[Fry's Twitter via Empire]

An adaptation of Oscar Wilde‘s classic short story, the film will feature Fry as Sir Simon de Canterville, a 300-year-old ghost, and Laurie as a lowly gardener who is actually Death in disguise. For those unfamiliar with it, Canterville Ghost is the story of Canterville who, for hundreds of years has been haunting Canterville Chase. James Cameron only wants to make more Avatar (and documentaries)

7 May 2012 2:57 PM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

Acclaimed, Oscar-winning, box office record breaking director James Cameron recently summed up the planned rest of his career as follows:

“So I’m not interested in developing anything. I’m in the Avatar business. Period. That’s it. I’m making Avatar 2, Avatar 3, maybe Avatar 4, and I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them.”

So, apart from the news that there may (eventually) be a fourth Avatar film, this presumably means that James Cameron won’t be making Battle Angel, or working with his Dark Angel star Jessica Alba again (unless he casts her in one of the Avatar sequels), or making another TV series (unless it’s an Avatar one, which at this stage would seem prohibitively expensive). It would also rule out Cameron's involvement in any follow-ups to his previous movies, such as a True Lies sequel, another Terminator film, or anything in the Alien/Prometheus franchise. »

Who Should Direct 'Catching Fire'? 5 Directors We Think Could Do The Job

11 April 2012 6:59 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

So, writer-director Gary Ross, having helped make "The Hunger Games" into a gigantic hit, has decided to move on to new pastures. As we reported last week, Ross will be focusing on a new project, and after a few days, Lionsgate officially confirmed (admitted) he will not be helming "Catching Fire," with both the studio and the director issuing formal statements.

Which leaves Lionsgate needing to find someone to replace him, and find someone soon. They have a script from "Slumdog Millionaire" writer Simon Beaufoy, a release date of November 22, 2013, and a scheduling window they need to hit before Jennifer Lawrence has to move on to shooting the "X-Men: First Class" sequel. With all that in mind, we've picked out five names who we think would be good candidates to fill the hole left by Ross on "Catching Fire." Bear in mind, given the studio won't likely be spending big cash on a new helmer, »

As Helmer Gary Ross Plays Hardball With Salary, Could 'Hunger Games' Sequel 'Catching Fire' End Up With A New Director?

4 April 2012 10:11 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

"The Hunger Games" is that rarest of things in the movie industry: an unqualified smash hit. In a world where tentpoles cost upwards of $200 million, Lionsgate's adaptation of Suzanne Collins' popular young-adult novel cost far less, but is doing the same kind of numbers: after the third-biggest opening weekend of all time, it's now taken more than $250 million in the U.S. alone, and half as much again abroad, making everyone involved very, very happy. But as franchises from Marvel to "Twilight" have displayed, once the studio starts making money, everyone else wants in on the action, and that starts to mess around with the business model.

Lionsgate knew they had a hit on their hands even before "The Hunger Games" hit theaters: they'd already commissioned a script for follow-up "Catching Fire" from Oscar-winning "Slumdog Millionaire" writer Simon Beaufoy and set the film for a November 2013 release date. But »

Release Dates Set for ‘End of Watch,’ ‘Identity Theft,’ ‘Welcome to People,’ ‘Cirque du Soleil,’ and More

2 March 2012 7:44 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

There’s a whole lot of release dates for a wide range of films, so let’s get right down to it. First up, we’re hearing from Variety that David Ayer‘s End of Watch — which was picked up by Open Road last week — will go into a wide release on the surprisingly packed day of September 28th. On that date alone, we can also expect Eastwood‘s Trouble With the Curve, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis‘ Won’t Back Down, Adam Sandler‘s animated Hotel Transylvania, and Rian Johnson‘s Looper.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, Anna Kendrick, and America Ferrera are all starring in the cop drama, a project described as something of a mix between found footage and a traditional narrative. (Variety says that we can expect “footage from handheld cameras of police officers, gang members, surveillance cameras and citizens.”) I’m definitely curious to see how »

Guillermo Del Toro To Produce Animated ‘Day Of The Dead’

22 February 2012 2:25 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

As if the guy didn’t already have enough on his plate, we can now add one more movie to our favourite Mexican auteur’s ever growing pile. Director of the modern fantasy classic Pans Labyrinth and the Hellboy Series: Guillermo Del Toro has recently signed on to produce an upcoming CG-animated feature ‘Day Of The Dead’.

At first glance the title may be a bit confusing but let me clarify something: This is not a remake of George Romero’s Day Of The Dead and contains no connection to his zombie franchise or zombies at all it seems;

The story is “an action-packed, fully CG-animated picture, with a “Romeo and Juliet” style love story set against a Mexican “Day of the Dead” backdrop”.

Setup at Reel FX, the project will be directed by Emmy Award Winner Jorge R. Gutierrez best known for Nickelodeons El Tigre, The Adventures of Manny Rivera. »

James Cameron's 3D circus act rolls on with Cirque du Soleil

12 January 2012 4:30 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Cirque du Soleil Worlds Away is the Titanic director's latest 3D fling. But do we really want to see – through 3D glasses – blokes in leotards twirling around on bits of ribbon?

It's probably fair to say that the 3D revolution hasn't panned out exactly as James Cameron envisioned. Avatar was released over two years ago, so by now you would have thought that cinema would be awash with similarly high-reaching 3D epics. But no. Instead we've got a tidal wave of ropey conversion jobs, an increasingly suspicious public and the very real threat that 3D will have caved in on itself by the time Avatar 2 gets released.

This could be the reason for James Cameron's recent decision to dementedly prop up all of 3D by himself. Last year he executive produced Sanctum, a kind of 3D subaquatic spelunking drama that was notable only for Cameron's involvement – something the »

‘Journey 2’ Director Brad Peyton Plans ‘Invasion’ For ‘Cloverfield’-Esque Sci-Fi Soldier Film

10 January 2012 12:33 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

With his latest film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island 3D hitting theaters in mid February, director Brad Peyton isn’t wasting any time setting up his latest project. According to Variety, the relatively new-to-Hollywood director has just sold the pitch Invasion to Cary Granat‘s Reel FX banner.

Peyton is set to produce the project, as well as direct the script written by J. Daniel Shaffer — his only other writing credits include Breyton Ave, which actually made 2011′s Black List (here’s a link to the entire list). Andrew Adamson will produce under his Strange Weather Films title.

Shaffer‘s script “revolves around a group of unarmed, unprepared students from Philadelphia who discover they’ll have to become soldiers to survive an attack from a supernatural force.” If you’re getting déjà vu back to 2008 and a certain Matt Reeves directed horror/sci-fi/mystery film, that’s because Invasion has »
