Father of director Jonathan Kaplan.
Father of actresses Mady Kaplan and Nora Heflin.
Child prodigy on the piano, performing at Carnegie Hall by the age of 21. During World War II, wrote music for the Army Signals Corps and the OSS (precursor of the CIA) film units. First motion picture work at Eagle-Lion (1948), then 20th Century Fox. Work interrupted by HUAC blacklisting in 1953. Wrote incidental music for the theatre (both on and off Broadway), 1955-1961. Best remembered for his symphonic scoring of two classic Star Trek episodes, "The Doomsday Machine" and "The Eenemy Within".
Brrother-in-law of Van Heflin and Frances E. Neal.
Uncle of Vana Heflin, Kate Heflin, and Tracy Heflin.
