Viennese composer of classical music. A self-taught pianist, he learned musical notation from a local violinist. Won the Mozart Prize in 1909, the Mendelssohn Prize the following year. Studied at Frankfurt Conservatory. Awarded PhD in 1921. Taught piano in Berlin, 1929-33. Went into exile after the Nazi takeover, first to Paris and London, eventually settling in the U.S.. Composed seven symphonies, 13 string quartets and film music in Hollywood, 1934-55.
