AMC developing TV adaptation of Black Lives Matter book They Can’t Kill Us All

Deadline is reporting that AMC has acquired the rights to Wesley Lowery’s bestselling book They Can’t Kill Us All: Ferguson, Baltimore, and a New Era in America’s Racial Justice, tapping writer Latoya Morgan (Into the Badlands) to develop a TV drama adaptation.

They Can’t Kill Us All “examines how decades of racially biased policing in segregated neighborhoods with failing schools, crumbling infrastructure and too few jobs has led to the high-profile cases of police brutality in Ferguson, Cleveland, Baltimore and elsewhere and the birth of Black Lives Matter movement seeking justice for the deaths of Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and Freddie Gray.”

According to the site, the potential series will reflect current events and race relations in the U.S. through the stories of a series of fictional characters. In addition to writing, Morgan will also serve as executive producer alongside Brad Weston, Pam Abdy and Scott Nemes of Makeready. »

Veteran executive lines up four initial projects at multi-platofrm content creator.

Brad Weston, who most recently served as president of production for New Regency, has launched global content creation company Makeready backed by eOne.

The venture will develop and produce original features and high-end television for premium cable, Ott and emerging platforms on a worldwide basis.

The plan is to release two features a year starting in 2018, with Universal handling worldwide theatrical marketing and distribution, while eOne will directly distribute in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

eOne will also handle international distribution on all television content. JPMorgan Chase will lead the production facility for the new enterprise, which is fully funded for the development and financing of premium content.

Brad Weston Launches Production Company With Backing From Universal, eOne

Hollywood veteran Brad Weston is launching the movie and television production company Makeready, with backing from Universal Pictures and Entertainment One.

The new venture plans to release two films annually, beginning next year through Universal, which is committed to handling worldwide theatrical marketing and distribution for the company’s feature films, with eOne handling theatrical distribution across Canada, the U.K., Australia/New Zealand, Benelux, and Spain.

EOne, the lead investor in Makeready, will also handle international distribution of all TV content. JPMorgan Chase will lead the production facility for the new enterprise.

Weston most recently served for five years as president and chief executive officer of New Regency, which he departed a year ago.
