After reaching the dizzying heights of the magical $1 billion mark with 2010's Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton came back down to Earth with a bump last year as both Dark Shadows and Frankenweenie struggled to light up the box office, and the less said about the Burton-produced Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter the better.
However, the filmmaker seems to be wasting little time in picking himself up for his next directorial offering, with Deadline reporting that Burton has signed on helm the long-in-development Big Eyes from Ed Wood screenwriters Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander, whose other credits include The People vs. Larry Flynt, Man on the Moon and the upcoming Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and Monopoly.
Big Eyes tells the story of Walter and Margaret Keane, who enjoyed huge success in the 1950s and 60s selling Margaret's artwork (featuring unusually large-eyed children) under her husband's name, until they divorced and »

Tim Burton is on board to direct his next film, "Big Eyes," which will star Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams as Margaret and Walter Keane, whose paintings of big-eyed children were a mass-market phenomenon in the 1950s and '60s. Burton himself uses a similar big, dark-eyed aesthetic in both his animated films and the makeup design in his live-action films. One real-life movie moment sure to be included in the film is the Keanes' dramatic showdown in divorce court, when the meek Margaret Keane beat Walter in a judge-ordered paint-off, after being challenged to prove who of the two had the artistic talent (Margaret was the gifted artist, while Walter the outspoken marketing genius). The film is co-penned by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (who excel at stranger-than-fiction biopics such as "The People vs. Larry Flynt" and "Man on the Moon," as well as Burton's "Ed Wood"), and per Deadline, »

The formerly Tim Burton-produced Big Eyes now also has Tim Burton as its director, as having a screenplay from Ed Wood’s Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski and a title similar to Big Fish has apparently convinced Burton it’s close enough to a rehash for him to direct. That’s not the only change in personnel: Formerly attached stars Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds have been jettisoned in favor of the more Burton-ly unusual Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz, who will take on the roles of kitsch art icons Margaret and Walter Keane when the film shoots this summer »

Big Eyes: Director Tim Burton and Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz are joining Amy Adams in Big Eyes, based on the true story of Margaret and Walter Keane. The couple became known for paintings featuring children with large, sad eyes, but it wasn’t until they were divorced that Margaret received full credit for her artistry. Burton once commissioned Margaret to paint a portrait of his then-fiancee Lisa Marie and their dog. Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski scripted and had hoped to direct; they previously wrote Ed Wood for Burton. Tim Burton is one of those directors that many love to hate. While I was not in the camp that despised Dark Shadows and Alice In Wonderland, I admit that they feel more like dull rehashes of the same stuff Burton has been doing since the 1990s. So this next piece of news about Burton’s latest project makes me all kinds of happy. Burton will be stepping behind the camera for Big Eyes, from Ed Wood writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. The even better news? Big Eyes will star Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams.
I think I want to point out that neither of those people are named ‘Johnny Depp.’ Waltz and Adams replace Ryan Reynolds and Reese Witherspoon, who were attached to Big Eyes when Burton was only set in a producing role. Now that he has stepped up as director, the film is being produced and distributed by the Weinsteins, »

Finally! It's about time Tim Burton finally took on an intriguing and original project. Big Eyes has been gestating for years now with a script from Ed Wood writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. Most recently, the writing duo was going to take over directing duties themselves with Tim Burton producing and Ryan Reynolds and Reese Witherspoon in the lead roles. However, Deadline reports Burton will now be in the director's chair and Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams will play artists Walter and Margaret Keane, who became famous in the 1960's with their wide-eyed depictions of women and children. The paintings were a huge hit, selling to gas stations and dime stores across the country. It was Walter's marketing skills that got the paintings noticed, and he also took credit for the artistry, bringing him fame on the talk shows across the board. However, it was Margaret who was the real artist. »

Have you ever seen those eerie paintings of children with enormous, sad eyes? They're often collected by people with a taste for kitsch and/or creeping out their guests. Ever wondered about the artist behind them? It's Margaret Keane, and soon you'll know everything you ever wanted to know her and her husband Walter thanks to a new Tim Burton movie in development, appropriately titled “Big Eyes.” Burton is directing a script by screenwriting duo Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander, who worked with Burton on his wonderful “Ed Wood.” Their other projects run the gamut from the Andy Kaufman biopic “Man on the Moon” to “The People vs. Larry Flynt” to ... “Agent Cody Banks.” “Big Eyes” is all about the aftermath of Walter and Margaret's divorce and eventual lawsuit over who was the real painter behind the incredibly successful works. Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams are in talks to star, »

Tim Burton is all set to direct the true life courtroom drama Big Eyes. The film will focus on Walter and Margaret Kane, an artistic couple famously known for painting pictures of big eyed children during the 1950s and 60s. After a bitter divorce in 1965, the two enter a dispute over who actually painted the pictures which eventually led to a paint-off in court. If you’re unfamiliar with the story we wont ruin the outcome here, but of course you can find all the information you need on the Internet.
Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams are currently in negotiations to play the warring couple, which will make a nice change from Burton’s usual casting of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. The script is written by Burton’s Ed Wood collaborators, Larry Karazewski and Scott Alexander, whom originally intended to direct the project themselves with Burton as a producer. »

Deadline reports that Tim Burton will direct Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained) and Amy Adams (The Fighter, The Master) in Big Eyes, a film scripted by Scott Alexander (Ed Wood, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters) and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, 1408). The Weinstein Company is closing a deal to fund and distribute the film.
Deadline describes the plot:
…Margaret and Walter Keane, whose paintings of large eyed children became one of the first mass marketed art sensations in the 50s and 60s. Those prints sold in gas stations and every five and dime store across the country. While Walter was the marketing genius, he also took the bows for doing the brush work. He was a full fledged celebrity, a regular on the TV talk show circuit. His shy wife was the actual artist in the family. When they split and she tried to get her due, he painted her as being eccentric, »

More than a year after casting Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds in what was set to only be a Tim Burton production, Big Eyes has shifted gears. Now Burton will direct, and Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams have taken over the lead roles of Walter and Margaret Keane, a real-life couple whose signature wide-eyed paintings of children became a huge commercial art sensation in the fifties and sixties. "While Walter was the marketing genius, he also took the bows for doing the brush work," Deadline writes. "He was a full fledged celebrity, a regular on the TV talk show circuit. His shy wife was the actual artist in the family." The film will, at some point, feature a courtroom paint-off between Waltz and Adams. Written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, Man on the Moon), Big Eyes is set to begin production this summer. »
