From hip-hop to bossa nova to Hawaiian-style ballads, “Sofia the First” draws from a hodgepodge of multicultural influences when compiling its musical soundtrack, a bevy of catchy tunes that has caught on like s’mores at a campfire with the preschool set. (Try not dancing to the bouncy rap ditty “Blue Ribbon Bunny.”)
“We try to use the different types of music as a way to provide a certain type of musical education,” says “Sofia” creator Craig Gerber. “In the first season, we ranged from doing ’50s rock and roll to swing to hip-hop and, as we move through the second season, we’re trying to push the boundaries even further to find other types of music, whether they be specific genres or from specific regions or just a type of music that kids aren’t used to hearing at that age. They keep the numbers original and surprising.”

Nickelodeon has unveiled a slew of new programming in advance of its upfront event Thursday evening at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall.
The Viacom cabler has greenlit three live-action series, including a new entry from veteran hit maker Dan Schneider, and four animated series for its preschool block, including another “Dora the Explorer” spinoff.
The three live-action entries will begin production in Los Angeles in the summer for debuts later this year.
“Henry Danger,” created by Schneider and Dana Olsen, revolves a 13-year-old who is a sidekick to a “super crime fighter.” Nickelodeon has ordered 20 episodes of the series toplined by Jace Norman.
“Bella and the Bullfrogs,” follows a Texas high school cheerleader (Brec Bassinger) who becomes the quarterback for the football team. Series has a 12-episode order and was created by Gabriel Garza and Jonathan Butler, tyro scribes who who were discovered through Nickelodeon’s Writing Program. »
