Film Review: ‘Awaken the Shadowman’

Film Review: ‘Awaken the Shadowman’
A slow burn of a horror drama that doesn’t build toward quite enough of a blaze to be truly memorable, “Awaken the Shadowman” nonetheless ranks a cut above the genre norm for its atmospheric and confident setup. This debut feature for director “J.S. Wilson” (actually a pseudonym for the three scenarist-producers, two of whom are also the male leads) finds estranged brothers reunited over their mother’s disappearance, but increasingly troubled even more by weird goings-on in the town where they grew up. Some horror fans will decry the lack of gore — or even much violence — here. More discerning ones, however, may just lament that a film with such a strong first two-thirds grows rushed and underwhelming in the last lap.

After a brief prologue depicting an imperiled young woman and baby in 1964 Connecticut, we meet present-day protagonist Adam (James Zimbardi), a Redding, Calif. construction worker struggling to meet the needs of his small family — to

'Fargo' Season 3: Noah Hawley and Cast on Sex, Lies and Stamp Collections
Most showrunners have their own particular ways of coming up with storylines or charting full seasons for returning series. For Noah Hawley, the process usually starts with taking a nap. "It's kind of always been like this," he says sheepishly, calling in from a chilly set in Calgary, Alberta. "I mean, what became Fargo started when I lied down one afternoon while I was writing and dreamed about two men, one civilized and one not, meeting in an emergency room. For the second season, same thing – only it was a

A Supercut Celebrating the Power and Beauty of ‘Legion,’ the Best New Show of 2017

The game-changing series gets a succinct and gorgeous tribute.

If you missed Noah Hawley’s Legion on FX, you missed one of the greatest television series to come along since, well, Noah Hawley’s Fargo. Not only is Legion an inventive take on the Marvel Comics’ character it’s based on, it’s also a new kind of “superhero” story, one that places fragile humanity ahead of indestructible superhumanity, one that delves into the cursed psyche of the genetically blessed, one that emphasizes how not all heroes are born heroic, and one that reveals the power — great or small — derived from mastering our personal flaws.

Besides being a fascinating narrative game of Chutes and Ladders played on a Moebius Strip between two mirrors, and in addition to featuring career-altering performances from Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast), Rachel Keller (Fargo), Bill Irwin (Interstellar), Jean Smart (Designing Women) and Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Rec) — who is “Alex DeLarge,” “Hannibal
