‘Outlander’ Finds Its Lord John Grey in David Berry

29 August 2016 8:44 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Australian actor David Berry has joined the cast of Starz’s “Outlander” for its upcoming third season.

Berry will play Lord John William Grey in the fantasy drama that shifts between the 20th and 19th century. The character is a boyishly handsome upper crust Brit, but a scandal in his past has resigned him to serving as governor of a desolate prison in Scotland. The role gains significance as “Outlander,” based on Diana Gabaldon’s eight-novel series, unfolds.

Sony Pictures TV’s “Outlander” was recently renewed for two more seasons. Season 3 will adapt Gabaldon’s “Voyager,’ while Season 4 will be based on “Drums of Autumn.”

“‘Outlander’ is like nothing seen before on television. From its depiction of a truly powerful female lead character, to the devastating decimation of the Highlander way of life, to what is a rarely seen genuine and timeless love story, it is a show that not only transports the viewer, but »

Here’s Why Starz Isn’t Holding Its Breath for an ‘Outlander’ Emmy

1 August 2016 12:06 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Starz really loves its historical time-travel series “Outlander.” If only the Emmys did.

“‘Outlander’ is going to be around a while,” Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said at the network’s Television Critics Association executive session on Monday. “We couldn’t be more proud of the show.”

It’s not just talk. Starz renewed “Outlander” for two more seasons already and is open to more depending on the creative direction. “We’re committed at least through Book 4,” said Albrecht. “As soon as I get to read Book 5 and 6 we can start to talk about that.”

Despite fan and critical love for the series, however, “Outlander” was snubbed by the Television Academy in the major categories. (It did receive nominations for its music composition, costuming and production design.) Even “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin was outraged about the lack of apparent love for “Outlander” and took a break from writing »

Starz has been catching up on (and sometime surpassing) Showtime in the number of subscribers during the past year. But when it comes to Emmy recognition, the network still lags far behind premium cable rivals HBO and Showtime. Following another disappointing Emmy nominations cycle where all of Starz’s top contenders — Outlander, Power, Survivor’s Remorse and The Girlfriends Experience — were snubbed, CEO Chris Albrecht was asked to address the lack of Emmy love for the… »

Starz Boss Doesn't Think Outlander Will Ever Get Emmys Love

1 August 2016 11:49 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

What will it take for the Emmys to finally pay attention to Outlander? For the second season in a row, the series and its stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan found themselves shut out of the major nominations. And according to Starz CEO Chris Albrecht, that might never change. The premium cable network's boss was addressing reporters at Starz's TCA Summer Press Day when he shared his pessimistic outlook on the fan-favorite show's chances at being invited to the TV Academy's party in the future. But he doesn't see that as an indictment of the quality of the work. Rather, he placed blame at the feet of the Academy itself. "I don't think we'll ever break through with those people on »

Starz Chief on Emmys: ‘It’s Not a Level Playing Field’

1 August 2016 11:26 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Starz’s best-regarded shows — including “Outlander,” “Power” and “Survivor’s Remorse” — were shut out when Emmy nominations were announced last month. The network’s CEO Chris Albrecht had some thoughts about that on Monday.

“I don’t think we’ll ever break through with those people on those shows,” Albrecht said at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “Look, I was part of the team that invented how to campaign for Emmy awards. Trust me, it’s not a level playing field. I spent eight years inside the TV Academy working it. And it took a lot of money, and there’s a certain momentum that goes along with that.”

Albrecht added that he was proud of the work being done on “Outlander,” “Power” and “Survivor’s,” and said that each merits an award. But he does not expect the recognition to come from the Television Academy.

Starz announces strip club drama Pussy Valley

1 August 2016 11:08 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

During the Television Critics Association press tour, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht announced that the premium cable network is heading behind-the-scenes of the world of pole dancing for a strip club drama entitled Pussy Valley from playwright Katori Hall (The Mountaintop).

“Pussy Valley is an intimate window to the unexplored southern strip club world, where the desires of pro-ballers and politicians collide with the dreams of five brave women. For these women, the line between performance and reality becomes blurred, as the drama of their outside lives threaten their onstage personas. On the quest for money, power, and respect, each woman must make a choice. For some it’s a step down, for others a step up, as the Pink Pony stage constantly shape-shifts between a platform for freedom and a gilded cage. In this world of smoke and mirrors, who will fall and who will fly?”

Starz CEO Chris Albrecht fielded a question Monday morning about the title printability of his new stripper series, “Pussy Valley” — particularly within the generally conservative confines of newspapers. (Yes, they still exist.) “It’s a story about cats,” the Starz chief executive deflected at first, before offering a sincere answer for the questioner at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour. “It’s … the right title for the show. I don’t know that we’ll run into trouble, but that remains to be seen.” After all, “Pussy Valley” is the name of the source material, and that’s been printed, »

If Chris Albrecht is frustrated by Starz's lack of Emmy nominations this year, he's not letting it show. When the CEO was asked about his network's absence from the 2016 race during his Monday session at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, he all but shrugged — saying that his current roster of critically favored series probably won't find themselves in a position like The Americans anytime soon. Starz would really appreciate it if you’d all stop suing them, already. On Thursday, a media analyst asked Starz CFO Scott Macdonald if he could better quantify or qualify litigation costs from the company’s fiscal second quarter. CEO Chris Albrecht jumped in before Macdonald even had a chance to open his mouth. “A Lot! A Lot. Dick Wolf is gonna do a new show: ‘Law & Starz,'” he responded emphatically on the afternoon’s Q2 conference call. “How many unfounded lawsuits can one company get hit with?” Albrecht then answered his own question — and the analyst’s: “A Lot. »
