Jada Pinkett Smith Calls Raunchiness of ‘Girls Trip’ ‘a Beautiful Thing’

14 July 2017 9:38 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“Black women, we made this movie for you and it’s about time you received the big-screen treatment,” director Malcolm D. Lee told the crowd of moviegoers at the Regal L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday.

Lee was at the premiere of his upcoming comedy “Girls Trip,” comparable to “The Hangover” and “Bridesmaids,” starring Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, and breakout Tiffany Haddish.

In his review, Variety‘s Peter Debruge praises the latter actress as a scene-stealer in her role as the outspoken friend in her group, the Flossy Posse, but Haddish’s response to the compliment had reporters in stitches.

“I appreciate it, but you know I’m from South Central so I don’t ever like to be told that I stole anything because I’m not a thief and you can go to jail for that,” she quipped.

Haddish, who also appeared in “Keanu” and NBC’s “The Carmichael Show,” said »

Film Review: ‘Girls Trip’

12 July 2017 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Move over, Tyler Perry. Let “Girls Trip” director Malcolm D. Lee show you how it’s done. In what could easily prove to be the summer’s word-of-mouth comedy sensation, Lee sends four black ladies — Aka the “Flossy Posse” — on a long-overdue weekend getaway, where “Madea’s Class Reunion” meets “The Hangover” for a raunchy mix of empowerment and intoxication at Essence Fest, New Orleans. There’s girl fighting, male nudity, multiple self-help lessons, an impromptu prayer session and not one but two musical numbers — all of it so consistently outrageous that audiences shouldn’t even miss the absence of a cross-dressing black lady.

Whereas Perry’s work serves mostly as counter-programming “for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf,” appealing to those who typically feel more comfortable going to church than going to the movies, “Girls Trip” has something for everyone — provided that they’re old enough to see a hard-r-rated comedy »

10 Great Fiction Podcasts to Listen to Right Now

25 May 2017 12:38 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Perhaps your average idea of a podcast is a public radio news program, with longform journalism uncovering a hidden area of everyday life. Maybe it’s an interview show, where hosts dig into the personal and professional lives of experts in any number of fields. Your favorite might even be a show where a handful of people talk about their favorite bits of pop culture — of which IndieWire has a few! — every week.

Beyond those podcasting subgenres is an emerging world of quality audio fiction, scripted programming that follows a carefully crafted story arc. Sometimes these shows are episodic, stretching over years’ worth of episodes. Others are less straightforward spins on a theatrical premise. There are enough shows out there to flood your queue, but for now, here are 10 quality podcasts worth subscribing to (if you haven’t already).

Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah get rowdy in the new trailer for Girls Trip

11 May 2017 5:28 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Author: Zehra Phelan

Hold on to your knickers, another Hangover-inspired film based on the ‘fairer’ sex is about to gracelessly hit our screens in Girls Trip. Judging from the newly released trailer it isn’t far off the upcoming Rough Night, except there are no accidentally dead male stripper in sight.

Do you fancy watching Jada Pinkett Smith releasing her bowels while suspended from mid-air onto a gazing crowd, or even four feisty women getting high on Absinthe and causing an all out brawl in a dance-off in the middle of a club? Well, that’s what you get as the four lifelong friends decide to get away for the weekend and relive their younger days as potty mouths take hold as well as their raging sexual hormones. Oh, these ladies are nasty, lively and horny and slightly offensive when one declares “I’m getting white girl drunk” – well, this »

Second Full-Length Trailer for 'Girls Trip' New Orleans Party Comedy

10 May 2017 5:52 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"This weekend is about us! We deserve this." Ugh, here we go again. Universal has released a second trailer for the summer comedy Girls Trip, opening in theaters this July. This wild comedy stars Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish as a group of friends who decide to take a "girls trip" together. This film also stars Larenz Tate, Mike Colter, Kofi Siriboe, Kate Walsh. The last two trailers for this did not look good, and honestly this one looks even worse. I highly recommend the other four-women-party-comedy movie Rough Night instead (see the latest trailer), if that's the kind of comedy you're looking for this summer. Because this seriously does not look funny at all. Not even worth watching. Here's the second official trailer for Malcolm D. Lee's Girls Trip, from Universal's YouTube: You can still watch the first teaser trailer for Girls Trip here, »

Take A Wild Journey With The New Trailer For ‘Girls Trip’

10 May 2017 8:21 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It seems that it doesn’t take much to make a wacky, wild comedy these days. You just need a simple premise and some stars, and you’re off to the races, and so it goes for “Girls Trip.”

Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tiffany Haddish, Larenz Tate, Kate Walsh, Mike Colter, and Kofi Siriboe star in this movie which sees the conveniently tax-break-for-movie-productions-friendly city of New Orleans as the setting for a bunch of women to let their hair down.

Oscar Pre-Parties 2017: Inside Alfre Woodard’s Sistahs Soiree, Chanel, Bulgari & More

25 February 2017 1:40 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

There is always a lot to celebrate during Oscar week, but many of this year’s special occasions toasted to something in particular: a historical year for Oscar nominations by the Academy. Diversity and inclusion was front and center for celebrations throughout the week, from Alfre Woodard’s Sistahs Soiree, to Common’s pre-Oscar dinner (pictured above), to African-American publications Ebony and Essence toasting to black Hollywood at their respective fetes.

Women were also a part of the conversation. While the landmark moment for people of color was applauded, the ladies in the industry were still pushing for progress at the Women in Film’s annual cocktail reception, which sprinkled in motivational speeches from Brie Larson and Meryl Streep with the hors d’oeuvres.

Take a peek inside this year’s pre-Oscar celebratory gatherings below:

"We gunna be staying up late, drinking, and making memories that we can laugh about for the rest of our lives." Universal has revealed a crazy new red band trailer to follow-up the teaser for the upcoming summer comedy Girls Trip, directed by Malcolm D. Lee (director of last year's Barbershop: The Next Cut).
