Trevor Hogg chats with Kurtis Wiebe and Tyler Jenkins about transforming a literary icon into a swashbuckling World War II hero…
“My family is very musical, but I’m the only one who’s ever shown interest in creative writing,” explains Kurtis Wiebe (Green Wake) who won a Shuster Award for Outstanding Comic Book Writer in 2012. “But, we grew up with stories very much being part of our lives.” Comic books were not part of reading childhood itinerary. “Not until my mid-twenties when a friend bought me an issue of Walking Dead. I had no idea comics could be anything other than superhero stories, so it was a huge eye opener. I was never into superheroes; it never really caught my attention. The idea that you could tell any story you wanted with the medium was a huge appeal to me.” The desire to take the comic book beyond the »

In this new cinematic age of movie team-ups and giant ensembles like Marvel's The Avengers and DC Comics' Justice League, it makes sense that Hasbro might bring together its two biggest properties for one giant movie experience. Well, don't hold your breath waiting for a Transformers/G.I. Joe movie crossover anytime soon. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura doesn't believe the stars will ever align in order to make this happen.
When asked by MTV about the prospects of Hasbro's toy giants coming together on the big screen, the producer had this to say:
"We haven't spent a moment on it. I know they did it in the comic books, but I think the reality that we're looking at is...It's hard enough to figure out how to do it alone and [then] trying to figure out how to do it together...I don't think that it's as organic as people think. »

Sony has released a new trailer for director Will Gluck’s (Easy A) remake of the classic 1982 music Annie, which sees Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) taking on the lead role alongside Jamie Foxx (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) Cameron Diaz (The Counselor), Rose Byrne (X-Men: First Class), Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire) and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Thor: The Dark World); watch it below…
Academy Award® nominee Quvenzhané Wallis stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) – advised by his brilliant VP, »

Focusing on an orphan adopted by the wealthy Daddy Warbucks (renamed Benjamin Stacks and a New York mayoral candidate in this updated version of the classical musical), it’s a heartwarming tale and boasts an impressive cast of actors which also includes Rose Byrne and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.
This latest trailer features “A Hard Knock Life” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile”, along with a few modern day changes to some now very dated lines!
We also get to see a lot more of some of the cast members who weren’t featured that heavily in the original trailer, and while many continue to doubt the necessity of this remake, it does actually look a lot better than expected! »

Sony Pictures has released new Annie trailer. The film stars Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) in the title role as a young, happy, street-tough foster kid living with the mean Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz) who is taken in by New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) in a thinly veiled campaign move. I want to be excited for this movie, it's got a good cast, and I enjoyed director Will Gluck's Easy A, but the trailers are falling flat for me. The jokes aren't landing, and it seems like it's trying too hard to update the classic musical. But with its holiday release date, I'm holding on to the hope that it will be a crowd-pleaser. Hit the jump to check out the new Annie trailer. The film also stars Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and David Zayas. Annie opens on December 19th. Via Yahoo! »

The second trailer for Annie has arrived, and it delves deeper into the life of eccentric billionaire Will Stacks. Hoping to become mayor of New York without a wife, an almost impossible task, he saves a young orphan girl from certain death. This pushes him directly into the spotlight, so he continues his relationship with the girl, named Annie, pulling her away from her hardknock life and giving her a real home. Is this the kick his political career needs? Watch the latest footage from this reimagining of the Broadway musical starring Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz and Rose Byrne.

Whether you have a good time with Pompeii depends entirely on what you demand from it. This historical disaster epic is loaded with CGI destructo-porn and thrilling action sequences, but falls almost unbelievably short in the heart department. For many audience members, that will be perfectly acceptable.
Anderson wasn’t aiming to make a profound, historically accurate meditation on the titular Roman city. Rather, his intentions for Pompeii should be obvious from the poster alone, which depicts gladiator Milo (Kit Harington) romancing noblewoman Cassia (Emily Browning) as Mount Vesuvius lays waste to everything around them. The idea of a film combining Titanic‘s doomed romance and Gladiator‘s furious action is what sold this film to the studios and then to audiences back in February. Still, what a shame, then, that Pompeii can’t even begin to hold a candle to either of those inspirations.
That’s not to say that it’s all bad. »

