Def Pictures has teamed with Live Nation Productions, WorldStar Hip Hop, and Hunting Lane Films for the Netflix comedy “The After Party.” Principal photography has begun on the coming-of-age film, which is written and directed by Ian Edelman (“How to Make It in America”). It is Live Nation’s first scripted production.
The movie has a music business theme, following two buddies looking to land a record deal before one heads to college and the other to the military. The story takes place during “one wild night,” but will shoot for six weeks in New York, including on location at The Meadows Music and Arts Festival at Citi Field in Queens, and a live concert at the Gramercy Theater.

Matlin will play Jocelyn Turner, an ex-fbi agent who was known at one time as the best undercover agent in the field until a bomb blew up near her and rendered her deaf. The FBI put her out to pasture, but now she’s being brought back to join a special unit with several other returning characters.
Matlin, in real life, is deaf. She is a prominent member of the National Association of the Deaf, and is the only deaf performer to have won the Academy Award for best actress, which she won in 1987 for her first film, “Children of a Lesser God.” Over the course of her career, she has also won a Golden Globe and has been nominated for four Emmys.

Disney Junior has announced that David Oyelowo (Selma, Star Wars Rebels) has joined the cast of the animated series The Lion Guard for its second season, where he will lend his voice to the iconic role of Scar, the villainous younger brother to Mufasa. Fans of the Quantico TV show on ABC should brace themselves for some major changes. While we've known for a while that creator Josh Safran had stepped down as showrunner, his replacement had been unknown, 'til now. Code Black creator Michael Seitzman has been tapped as the new executive producer and Quantico showrunner. After the ABC anti-terrorism drama eked out a scant 13-episode third season, Yasmine Al Massri, who played played twin FBI recruits Nimah and Raina, announced her departure. Michael Seitzman, who created “Code Black,” will take over as showrunner on ABC’s “Quantico” for Season 3. Seitzman replaces Joshua Safran, who created “Quantico” and stepped down as showrunner after its second season. The news comes as a number of cast members are not returning, including Yasmine Al Massri and Pearl Thusi. Priyanka Chopra, Jake McLaughlin, Johanna Braddy and Blair Underwood will all continue on the show. He takes over the role from Josh Safran, who left “Quantico” at the end of Season 2. However, Safran will remain with the show’s third season as a consultant. Seitzman will continue to serve as an executive producer and showrunner on “Code Black.” Both shows are produced by ABC Television Studios, where Seitzman is currently under an overall deal.

Blair Underwood solidified his place as an industry mainstay with his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins on the NBC legal drama “L.A. Law” from 1987-1994. Since then, he’s gone on to have notable turns in shows including “Sex and the City,” “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” and “Dirty Sexy Money.” He recently joined the cast of “Quantico.” Underwood has been helping to bring nonprofits to reality TV by executive-producing the daytime show “Give” — which he describes as “ ‘Undercover Boss’ meets ‘Extreme Makeover’ ” — through his production company, Intrepid, along with Bungalow Media and Litton Entertainment. He got his first mention in Variety on April 18, 1984, for a Carnegie Mellon University production of “Guys and Dolls” led by Billy Wilson, who directed and choreographed Broadway’s “Bubbling Brown Sugar.”
