[Review] Clown

21 June 2016 10:38 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Inside Out notwithstanding, it’s been awhile since cinema attempted to make clowns scary again, or at least use them as the central focus of a horror piece. Cheap make-up, big shoes, colorful hair, and a frilly suit can’t be all that scary anymore, so why bother? After a three-and-a-half-year shelf life, Clown, the Eli Roth-produced directorial debut of Jon Watts — who went on to put out Cop Car before this film’s release and is currently shooting Spider-Man: Homecoming — has arrived with the full intention of rectifying that void and answering that question.

Following in the footsteps of a Grimm fairy tale, Clown tackles the ‘ancient Nordic myth’ of an evil spirit living inside a clown costume that has one goal: devouring children, one for each month of winter. To do so, someone must first don the costume, wherein they’ll begin to transform into a demonic clown, »

Review: Clown is a Genuinely Disturbing Effort by Jon Watts

17 June 2016 9:14 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

It’s hard to believe that a movie like Clown even got made in the first place; the project started out as a fake trailer several years ago, which caught the attention of Eli Roth (because his name was plastered all over it), who then brought the concept to Vertebra Films in hopes of getting the project off the ground for director Jon Watts.

Now, after all this time, Clown has finally arrived in the Us via Dimension Films, and while it could have used a little more trimming (especially in the film’s second act), by and large, Watts has crafted a genuinely creepy and disturbing body horror experience unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. I had an immensely good time watching Clown, making it well worth the wait.

Clown follows Kent (Andy Powers), a real estate agent doing his best to juggle a demanding career and his responsibilities to his family. »

Clown Review

ClownJon Watts’ long-silenced, Eli-Roth-produced possession flick – is despicably vile. Now, for a horror fan, this might come as a vote of confidence, and typically, you’d be right. I love a good horror movie that f#*ks me up in all the right ways, yet Jon Watts’ transformation-gone-goofy crosses a line that becomes less fun and overly morose. Everything suggests a wacky, wild metamorphosis – from a Peter Stormare bit-part to demon-infested clown suit – but this is grimy, gross-out horror with little meaning beyond kill, kill, and kill some more. It’s fun in spurts, but plays too serious for comfort most of the time – a Coulrophobic’s nightmare buried under weak, underdeveloped scripting.

Andy Powers stars as Watts’ father-turn-demon, a realtor named Kent. The day of his son Jack’s (Christian Distefano) birthday, their party clown cancels at the last minute, which Kent must remedy. As he wanders around an empty listing, »

Interview: Laura Allen Talks Clown (Exclusive)

16 June 2016 4:09 PM, PDT | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Parents are often driven to only act in ways that will positively influence their young and impressionable children. Unfortunately, at times even their best intentions can fail and ultimately do more harm than good. That’s certainly the case with the married main characters in the horror film, ‘Clown,’ as they try to make their son happy on his birthday with a visit by the title iconic figure. But actress Laura Allen’s well-meaning character soon uncovers the frightening consequences of depending on superficial societal expectations to fulfill a sense of happiness, instead of following her own instincts. Dimension Films and Anchor Bay Entertainment are set to distribute ‘Clown’ in select theaters  [ Read More ]

Jon WattsClown is set to hit limited theaters and VOD on June 17th, and to celebrate, we’ve got a few photos and a brand new clip from the terrifying film (I’ve seen it and it’s intense and pretty gnarly). Produced by Eli Roth, Clown refuses to pull a single punch, putting adults and kids in mortal danger, nobody is safe in this one.

Starring Peter Stormare, Laura Allen, Andy Powers and Elizabeth Whitmere, Clown is a story of a loving father who dons a clown outfit and makeup to perform at his son’s sixth birthday, only to later discover that the costume – red nose and wig included– will not come off and his own personality changes in a horrific fashion. To break the curse of the evil outfit, the father must make grim choices with his own family facing danger.

Get Creepy with New Photos from Eli Roth-Produced Clown

7 June 2016 12:58 AM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Jon Watts’ long-awaited killer clown film (aptly titled) Clown is finally getting ready to see the light day (it’s a couple of years old) when it hits select theaters and VOD June 17th via Dimension Films & Anchor Bay Entertainment. Watts has since helmed the very impressive Cop Car and was hired to reboot a certain franchise involving some kid named Peter Parker and his issues with a spider bite…but before those films, he co-wrote and directed what is easily one of the most uncomfortably intense horror films in quite a while, which makes the film’s delay over the last couple of years that much more baffling. We loved this one and are stoked to share a gallery of photos that were sent to us, thanks to the crew over at Dimension Films and Anchor Bay Entertainment. Check out the photos and be sure to watch this one when it’s released, »

Watch: Official Trailer for Creepy 'Clown' Horror Produced by Eli Roth

26 May 2016 4:58 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"Lure people out of the villages into its cave with his white face and red nose..." The Weinstein Company has debuted a trailer for the horror film Clown, which is directed by Jon Watts, the filmmaker now set to direct the next Spider-Man movie. It's actually based on a fake trailer that Watts originally made in 2012 that included fake credits for producer Eli Roth. Roth actually saw the trailer, got involved, and helped them make a feature version and this is the final product. The concept is about a clown suit that a father finds that when he puts it on turns him into an evil child-eating clown, which reminds me a bit of Santa Clause or The Mask (though this is much, much more sinister). The cast includes Andy Powers, Laura Allen, Peter Stormare, Christian Distefano, Chuck Shamata, and Elizabeth Whitmere. See both trailers below. Here's the official release »

Trailer For Eli Roth-Produced Clown Arrives; Hitting Theaters/VOD This June

25 May 2016 4:03 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

The fake trailer for Clown has been around for quite some time, with the made up film revolving around a father putting on a clown suit and the suit and face taking him over. With the added credits of having Eli Roth involved, it was a pretty nifty little trailer for a film that simply did not exist. Fast forward a couple of years later and the director of that fake trailer (Jon Watts) has went on to not only film the actual Clown movie (Starring Peter Stormare, Laura Allen, Andy Powers and Elizabeth Whitmere and guess who’s involved as a producer?…Eli Roth), but has since moved onto helming film such Cop Car and the upcoming Spider-main: Homecoming.

On June 17th, Clown is hitting limited theaters and VOD and judging from the Real trailer for the Real movie, it looks pretty entertaining if I do say so myself. »

Harker’s Hits: Hollywood

There’s no such thing as quiet days in Hollywood. There’s always something happening and today is no exception, so let’s jump right into the fray!

• Oscar-winning legend Warren Beatty’s been keeping a fairly low profile since his wildly expensive Town & Country bombed 15 years ago. But apparently the lothario (long-rumored to be the subject of Carly Simon’s enduring hit “You’re So Vain”) is coming out of semi-retirement as news broke that his pet project based on the life of famed millionaire/movie producer/shut-in Howard Hughes will be released this fall. (He’s been working on this since the ’70s as writer, director, producer, and star.) What’s of more interest to me/us is that he also said he’s working on a sequel to his uber-stylish, three-time Oscar-winning comic-book adaptation Dick Tracy.
