‘Catfight’ Finds Both Brutality and Humanity In Its Bloody Brawls

Pick of the WeekCatfight

What is it? Two old college friends cross paths as adults and beat the ever-loving crap out of each other.

Why see it? Onur Tukel’s latest is also his best thanks in part to the lead performances by Sandra Oh and Anne Heche. They do a good job of manipulating our sympathies and concerns ensuring that our loyalties shift from act to act. Themes of female friendships, class distinctions, and redemption run through alongside a satirical look at modern life, and there’s a terrifically wicked streak throughout. Funny, smart, and brutal are all apt descriptors for this cynical look at our violent selves.

How Kurt Russell Redefined Heroism in ‘Dark Blue,’ An La Riots Story 15 Years Ahead of Its Time

24 April 2017 11:03 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

When Kurt Russell stepped into the detective’s uniform for “Dark Blue,” he wasn’t just accepting another movie role. He was taking a stand. He was destroying an image he’d spent two decades building, and turning his back on the American hero audiences had come to recognize at the sight of him.

Becoming a villain sounds kind of heroic, doesn’t it?

It was.

Dark Blue” is one of those low-budget cop dramas you don’t see made at studios anymore. At a reported $15 million, Ron Shelton’s feature couldn’t even make back its budget. First released at an Italian film festival in mid-December 2002, it was dumped in the U.S. during February 2003 for a cumulative worldwide haul of just over $12 million.

Big surprise. Opening out of awards season, the movie chronicled events leading up and through the Los Angeles riots in 1992, depicting a racially divided city »

The Strangers 2 Producer Reveals Details Of The Long Awaited Sequel

12 April 2017 10:48 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Home invasion tales are a well-worn narrative in the horror movie genre – but every once in a while, a film comes along that gives that tired scenario a shot in the arm. 2008’s The Strangers was one such project, with its story of relationship discord playing out as background to a terrifying encounter with masked intruders. A sequel has been in the works for a number of years, but is finally picking up momentum – as The Strangers 2 – with director Johannes Roberts at the helm.

The Strangers was notable for the way in which it specifically sought to leave the motivations of the attackers a mystery. Focusing on the perspective of the victims, the film was anchored by the idea that the target couple (played by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman) would have no idea why they were being terrorised, and so the audience doesn’t either. Until now, The Strangers 2 »
