Golden Globes Review: Seth Meyers Went for the Jugular and Oprah Brought Down the House in One Helluva Show

Golden Globes Review: Seth Meyers Went for the Jugular and Oprah Brought Down the House in One Helluva Show
Before Seth Meyers set foot in the Beverly Hilton Hotel Sunday night, he was already in a hole. As a man hosting a Golden Globes ceremony that was rightfully being driven by women’s stories, the question on the tip of everyone’s tongue was why a woman wasn’t running point at HFPA’s 75th celebration.

And to be clear, there’s not a good reason one wasn’t. Aside from picking past hosts like Amy Poehler & Tina Fey, Janine Turner, or… well, that’s it (the Globes didn’t use a host regularly until 2010), there are a slew of incredible comediennes who would’ve absolutely killed it this year. We would’ve loved to see that show. Really, it would’ve been incredible — but the show we got wasn’t Meyers’ to claim. He delivered a damn fine and exceptionally funny performance under raw, delicate conditions, but this was Oprah’s Golden Globes,

Review: Monkey Shines (Blu-ray)

  • DailyDead
Oh my, how the mighty had fallen! I had vague memories of Monkey Shines when I watched it over twenty years ago and, after revisiting this, it all makes sense why this film doesn’t spring to mind when I think of Romero’s great early body of work. George A. Romero’s first studio film ideally should have been the perfect opportunity for him to showcase his talent in a direction that nobody would expect and on paper it would seem that was his intention.

The story itself isn’t exactly straight horror. In fact, the first hour of the film plays off of a tragedy and is meant to create empathy for Jason Beghe’s character in a way that Christy Brown earns empathy in My Left Foot, but Beghe’s character isn’t developed enough to forgive or understand his selfish demeanor. He’s portrayed as simply

The poetry of ‘Northern Exposure’

There are certain images that stick with me from my childhood TV consumption: turtles eating pizza in a sewer; Kevin Sorbo in leather pants; and a moose serenely walking down the street. The latter image is the opening to one of my favorite TV shows of all time – Northern Exposure. I didn’t remember much other than that moose until I watched the entire series on DVD several years ago. The re-discovered show was instantly a favorite for its consistently philosophical, yet comedic, treatment of the human condition. I still don’t run into many people who remember the dramedy. It seems to be largely forgotten, which is strange considering that it won two Peabody Awards and the series creators, Joshua Brand and John Falsey, and many of the show’s writers would go on to create and write episodes of The Sopranos. While my list of favorite shows continues to grow,
