Box Office – Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Baahubali crush new releases

31 July 2015 8:03 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Bajrangi Bhaijaan continued to gallop in the second week as well with terrific numbers coming in day after day. There was hardly any ‘drop’ per se even after the second weekend and though Wednesday and Thursday were in 6-7 crore range, this was still huge enough as not many films this year have registered this number even on the opening day.

As a result, the film now stands at 273 crore mark and it is just a matter of two more days before Dhoom 3 lifetime record of 284 crore would be history. The game has become bigger for the Salman Khan starrer and while 300 crore is a given now, it has to be seen how much further does it go from here. That said, the lifetime record of Pk [338 crore], looks quite difficult now. Still, Salman, Kabir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Eros would now be a part of 300 Crore Club, which is a huge deal indeed. »

Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Baahubali clash in India's heavyweight box office battle

29 July 2015 2:55 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

In this week’s round-up of the global box-office scene:

• Monster Hunt becomes the most successful Chinese film ever

• Latin American love for Adam Sandler could rescue Pixels

Inside Out on track for a stellar global performance

First of all, let’s catch up with the Indian big boys not mentioned on Rentrak’s chart. After a leaden first six months at the box office there, July has thrown up a titanic tussle between two megastars: moustachioed Telugu supremo Prahbas, and his war epic Baahubali, and Muslim main man Salman Khan, and his cross-border drama Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Baahubali, the country’s much-trumpeted most expensive production to date, at $40m, was looking unbeatable after its record-breaking debut weekend on 10-12 July; its global take was 450 crore ($70.1m) after 17 days on release at the close of this weekend, according to the International Business Times. Which puts it in third place on the »

Amitabh Bachchan responds to Anushka Sharmas twitter threat

27 July 2015 10:51 AM, PDT | BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news »

With superstar Salman Khan's controversial tweets on Sunday receiving flak from the public, now it is actress Anushka Sharma's tweet about threatening to block people who spread negative messages on Twitter that has received a lot of attention. In what seems like a completely random move, Anushka Sharma posted on Twitter, "Trying to keep my Twitter positive (well as positive as possible) so will Block people who rant nonsense with no sense of responsibility." It comes as a surprise to see the actress reacting so strongly about 'senseless' people on the micro blogging without a concrete reason. However, responding to her tweet was megastar Amitabh Bachchan who decided to add a tinge of humour to it, saying, "@AnushkaSharma +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ .... don't you dare Block me after all these 'positives' .. haha .. love." Taking the comment in her stride, Anushka Sharma too replied, "@SrBachchan hahahahaaha noooo way !! Not in a lifetime Sir »

Box Office – Bajrangi Bhaijaan crosses lifetime collections of Kick

27 July 2015 3:36 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

As was expected, none of the two new releases managed to do well commercially. Masaan, an offbeat film, saw some patronage coming from the B-Town insiders but that wasn’t enough to bring ‘aam junta’ from outside in theaters. The film saw a controlled release for itself and though it did receive good critical acclaim, commercially it didn’t have much going for it. As a result, the first weekend was just around the 1 crore mark.

Aisa Yeah Jahaan was another film to arrive and it couldn’t even see a decent all-India release. As a matter of fact, it wasn’t even reviewed by many critics. The film came without any promotion and has disappeared without a trace too. Disaster.

Meanwhile, it was Bajrangi Bhaijaan that continued to bring on moolah, what with around 55 crore coming in over the second weekend. This is huge indeed for the Salman Khan »

Hang Tiger Menon not his brother Yakub tweets Salman Khan

26 July 2015 7:12 AM, PDT | BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news »

Salman Khan, who has been in news with the success of his latest film Bajrangi Bhaijaan, stirred up a controversy late last night as he tweeted out in support of 1993 Mumbai blast accused Yakub Menon. For those unaware on the issue, the court has given capital punishment to Yakub Menon for his role in the Mumbai blasts, which killed 257 people and injured more than 1400. Yakub has been behind bars since 1994 and after the Supreme Court dismissed his curative petition, Yakub Memon submitted a mercy petition to the Maharashtra governor. He also approached the Supreme Court afresh for staying his execution. If his pleas are dismissed, he will be hanged on July 30. Salman Khan however blamed Yakub's brother Tiger Menon, who is one of the key conspirators of Mumbai blasts, and said that it should be Tiger whom the government should hang instead of Yakub. "Get tiger hang him. Parade him not his brother. »

Bin Roye review: childproofed love triangle is soppy vortex suggesting Urdu cinema may still have some way to go

26 July 2015 1:07 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Touted as Pakistan’s most ambitious feature yet, this dull and daft romance can’t even copy clichés competently

Related: Bajrangi Bhaijaan review: Salman Khan strong even when wet as he escorts mute six-year-old back to Pakistan

Last week’s Hindi-language Eid release Bajrangi Bhaijaan posited that India and Pakistan have more that unites than separates them. Its Urdu equivalent Bin Roye, touted as Pakistan’s most ambitious feature yet, suggests that Bollywood and Lollywood – the industry based in Lahore – remain some distance apart. The former film had star power, expansive scope and an undeniable melodramatic potency; the latter unfolds on overlit soap sets on which thirtysomething performers make like goo-goo-eyed kids. Perhaps it’s telling the source is a widely-read romance; still, on this evidence of this terminally sappy drama, the book must have made Nicholas Sparks read like James Ellroy.

