Doug grew up in Detroit and Minneapolis, eventually moved to N.Y.C., and attended the Juilliard School for a brief stint. After studying two years with Sanford Meisner and working a plethora of odd-ball jobs (including dressed as a giant Citibank card handing out fliers in Times Square), the actor worked in regional and Off-Broadway theater before landing his first feature supporting role in Fresh Horses (1988)

Doug was front man for a The B-52's-esque band called "The Yuh-uh-uh-uhs". The group performed at clubs and coffeehouses in and around Hollywood, cut a homegrown album entitled "YUH!", and made a music video of their cult-hit single, "Vampire Chickens".
Had a Yorkshire terrier dog, with ex-fiancée Kathleen Davison, called Hopper.
Is a fan of Stanley Kubrick's films and lists A Clockwork Orange (1971) as his favorite.

His third marriage to aspiring singer and actress Courtney Stodden took place on May 20, 2011, in the Chapel of the Flowers in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was 51; she was 16. Both of Stodden's parents were supportive of the choice; her mother Krista signed a legal consent form allowing the marriage, as well as having signed their marriage certificate as a witness. Hutchison was also Stodden's manager before they were married. He is three years older than his father-in-law Alex Stodden (born 1963) and one year younger than his mother-in-law Krista (born 1959).
