Square Enix and developer United Front Games promise guns and punches in the trailer from their spiritual successor to True Crime.
United Front's open world action game is taking all of the hallmarks from Hong Kong action films (at least the John Woo/Tsui Hark heyday of the 90's) and their latest trailer hopes to show that off. The combat video reveals the flurry of punches and kicks your character will be able to deploy, along with the game's disarming mechanic (opponent have a knife--now it's yours). You'll also be able to grab objects in the environment and fling them at your foes, if that's your thing (that's my thing).
Sleeping Dogs comes to the PS3 and Xbox 360 on August 14th.

This week Chinese film giant Bona Film Group announced that it plans to shoot two new films in 3D this year. Tsui Hark will direct a remake of the 1960 film Tracks In The Snowy Forest, while Jacob Cheung is on board to helm White Hair Witch, a retelling of The Bride With White Hair. This news comes after the phenomenal success of Bona's previous foray into the technology, Tsui Hark's Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, which not only amassed over Us$100 million at the Chinese box office, but also displayed Tsui's keen understanding of how to get the most from the added depth of field.Like many, my views on 3D are that it is basically an unnecessary gimmick we can all do without. Jet Li's reunion piece with director Tsui Hark is coming to a big screen near you. A really, really big screen.Indomina Releasing have struck a deal with IMAX to present Tsui Hark's Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate on Us IMAX screens as part of their theatrical release. The down side is Us audiences have to wait until September for the screen space to open up - blame Batman for that, if you must - but the upside is local audiences get the full experience of China's fourth highest grossing film of all time. »

If you’re a fan of old school martial arts with new school 3D technology, then Tsui Hark’s “The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” is the movie you’ve been looking for all your life. A major hit in its native Hong Kong/China, “Flying Swords” stars Jet Li and Xun Zhou, and is a pretty rockin’ good time for those willing to ignore the wonky 3D effects (if you’re not watching it in 3D, that is) and some truly absurd narrative plotting. But hey, that’s why it’s old school — the movie belongs in the ’80s, which, I suspect, was the intention of writer/director Hark. Thanks to the folks at Indomina Releasing, “Flying Swords” is now getting an exclusive, limited engagement across North America in September on IMAX 3D screens. This would make “Flying Swords” the first Chinese-language film to get an IMAX release in the States, »

Hong Kong – Director Ann Hui’s A Simple Life and Tsui Hark’s The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate split the 31st Hong Kong Film Awards with five nods each. Hui’s drama made a clean sweep in the major categories, winning best film, director for Hui, screenplay, actress for Deanie Ip and actor for Andy Lau; while Tsui’s innovation in his 3D martial arts extravaganza paid off in the technical categories. This marked Hui’s fourth best director win at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Her 1995 film, Summer Snow, was the only other film in the awards’ history to have won

Tsui Hark proved he was back on form with ‘Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame’ and with his latest martial arts film - Starring Jet-Li - Flying Swords of Dragon Gate keeps that momentum going, in 3D! Revisiting the film ‘Dragon Inn’ he produced two decades earlier (itself a remake of the 1967 King Hu wuxia classic), Flying Swords has a revamped story, massively upscale production values and its out now to buy on English subbed DVD and Blu. Synopsis: During the Ming Dynasty, China was practically ruled by evil eunuchs. In a mission to rescue persecuted officials, righteous swordsman Zhao Huai'an (Jet Li) assassinates the vicious East Chamber commander Wan Yulou (Gordon Liu), thus making himself the prime target of the West Chamber overlord Yu Huatian (Aloys Chen). Zhao and company flee to the vast, sprawling desert on the frontier, and seek refuge at the infamous Dragon Gate Inn, »

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a good old-fashioned Chinese martial arts movie, and I guess it’s appropriate Tsui Hark’s “The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” would be the movie to welcome me back into the fold. It’s every bit the type of throwback flick that Hark is known for, with its complicated narrative (mind you, I’m not saying the film is especially difficult to understand, it’s just unnecessarily jumbled) and old school martial arts. Once upon a time everything in “Dragon Gate” would be done with wires, but in this day and age of computers, the film’s high-flying stunts are achieved with CGI, or a combination of CGI and wires. An improvement? Not really. In fact, it looks overly fake, but it’s the new reality, so mind as well get used to it. This is officially the third go-round »

With the release of The Raid: Redemption, I’ve asked Sound On Sight contributors Edgar Chaput and Michael Ryan to help me put together a list of 15 classic martial arts films that we consider essential viewing. Here are my five choices.
11- The Blade (Doa)
Directed by Hark Tsui
Inspired by the 1967 Shaw Brothers epic The One-Armed Swordsman, Tsui Hark’s The Blade reinforces that the director is a true innovator, a visionary, a remarkable stylist and a man who knows how to direct action. In a style often compared to Wong Kar Wai’s Ashes of Time, The Blade is a constant, steady blend of hand-held camera work, quick cuts, visual motifs, symbolic imagery and downright poetic juxtapositions. The fight scenes start out violent and blood-stained but gradually progress into grand artistic spectacles – some of the best you’ll ever see.
