Now the time has come for Bollywood to explore Hamlet through Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider, set for release on the 2nd of October 2014. The tragic prince is played by Shahid Kapoor, one of Bollywood’s most versatile actor’s. Shahid Kapoor received critical acclaim for his performance in Kaminey, also directed by Bhardwaj. Vishal Bhardwaj’s attraction for Shakespeare is undeniable. Earlier, he made Maqbool, which was an adaptation of Macbeth, and then Omkara, which was his version of Othello.

Now, he has adapted Hamlet into his upcoming film Haider, which is famous for being Shakespeare’s toughest play, but that did not discourage Vishal Bhardwaj from adapting it, in which Shahid Kapoor has many diverse looks, from his long hair to going totally bald.

When asked Vishal Bhardwaj about it, he said, “Shahid goes through an emotional journey in the film, where he starts from being a simple student in search of his father, grows his hair long and learns that his father has been probably killed and then almost becomes mad to finally taking his revenge. When he came to know that I was adapting Hamlet, he was keen to play the character of Hamlet, who is Haider in our film »

What Shahid Kapoor did for Haider

5 August 2014 6:02 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Shahid Kapoor, who loves his hair and is also known for his different hairstyles, knew that going bald for his look in Haider would cost him greatly. But still he agreed to go bald because it was necessary for the script.

Vishal Bhardwaj also asked him to grow a beard for the film. Again, Shahid agreed. However, after saying a yes to all the challenges of going bald and sporting a beard, for three months he had to sit at home.

The reasons behind that were initially, the look for Haider had to be kept under wraps till Vishal Bhardwaj felt it would be right for him to go public with it. And secondly, Shahid had to wait for his hair to grow back so that he could start working on his next movie. Going bald did come with its fair share of challenges for Shahid Kapoor.
