High-Profile Standup Deals Help Netflix Corner Market Once Dominated by HBO

1 March 2017 3:15 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Comedy Central is heavily invested in the Trevor Noah business. In 2015, the cable channel plucked the comic from near obscurity to succeed Jon Stewart as host of “The Daily Show.” Two months after Noah premiered on the late-night talker, his standup special “Lost in Translation” premiered on Comedy Central. Since then, the network has aggressively marketed Noah and stuck by him as “The Daily Show” host, waiting out early, lackluster ratings that have only recently showed signs of growth.

Comedy Central would appear to be a natural home for Noah’s next standup special. But when his newest effort, “Afraid of the Dark,” debuted last week, it did so on Netflix.

Noah’s special is just one item purchased in a Netflix shopping spree that has made the streaming service the dominant buyer in the standup marketplace. Two years ago, top-tier comedians could land $5 million-$10 million for a cable TV special. Now »

How Starz Chief Chris Albrecht Struck Gold With Overlooked Audiences

14 February 2017 1:02 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Chris Albrecht brought TV into a new era with groundbreaking shows like “The Sopranos,” “Sex and the City” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” when he presided over HBO throughout much of 1990s and 2000s. Now, as CEO of premium cable network Starz, he’s less about reinventing the wheel than driving it to forgotten places. At the Code Media conference, Albrecht said Starz has found success — including 1 million subscribers paying $8.99 a month for its standalone streaming service — by going after viewers competitors like HBO may have missed. “Instead of being everything for everyone, we’re targeting specific audiences who are »

Starz to Issue Pre-Paid Cards as Alternative to Traditional Subscriptions

14 February 2017 12:25 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Starz is going to issue pre-paid subscription cards that allow consumers to pay for the premium service without using credit cards, CEO Chris Albrecht revealed Tuesday in a Q&A session at the Recode Media conference in Laguna Niguel, Calif.

While he stopped short of offering details on the new payment option, which are still being worked out according to a Starz rep, Albrecht said the pre-paid cards will be on the market sometime early this year. One variable still being debated is how long a period can be purchased considering a monthly rate could make for subscribers who wouldn’t stick around for long.

“One of the big obstacles in the subscription business is churn, whether TV or magazines,” he said.

Pre-paid cards, which other premium TV or streaming services from HBO to Netflix don’t typically offer in the U.S., is just one way Albrecht says he’s rethinking standard Starz operating procedures as »

Starz Boss on Lionsgate Merger: "This Will Make Us a Talent Magnet"

10 January 2017 3:23 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - TV News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - TV News news »

Expect Starz to be more aggressive pursuing creative talent and exploiting ownership rights after merging with Hollywood's Lionsgate studio.

So said Starz CEO Chris Albrecht on Tuesday as he told investors that joining forces with Lionsgate via a recently concluded $4.4 billion merger will allow his premium cable channel to secure more production scale and creative know-how. John Malone on Whether Lionsgate Can Follow Netflix’s Direct-to-Consumer Model

10 January 2017 11:19 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Cable mogul John Malone has issued a bright outlook for Lionsgate after recently acquiring premium cabler Starz for approximately $4.4 billion.

“The real question for Lionsgate is how far up the food chain is it realistic to think Lionsgate can go,” Malone said on Tuesday during Lionsgate’s inaugural Investor Day. “Can you create a Netflix-like direct-to-consumer relationship branded on a global basis, is that within the scope of possibility? Because that’s a great model if you can get there.”

Malone praised Netflix CEO Reed Hastings before addressing how Lionsgate will deal with streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon, noting that Netflix has recognized the benefit of Lionsgate and Starz being in a package as part of a broader service offering.

“He really broke the mold with his success,” Malone said about Hastings. “He got to scale. The traditional distributors who were asleep at the switch, they should have been doing that, »
