Mousterpiece Cinema, Episode 75: ‘One Magic Christmas’

15 December 2012 7:06 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Is the Christmas season one tinged with bleakness? Do all the great holiday movies–It’s A Wonderful Life or A Christmas Carol, for example–begin at a place of immense sadness? Is that what makes them great? And how does religion factor into our enjoyment of holiday films? Lots of heady topics to unwrap on this week’s new Mousterpiece Cinema, where Josh and Mike tackle the 1985 Disney film One Magic Christmas, starring Harry Dean Stanton and Mary Steenburgen. And yes, in between all of this craziness, Mike was able to turn the show into a brand-new Ducksterpiece Theatre. Plus, at the end, a bit of chatter about the new Hobbit film, which Josh reviewed at Sound on Sight. Your early Christmas present is here–you just have to listen to it!

Extended Thoughts on ‘One Magic Christmas’

One Magic Christmas

Directed by Phillip Borsos

Written by Phillip Borsos, Barry Healey, Thomas Meehan

Starring Mary Steenburgen, Harry Dean Stanton, Elisabeth Harnois, Gary Basaraba

I suppose it’s perfectly fitting that religion became a topic of discussion on our most recent episode, seeing as the movie we were discussing was set at Christmas, one of the most religious times of year. I alluded to this on the podcast, but I was not raised in any kind of religious setting. If secularism has become the prevailing attitude during the 21st-century holiday season, as is so often espoused by hand-wringing media pundits, it sprang forth from homes like the one I grew up in. Like Mike’s mom, my mother was raised Catholic and taught by nuns. She grew up in the working-class suburbs of Buffalo, New York, one of six children living under the rule of two strict, God-fearing parents. »

It's not often you see a photo of Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas, Kevin Kline and Robert De Niro in the same room together, but considering they all star in Jon Turteltaub's upcoming batchelor party comedy, Last Vegas, perhaps it should come as no surprise. Though the leads are somewhat older than they used to be, the press release that accompanies the shot is keen to dismiss any 'Hangover The Hill' gags and concentrate on the audience-pulling power of four men who've scored "six Oscar® wins and 14 nominations and accumulated over an estimated $16.6 billion at the worldwide box office."As for Turteltaub, he's the man behind Cool Runnings, National Treasure and The Sorcerer's Apprentice, directing a script written by Dan Fogelman (Cars, Bolt, Tangled and Crazy, Stupid, Love) with Mary Steenburgen, Jerry Ferrara, Romany Malco and Roger Bart in supporting roles. The plot revolves around three married men taking their »

The film stars an impressive quartet who have garnered six Oscars and 14 nominations over their long, celebrated careers: Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline. Kline, the youngest of the group, is a sprightly 65; Freeman, the oldest, is 75. The Tortoise Pack has begun filming on location in Las Vegas, according to CBS Films and Good Universe. Best Movie Ever?: "Ordinary People"

10 September 2012 10:31 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Family tragedies. I crave them.

I like 'em screamy, eerily silent, fulla tears, and without too much recovery. So, Ordinary People? Yeah, it's my jam.

First of all, Ordinary People is the greatest Best Picture of the 1980s. Count 'em up: From Chariots of Fire to Driving Miss Daisy, they all pale in comparison to Robert Redford's directorial debut, a touching, incisive, and gripping drama about what happens to a Midwestern family when its elder (and more beloved) son perishes in a boating accident. The legend goes that Ordinary People robbed Raging Bull of its rightful Best Picture prize in 1980, but both movies are pretty flawless and achieve exactly what they set out to do. And if we're counting up killer performances, Ordinary People packs a couple more than Raging Bull, which revolves around De Niro's tour de force. Not that that's a real criticism, but I love Ordinary People »
