Film Feature: 13 Films That Define 2013

31 December 2013 1:27 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Including films that achieve the correct button-mashing combo to earn fancy kudos and are positively lauded, there are only a select few from the whole bunch that have the significance of “definitive.”

These are films that transcend ownership of marquee space, or their critical importance with film niches, and take on a wide cultural significance. Such happens to a point in which these movies now help outline our exact understanding of an entire year of film itself. These are the films that are created from specific thematic trends from all of our culture, or in some historical cases, became trends themselves.

From the paranormal parody of “A Haunted House” to the controversial “Wolf of Wall Street,” here are 13 films that best define the movie year that was 2013.

Chicago – Why are those three Oscar winners – Susan Sarandon, Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton – laughing on that fourth poster below? Because they managed to cash a paycheck on the way to participating in one of the Worst Films of 2013.

As studios pump out more and more product, more cinematic sewage clogs up the system. What do you need to avoid at Hell’s Video Store? Read on.

There are no rankings, because they are all rank. The ten are listed in descending levels of dread, caught up momentarily by the one-two punch (“Grudge Match!”) of Robert I-need-to-pay-off-my-vacation-homes De Niro. Each entry has a “Redeeming Factor,” because without it, HollywoodChicago.com film critic Patrick McDonald would probably rip out his eyeballs and have them blessed by Ultima (see below). And 10 of the worst films of 2013 are…

Producers Seek Dismissal in Dungeons & Dragons Lawsuit

16 December 2013 12:57 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in May, we reported that Hasbro filed a lawsuit against Sweetpea Entertainment and producer Courtney Solomon to halt their live-action reboot of Dungeons & Dragons. Today, we have word that Sweetpea filed a motion for a partial dismissal of the case. A hearing is set for January 24, just two months before the trial is scheduled to begin on March 25.

Our initial report on the reboot from last May revealed that producer Courtney Solomon, who directed the 2000 Dungeons & Dragons movie, is reworking a script entitled Chainmail, written by David Johnson, which is based on a more obscure game by Dungeons & Dragons creator E. Gary Gygax. The producer planned on shaping the script to fit into the Dungeons & Dragons world. However, Hasbro alleged that he didn't even have the rights to do so.

While Courtney Solomon did acquire the Dungeons & Dragons rights in 1994 to make his 2000 live-action feature, Hasbro's lawsuit claims that »

Spike Vgx Awards: 5 Reasons It Was An Embarrassing Celebration Of 2013 Games

8 December 2013 4:32 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Opening up this article bluntly, Spike TV’s annually televised Video Game Awards have never been a guiding light to anything in the industry. Back during its earlier days when WWE programming was associated with the channel, whoever was running the sham would shamelessly hand out high profile awards to Smackdown games… with WWE wrestlers actually seated in the audience.

Flashing forward to more recent years, the ceremony was at least tolerable and actually distributing nominees and awards in a logical thought process. You’d be hard-pressed to find a wealth of gamers visibly upset over Uncharted 2 or The Walking Dead winning Game of the Year. Commercially and critically those games are highly lauded and rightfully so. The more recent panel has also done a very admirable job at toning down on kissing the behind of any game trending worldwide for all of the wrong reasons – cough Call of Duty »

’12 Years a Slave,’ ‘Fruitvale Station’ Excluded From WGA Awards

3 December 2013 6:33 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Writers Guild of America has remained tough on qualifying scripts for its screenplay awards, excluding more than a dozen high-profile scripts, including John Ridley’s screenplay for “12 Years a Slave.”

The guild’s restrictions — far more rigorous than other guilds — require that scripts be produced under WGA jurisdiction or under a collective bargaining agreement in Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or the U.K. The WGA had no immediate comment on the exclusions, but the restrictions on eligibility are a longstanding practice at the guild.

Other notable screenplays excluded include Peter Morgan’s screenplay for “Rush”; Ryan Coogler’s script for  “Frutivale Station”; “Philomena,” written by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope and “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” penned by William Nicholson.

Voting to determine the WGA’s nominees launched Tuesday on 95 eligible screenplays — 41 in the adapted category and 54 in the original category. The guild’s restrictions also require that the »

First trailer for A Haunted House 2

22 November 2013 4:06 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Critically, A Haunted House failed. Financially, it made well over $60 million worldwide. Sadly, this has resulted in a sequel to be released in March of 2014 and today the first trailer for A Haunted House 2 has debuted online.

The sequel to the "hilarious" box office hit, A Haunted House 2 finds Malcom (Marlon Wayans) starting afresh with his new girlfriend (Jaime Pressly). A series of tired horror cliches, offensive stereotyping and terrible jokes ensue.

Check out the first trailer after the official synopsis....

"After losing his possessed girlfriend Kisha (Essence Atkins) in a car crash, Malcolm meets and falls for Megan, a single white mother of two. As he moves into a new home with the family, Malcolm discovers bizarre paranormal events surrounding the children and the property. To complicate matters, a back-from-the-dead Kisha moves in across the street, and there’s nothing worse than the scorn of a demonic ex-girlfriend. »

Every now and then we need to be reminded just how terrible some movies can be, that way we're thankful for the really good ones. Today's reminder comes in the form of the unnecessary horror spoof sequel A Haunted House 2, the follow-up to last year's stupid, cheap A Haunted House starring Marlon Wayans and a bunch of comedians desperate for a paycheck. Here's the first trailer for Michael Tiddes' A Haunted House 2 from Open Road Films: A Haunted House 2 is directed by Michael Tiddes and written by Rick Alvarez and Marlon Wayans (both of White Chicks), who »

‘A Haunted House 2′ Trailer: Marlon Wayans Spoofs ‘Sinister’ & ‘The Conjuring’

Earlier today Open Road Films released the first trailer for A Haunted House 2, the sequel to January’s A Haunted House. The new installment marks the return of Marlon Wayons as Malcom, the hapless pseudo-hero from the original film, who’s moved into another haunted house with his new girlfriend (Jaime Pressly) and her two kids.

The original, which followed Wayans and Essence Atkins as Kisha, premiered in January of this year and was met with mostly negative reviews. (It currently holds a measly 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though Metacritic was a bit kinder with a rating of 20 out of 100.) Despite the apparent consensus that it stunk, A Haunted House grossed nearly $60 million worldwide — impressive, considering it was filmed with a budget of only $2.5 million.