Salman Khan to play 40-year old boxer in Sultan to put on 15 kgs of muscle

25 July 2015 6:27 AM, PDT | BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news »

We've all been hearing about Salman Khan's purported project, a film called Sultan to be directed for Yash Raj Films by Ali Abbas Zafar. He will be beefing up his muscles for the part. A close friend of the superstar however reveals, "Salman was not sure he wanted to do Sultan. It's the role of a 40-year old boxer. It'd require a huge amount of preparation. Salman Khan would have to change his entire physique and body language. It'd entail many months of a strict exercise regime and a new diet control so he can acquire a boxer's body. With his heavy commitments, plus his pending court cases, Salman was not sure he can give Sultan the time attention and single-minded focus it requires." But now that Salman Khan has accepted the part, he is going all out to get into character. Interestingly, Akshay Kumar plays a boxer in »

24 July 2015 11:52 AM, PDT | BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news »

Though Salman Khan walked away with a lot of praises for his portrayal as Pawan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, it was Nawazuddin Siddiqui who too received applause for his role as a Pakistani journalist. However, many who watched the film felt that Nawaz's character was inspired from Pakistani journalist named Chand Nawab.

Now, Chand Nawab has revealed his desire to get a compensation for being an inspiration to the role in the film. Also, Chand clarified that he wouldn't opt for any legal or serious action against the actor and the other makers of the film if they refuse any such compensation. He, also, thanked Salman Khan and Kabir Khan for using him as an inspiration since the film has given him a lot of fame. He added that his character has become so popular that he has been receiving offers to star in Pakistani commercials.

Why Riteish Deshmukh and Pulkit Samrat's Bangistan is being postponed abruptly?

24 July 2015 6:08 AM, PDT | GlamSham | See recent GlamSham news »

The Riteish Deshmukh and Pulkit Samrat starrer Bangistan is in the news for reasons more than one. Besides Bangistan being banned in Pakistan, it has also hit the headlines for getting postponed abruptly. Yes the Karan Anshuman directed film has been pushed ahead. The film that was scheduled to release on July 31st, 2015 will now hit the screens on 7th August. Riteish Deshmukh took to a micro-blogging site and confirmed, "Bangistan Now Releases On 7th August."

And we believe there are quite some reasons which must have induced the makers to take such an impromptu decision. Firstly, the trade is abuzz with the news that S. S. Rajamouli's blockbuster Baahubali and Salman Khan starrer super hit film Bajrangi Bhaijaan are still rocking at Bo. The two films have created unprecedented numbers and the audience still can't get over it.

Further, Bangistan was earlier pitted against Ajay Devgn-Tabu starrer Drishyam, »

Salman Khan: Athiya should only work with the younger generation and never come up to our generation

24 July 2015 12:16 AM, PDT | GlamSham | See recent GlamSham news »

For Salman Khan, Hero is a special film. He may be the producer of the film but he is also close to the two debutants Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty and as an uncle, he had something to say to them at the trailer launch of the film.

Salman said, "I think the rightest thing to do is to see to it that these two (Soorja and Athiya) get the right platform. I mean I hope it is. That we will get to know only after the film releases whether it is right or wrong. I don't know what the fate of the film is but I think both of them are stars. Sooraj would come straight into my slot and say 'chalo uncle thoda aage chalo'. My duty is not to aage chalo, but for him to push me as long as possible. He has got to lessen the »

What's common between Varun Dhawan, Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez?

23 July 2015 6:11 AM, PDT | GlamSham | See recent GlamSham news »

Jacqueline Fernandez's chemistry with Salman Khan in Kick was so real that it was believed that the two were more than 'good friends'.

The actress is now working with Varun Dhawan (who replaced Salman in Shuddhi) for Dishoom. And recently Jackie was spotted petting a monkey.

Now, interestingly, both her co-stars Varun Dhawan and Salman Khan are known to have a fondness for monkey.

For those who saw Salman's recently released Bajrangi Bhaijaan, would know that Salman worshipped monkeys (because they are believed to be a form of Bajrangi, and Salman was a Bajrang bali bhakt). Varun, on the other hand, was seen playing with a monkey (the video of which he posted on a social networking site) on the sets of his previous movie Abcd 2.

Well, seems like clicking photos with 'monkeys' is going to be the new trend in Bollywood! »

Salman Khan didn't know whether Biwi Ho Toh Aisi should do well or flop!

We all know that Salman Khan has launched Hero actors Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty. Being their debut film, at the trailer launch of Hero, both the newcomers had got a little emotional and producer Salman got into nostalgia mode and shared his thought that he had when his first film was going to release.

When Salman was asked if he could recollect the feeling he had when his first film was about the release, he said, "That was a very confusing moment for me because I didn't know whether the film should do well or flop, that was Biwi Ho Toh Aisi. I said jitney log mujhe iss picture mein dekhenge, utna mamla gadbad ho jayega. (The more people watch me, it will be more problematic). So I prayed but god didn't listen to me. The film did 100 days at that point of time. Then I realized, God didn't listen to me now, »

Bangistan release stalled in Pakistan

23 July 2015 4:39 AM, PDT | BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news »

In the past few weeks, there was plenty of back and forth decision on whether the Salman Khan film Bajrangi Bhaijaan would release in Pakistan. However, while Bajrangi Bhaijaan did release across the border and has been doing brisk business, we hear that the soon to release Riteish Deshmukh - Pulkit Samrat starrer Bangistan is stuck in a similar quagmire. In fact we hear that the film produced by Riteish Sidhwani has been banned from releasing in Pakistan owing to its theme. However, Sidhwani, who was taken by surprise with this ruling, has decided on fighting the ban stating that he along with the director of the film Karan Anshuman and the lead actors have applied for Pakistani visa, to screen the film for the authorities. Apparently, the authorities in Pakistan based their decision to ban the film on the trailer stating that Bangistan is anti-Pakistan and anti-Muslim. As for the film, »
