‘Agents of Shield’ Goes to War in Action-Packed Season Finale (Spoilers)

12 May 2015 8:30 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The two-hour “Marvel’s Agents of Shield” finale certainly didn’t scrimp on action, capping a season in which the ABC series continued to do a synergistic tap dance – operating within the confines of the broader Marvel universe – while pursuing an extended plot involving the fate of Skye (Chloe Bennett), whose origin story became a season-long theme. After a rocky first season, the program benefited from expanding its cast, the shrewd use of guest stars and an embrace of serialized storytelling. While it’s clear “Shield” won’t be a major hit – the numbers, in fact, are fairly mediocre – it has settled into a respectable holding pattern.

None of that appeared certain after season one, which arrived amid inflated expectations and hoopla; at times felt like a run-in with the enhanced villain of the week; and finally had to deal with a “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” tie-in that essentially »

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 17: “Melinda”

Written by DJ Doyle

Directed by Garry A. Brown

Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC

Despite teasing the return of Ward in “Afterlife”, Agents of Shield delays the return of Shield’s favorite double-agent with a flashback episode. “Melinda” takes a trip back in time to seven years ago, and recounts the origin of May’s nickname “the Cavalry.” Predictably, this is not a happy story, and it involves a young woman whose superpowers are a danger to the people around her, drawing obvious parallels to Skye. It also sheds some light on why May is so protective of Skye now that she is super-powered, and why failing to keep Skye safe could devastate her.

In the main storyline, Ming-Na Wen proves up to the task of leading the episode. May is a fan favorite character as the team bad-ass, but here »

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Recap: “Melinda”

15 April 2015 7:25 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Welcome back, true believers! Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s “Melinda” showed us the origin of May, and the reasoning behind why she’s the “Cavalry.” Unfortunately, this story is often pushed to the side to focus on May training with her mother, and May, in the future, being told that Coulson had been working on something called, “The Theta Project.” It’s another bombshell, and perhaps another nail in the coffin that is Coulson as director of S.H.I.E.L.D.; it’s another secret he deemed too important to tell his teammates. Man, have we ever been down this road too many times in these past two seasons. Every time you think Coulson has taken a turn and realized that he may in fact be wrong about withholding secrets from his team, he brings out a big bag of new ones that dangle over their heads. The idea »

For a full two years, Ming-Na Wen could only wonder why her character on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had earned the nickname “The Cavalry” – and why hearing that moniker was invariably met with a disapproving glare.

“Since the beginning, I had to create my own ideas and my own stories [behind the nickname],” the actress told TVLine before heading out to the Los Angeles screening of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, “because they wouldn’t tell me anything!”

Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 episode 13 review: One Of Us

This week’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. introduced Cal’s underwhelming new villainous team. Here’s our review…

This review contains spoilers.

2.13 One Of Us

When Kyle MacLachlan’s Cal started hopping about and planning out-loud to ‘wreak some havoc’ for S.H.I.E.L.D. a few weeks ago, there was a worry in the back of my mind that he was acting a little like a villain from the Adam West Batman series from the sixties. Add a colourful costume and you could just picture him plotting schemes in a secret base with Cesar Romero. Sadly, these fears were realised this week when One Of Us served up Cal’s cartoonish super-villain squad.

As guest villains go, we were fairly excited to see Angar The Screamer, a gloriously obscure comic book character, incarnated on the small screen. However, he was woefully underused. We only really saw one example of his power being used, »
