Dennis Rodman’s North Korea Diplomacy Will Somehow Become a Feature Film

24 February 2014 6:07 PM, PST | | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Years from now, our children and grandchildren will want to know about the early 21st century. Of its great moments. Nay, its greatest moment. They’ll gather in a circle, and ask, “Pop-pop? Will you tell us of Dennis Rodman‘s journeys to North Korea?” And we will show them Diplomats. One of real life’s great untapped comedy premises has finally been tapped. As per The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox has bought the rights to Diplomats, a comedy pitch based off Earth’s premiere former pro baller/ruthless dictator bromance. Fox has tasked Ride Along director Tim Story with the project, with Jonathan Abrams on script duties and The Heat producer Peter Chernin producing. THR describes the film as a two-hander (that is, a film focusing around two co-leads), so it makes perfect sense that Fox would pass this to the guy who just made $100M off a buddy comedy. Plus »

The planned film is called Dictators and is based on a script pitch by Jonathan Abrams.

Rodman has traveled to North Korea a number of times and has striked up quite a relationship with Kim Jong Un, and even sang Happy Birthday to him earlier this year.

Ride Along Director Tim Story to Helm Diplomats Based on the Relationship between Dennis Rodman and Kim Jong Un

23 February 2014 8:42 PM, PST | | See recent news »

Last February, former NBA player/Simon Sez star Dennis Rodman made headlines by becoming pals with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.   I’m surprised it took so long for this dynamic to become the basis for a movie, but THR is reporting that Tim Story (Ride Along) will direct Diplomats.  20th Century Fox bought the pitch, Peter Chernin will produce, and Jonathan Abrams will write the script.  Story is currently finishing up on Think Like a Man Too, and he’s also attached to direct a sequel to Ride Along. I assume there’s no rush on Diplomats since it’s not like the relationship between Rodman and Kim is going to become less insane.  Rodman has already sung “Happy Birthday” to a man whose country is a nightmare.  If there is a rush, it will be to beat another comedy involving the North Korean dictator, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s The Interview. »

What do a heartless North Korean dictator and a troubled former NBA star have it common? Probably something really, really sad, but 20th Century Fox is prepared to mine whatever it is for comedy gold with Diplomats, a comedy pitch based on Rodman's newfound friendship with Kim Jong-un. Ride Along director Tim Story is set to direct, Jonathan Abrams is set to write, and both Rodman and Kim are set to be pretty peeved at how they come off in the movie. »

As Mr. Spock once put it, only Nixon could go to China. But it took erstwhile basketball stalwart and one-time wannabe movie star Dennis Rodman to go to North Korea, and his weird overtures to despot Kim Jong-un are now the subject of a planned comedy at Fox called Diplomats. And Ride Along director Tim Story is the man the studio wants to make it happen.Story, of course, is riding high at the moment thanks to the smash success of the Ice Cube/Kevin Hart mismatched buddy cop comedy. He’s in the middle of juggling the final work on Think Like A Man Too before he segues into the planned Ride Along sequel.Fox has Jonathan Abrams writing Diplomats as a two-hander comedy based on Rodman’s visits to North Korea last year and this past January, where he organized a basketball game, schmoozed with the leader and »
