Pioneer cinematographer, active from early silent days. Prolific work for Fox (and, later, 20th Century Fox), with a lengthy career from 1925 to 1950. Co-recipient (with Ray Rennahan)of an Oscar for Best Cinematography for Blood and Sand (1941). Retired after 1960.

Not to be confused with British cinematographer Ernest Palmer (1901-1964).
