Erica (Cleopatra Coleman) joins husband-and-wife team Phil (Forte) and Carol (Kristen Schaal) on the expedition, which takes the trio to a cabin in the woods. ‘Loving’ Director Jeff Nichols Launches Arkansas Cinema Society, With a Festival in 2018 — Exclusive

Inspired by Richard Linklater’s work for the last 32 years with the Austin Film Society, writer-director Jeff Nichols (“Loving,” “Midnight Special”) wants to build a cinephile organization in Arkansas that is just as impressive.

“Little Rock and Arkansas don’t have anything like that,” he said. “One of my biggest hurdles as a kid in Arkansas was I just didn’t have any connection points with the global film industry.”

Eventually, Nichols found people in his life who helped him to see that “real people do make movies and it’s possible.” Now having achieved some success, he seeks to “create a cinema society that gets people together to watch movies and filmmakers they may not know about, to not only bring films but filmmakers to Arkansas, to have conversations people can see in front of them in a way that’s immediate and tangible.”

‘Time After Time’ Review: A Super-Hot Jack the Ripper Evokes Peculiar Questions in Sporadically Fun Time Travel Drama

3 March 2017 9:14 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Should Jack the Ripper be super-hot?

The legendary serial killer has proven a fascinating historical figure for over a century, but that’s largely due to the way his crimes remain shadowed in anonymity, not because of his well-defined torso. And yet as depicted by Josh Bowman in the new series “Time After Time,” Jack the Ripper’s handsomeness and charm overshadow his murderous tendencies. He even addresses said hotness directly during the first episode, saying to his one-time friend H.G. Wells, “I know, I look absolutely dashing.”

That’s right: He’s sexy and he knows it.

It’s weird to see such unambiguous objectification of a serial killer on screen. In fact, this might be the weirdest aspect of the time travel drama, premiering this Sunday on ABC. A reimagining, if you will, of the 1979 film written and directed by Nicholas Meyer, “Time After Time’s” first two episodes serve largely as set-up. »

The Afterlife Is Real in Trailer for Robert Redford, Jason Segel and Rooney Mara’s ‘The Discovery’

22 February 2017 4:48 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Netflix dropped its first full trailer for “The Discovery,” the sci-fi film starring Robert Redford, Jason Segel, and Rooney Mara that offers a new take on the meaning of life and death.

Redford plays Dr. Harper, a scientist whose verification of the afterlife, or a “new plane of existence” changes the way people think about death. In fact, it seems to make people want it, sparking more than a million suicides around the world by those attempting to “get there.”

“How can you keep a discovery so vital to our existence a secret?” Redford’s Harper says in the trailer after Mary Steenburgen’s journalist character asks a question about his personal responsibility.

‘The Discovery’ Trailer: The Secrets of Charlie McDowell’s New Mind-Bender Begin to Unfold

Don’t invite Mary Steenburgen to your home if you’re not ready to answer the hard-hitting questions. In the latest trailer for “The Discovery,” Charlie McDowell’s provocative sci-fi exploration of the the nature of reality and mortality, Doctor Thomas Harber (Robert Redford) learns that lesson the hard way.

An earlier trailer framed the film as a twisted love story between Rooney Mara and Jason Segel, but the follow-up tells a far more fractured story. Doctor Harbor’s research led him to prove the existence of the afterlife; as a result, people are committing suicide in the millions. Buoyed by his interview with Steenburgen, who plays the reporter interviewing the Doctor for the first time since he made his discovery, the trailer cuts to far more sinister snippets underscored by a tense classical medley. »

Martin’s first foray behind the camera won The Founders Awards for Best Narrative Feature at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, and is now hitting theaters this summer, just in time to give audiences the kind of sweetly melancholic shot in the arm seasonal cinema rarely provides.

Official Trailer for Demetri Martin's Directorial Debut Comedy 'Dean'

15 February 2017 12:59 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"First big thing in your life you're never going to get over." CBS Films has debuted a trailer for Demetri Martin's feature directorial debut, an indie comedy titled Dean, about a young man trying to figure himself out after his mother passes away. Kevin Kline co-stars as his father, and the full cast includes Gillian Jacobs, Reid Scott, Meryl Hathaway, and Mary Steenburgen. This is described in the marketing as "a comedic and heartfelt tale about a father and son coming to terms with love, loss and everything in between." I really like the music in this trailer, and the quirky hand-drawn title cards are a nice touch. I feel like this would be best seen at a film festival, but it only played at Tribeca last year. Still, looks pretty good. Here's the first official trailer for Demetri Martin's Dean, direct from YouTube (via Tfs): Dean »

First Trailer for Demetri Martin’s Directorial Debut ‘Dean’

15 February 2017 10:34 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

One of the more pleasant, witty features I saw last year was the directorial debut of comedian/writer/actor Demetri Martin. While he’s popped up in films from Ang Lee, Steven Soderbergh, Lake Bell, and more in years past, it was refreshing to see something genuinely in his own voice with Dean, which picked up the Best Narrative Feature award at Tribeca Film Festival last year.

Ahead of a summer release from CBS Films, the first trailer has now landed for the film which finds his character dealing with the loss of his mother as he attempts to launch a career and re-connect with his dad. (Yes, familiar territory to be sure, but it’s mostly handled in a refreshing way from Martin.)

I said in my review, “The most piercing comedy is often mined from the darker aspects of life, presenting our fears in a new, hopefully amusing light. »
