” ($58K). Layoffs Hit Broad Green, Adam Keen Resigns as Publicity Chief (Exclusive)

19 July 2016 11:45 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Broad Green Pictures will lay off roughly 6% of its 90-person work force, Variety has learned. The cuts are mostly to junior level staffers and the studio does not expect to make additional reductions.

In addition, Adam Keen has resigned as head of publicity for Broad Green. Keen will stay on for a few weeks to help with the transition. The choice to move on was his, and he is weighing new job opportunities.

Broad Green has struggled to find its identity. The indie label had a hit with Robert Redford’s “A Walk in the Woods,” but failed to generate much box office for the Andrew Garfield drama “99 Homes,” which grossed $1.4 million, and Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups,” which couldn’t crack $1 million. The company is in the process of re-positioning itself, moving away from the arthouse and trying to back more mid-budget, commercially-oriented fare.

Is the Sky Falling for Independents? Film Execs Say Not Yet

4 June 2016 3:52 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A trio of newbie distribution outfits — Bleecker Street, Broad Green Pictures and Saban Films — remain upbeat amid the profound changes percolating through Hollywood.

Execs with each, plus “Sicario” producer Molly Smith, appeared Saturday at the Produced By conference at the Sony lot on the panel alarmingly titled “Is the Sky Falling? The Challenges and Opportunities Facing Independent Film Producers.”

“I don’t think the sky is falling,” said Bleecker Streets’s Andrew Karpen. “There’s clearly a market for over-35 audiences in  theatrical releases.”

Bleecker Street’s successes so far include “Eye in the Sky” with $18 million, “I’ll See You in My Dreams” and “Trumbo” — the latter two with over $7 million each, despite limited theatrical release. Karpen noted that it’s crucial to not overreach with more screens than needed, and to recognize where the audience is going to be.

Alix Madigan Departs Broad Green as Head of Creative Affairs

1 June 2016 3:40 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Alix Madigan is departing fast-growing Broad Green Pictures as head of creative affairs to return to her roots as an independent producer.

The split is amicable and comes as Broad Green ramps up its efforts to aim at the mainstream market with such fare as ensemble dance comedy “Step Sisters,” Bryan Cranston’s drug drama “The Infiltrator” and Billy Bob Thornton’s comedy “Bad Santa 2.”

Broad Green, operated by brothers Daniel and Gabriel Hammond, shifted focus last month by hiring “Straight Outta Compton” producer Matt Alvarez as president of production. Board Green’s biggest box office success so far was “A Walk in the Woods” with $30 million, but arthouse fare such as Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups” have not broken out.

Alvarez has a strong track record with producing credits including “Friday,” “Barbershop” and “Ride Along.”

Broad Green Taps Matt Alvarez as President of Production

5 May 2016 10:20 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Broad Green Pictures has tapped “Straight Outta Compton” producer Matt Alvarez as president of production.

In his new job, Alvarez will be responsible for building the studio’s film slate. His hire is part of a larger move by Broad Green to focus more intently on bigger budgeted, commercial fare.

The studio originally expected to straddle art house and mainstream projects, but the results on the indie side have been mixed. Broad Green scored with the Robert Redford dramedy “A Walk in the Woods,” which went on to make nearly $30 million domestically, but it couldn’t draw crowds to more esoteric fare such as Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups,” which has yet to crack $1 million. It’s been a difficult period for the specialty market, with art house releases fighting to get noticed as major studios invest in bigger and bigger comic book and franchise films.
