‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Review: Matt Reeves Concludes the Best Sci-Fi Trilogy Since the First ‘Star Wars’

26 June 2017 6:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Rebooted franchises reek of cheap Hollywood cash grabs, but in light of those expectations, the refurbished “Planet of the Apes” franchise pulls off a minor miracle. With “War for the Planet of the Apes,” technological wizardry and first-rate storytelling combine into a bracing action-adventure that concludes the best science fiction trilogy since the original trio of “Star Wars” movies.

That’s not to say the movie’s a flawless achievement, devoid of ham-fisted dialogue or predictable plot twists that often hobble movies designed for mass market appeal. But insofar as the premise is concerned, it catapults beyonds the cheesy nature of the material to deliver a serious, gripping big screen achievement elevated by astonishing special effects and filmmaking prowess to match.

The second entry directed by Matt Reeves following 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” the dynamic finale continues Reeves’ ability to transform the man-versus-simian premise into a fiery war movie, »

Bo Report: The latest 'Transformers' again shows a tiring with franchises

25 June 2017 7:30 PM, PDT | IF.com.au | See recent IF.com.au news »

'Transformers: The Last Knight'..

Moviegoers in Australia and internationally increasingly are showing signs of fatigue with the never-ending procession of Hollywood franchises.

The latest examples: The underwhelming debuts of the fifth film in the Transformers series and the third edition of Cars.

That coupled with the fast-sinking Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and The Mummy reboot indicates studios should spend more money on original content and less on tiring franchises.

The top 20 titles collectively minted $17 million last weekend, down 5 per cent on the previous frame, according to Numero..

Of the new independent releases, A Quiet Passion and Hindi drama Tubelight registered well while Una was Ok and McLaren tanked.

Paramount.s Transformers: The Last Knight rang up $4.46 million from 285 locations and $4.7 million with previews. That.s way down on the $8.8 million debut of Transformers: Age of Extinction in 2014, which finished up with $26.9 million.

‘Tubelight’ Review: Salman Khan’s Latest Good-Natured Story Lacks Substance

25 June 2017 4:23 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In 2015’s surprisingly poignant “Bajrangi Bhaijaan,” filmmaker Kabir Khan had even the most dogged of Salman Khan’s skeptics reaching for tissues, giving him the reputation as the one writer-director who could at last bring out a certain depth in the actor that, frankly, many of us didn’t think was there. So when “Tubelight” was announced as the duo’s next release, much of the excitement was rooted in the hopes of another winning collaboration.

“Bajrangi” and “Tubelight” have lots in common: Salman in the lead as a man-child with a golden heart. The lessons of loving thy neighbor and never giving up hope. An impossibly adorable child as Salman’s sidekick, pivotal to selling us on those messages. But where “Bajrangi” effectively harnessed the actor’s mega-star persona into a simple character that still — in true Salman tradition — had a significant moral undertone, “Tubelight” struggles to strike that balance, »

Tubelight Movie Review

25 June 2017 8:54 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Eid isn’t Eid if you don’t have a Salman Khan film to gush over. Since back in 2009, it is fully accepted in the industry that Salman owns Eid. Indian and world audiences have loved him over and again. Whether it was the remake of a Telugu film Pokiri in Wanted, the romantic spy action of Ek Tha Tiger or the cross-border comedy that was Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Salman has firmly settled himself as the man for Eid in Bollywood. Last year was no different with the blockbuster Sultan. From all indications however, this year will be different. Even though Kabir Khan is helming the megaphone again, this film is different to anything that has come before from Salman or Bollywood. For the first time, we are going to look at war from the perspective of the soldiers’ families.

“Kya tumhe yakeen hai?” From the poster, we have the immediate feel of change. »