In the wake of its success with The Blacklist this season, NBC has given series orders to a trio of intrigue-heavy political-tinged dramas that bring Katherine Heigl, Anna Friel, and Hope Davis into prime-time.
First up is Allegiance, a show that will remind some of FX’s The Americans, except it’s set in present day. The show stars Scott Cohen (Necessary Roughness) and Davis (The Newsroom) as deactivated covert Russian spies living in America (full descriptions below).
Then there is State of Affairs, which returns former Grey’s Anatomy star Heigl to series TV. This one is about a »

Not content to let Fox hog the pre-upfronts series order merry-go-round, NBC started its 2013-2014 series pickups on Tuesday (May 6) afternoon. Thus far, NBC has given series orders to the comedy "Marry Me" and the dramas "Odyssey," "Allegiance" and "State of Affairs," starring Katherine Heigl. "Marry Me" comes from "Happy Endings" veteran David Caspe and was directed by Seth Gordon ("The Goldbergs"). It comes from Sony Pictures Television. Casey Wilson and Ken Marino topline "Marry Me" as a couple who have been together for six years. After a botched attempt at a wedding proposal, they decide to hold off until they can get it right. Hilarity may ensue. "Marry Me" also stars Sarah Wright, John Gemberling, Tymberlee Hill and Tim Meadows. "Allegiance" was created and directed by George Nolfi ("The Adjustment Bureau"), who will executive produce along with Avi Nir (“Homeland”), Ron Leshem, Amit Cohen, Yona Wisenthal and Giyora Yahalom. »

Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.
A race against time and the elements as a gladiator attempts to save his true love from certain death as a volcano erupts, threatening to engulf the city beneath it.
And here it is, ladies and gentlemen, a considered and factually accurate reconstruction of the events surrounding the fateful eruption of a bloody big hill in Italy. Wait, hang on a minute…who is directing this again? Paul W.S. Anderson, you say? Hmm, on second thoughts, can I have my money back..?
Yes indeed, the man responsible for such cinematic masterpieces as Alien Vs Predator and all of the Resident Evil movies (the games had more atmosphere) is here to completely muck about with history for the sake of entertainment. Event Horizon is not a »

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje has said he hopes to have "a long relationship" with Marvel.
"I'm actually a fan of the Marvel kingdom, I grew up with it. Just to be a part of it is great for me," he said.
"Whatever else comes - I got to play two characters in one movie - now if something else comes up it's great as well. It's the beginning of, hopefully, a very long relationship so we'll see what happens."
Akinnuoye-Agbaje has consistently been tipped to play Black Panther (aka T'Challa), who was the first black superhero in mainstream comics when he debuted in Fantastic Four #52 in 1966.
Akinnuoye-Agbaje can be seen in 3D blockbuster Pompeii, which is showing in UK cinemas from today. »
Director: Paul Ws Anderson; Screenwriters: Janet Scott Batchler, Lee Batchler, Michael Robert Johnson; Starring: Kit Harington, Carrie-Anne Moss, Emily Browning, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jared Harris, Kiefer Sutherland; Running time: 104 mins; Certificate: 12A
With Pompeii, director Paul Ws Anderson has essentially served up cheese on toast. Kiefer Sutherland oozes like fondue in his role as Roman general Corvus, who threatens to spoil the burgeoning romance between Milo, a sweaty young slave (Games of Thrones's Kit Harington), and the dewy-eyed daughter of Pompeii's ruling clan Cassia (Emily Browning). Is that the rumble of sexual hunger we can hear?
Er, no. It's a massive great mountain about to blow. And with this being a kind of sword 'n' sandals pantomime, you may be tempted to call out: 'It's behind you...'
But before the real action starts, Anderson (Resident Evil) exploits every opportunity to get Harington half-naked and rolling around the local sandpit »
