Singleton, Wahlberg like 'Brothers'

John Singleton has signed to direct and Mark Wahlberg is in negotiations to star in Four Brothers for Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Paramount Pictures. The contemporary feature concerns four brothers who set out to avenge the death of their mother. Dave Elliot and Paul Lovett are writing the script. Last month, Singleton signed on to develop the video game Fear & Respect for Midway Games, in which Viacom CEO Sumner Redstone is the controlling shareholder. The video game is being developed by producer Christine Peters as a feature film for the Viacom-owned studio (HR 9/24). Wahlberg is set to appear in Paramount's The Italian Job 2, which he opted to appear in over Lions Gate's The Black Dahlia, directed by Brian De Palma. Singleton, who is repped by UTA, most recently directed 2 Fast 2 Furious. His credits include Baby Boy, Shaft and Boyz N the Hood. He also is repped by attorney Steve Barnes. Wahlberg is repped by Endeavor. Elliot and Lovett are repped by CAA. »

Midway gives its 'Respect' to Singleton

Paramount Pictures, on behalf of Christine Peters' CFP Prods., has optioned worldwide film rights to Midway Games' new property Fear & Respect, which John Singleton is developing as a video game. The urban-action adventure game is set in South Central Los Angeles and will be available in the fourth quarter of 2005 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The deal reflects the synergy between the video game and feature film industries. Singleton, who has directed such films as Boyz N the Hood and the Shaft remake, is collaborating on the game. The film option is the second deal in as many weeks between CFP/Paramount and Midway, in which Viacom's Sumner Redstone is controlling shareholder. CFP recently acquired the Midway property Area 51. Fear & Respect is a third-person game about a young man who has to make survival choices in the urban world of Los Angeles. »

Hayes gets in on Singleton's 'Hustle'

Stax recording artist Isaac Hayes has joined the cast of Hustle & Flow, John Singleton's first independently financed and produced feature. Based on a script by Southern filmmaker Craig Brewer, who also will direct, the $2.8 million film is set to start shooting early next month in Memphis. The story centers on DJay (Terrence Howard), a thirtysomething Southern hip-hop artist and hustler who enlists a cross section of the local community to help him realize his dreams of making a record. When he hears that a superstar rapper (Ludacris) is coming to town, he gets ready for the hustle of his life. Hayes plays the local club owner. Hayes joins a cast that includes Anthony Anderson, Taryn Manning, DJ Qualls, Taraji Henson, Paula Parker, Elise Neal and rapper Ludacris as Skinny Black. »

Singleton to unleash Columbia's 'Cage'

John Singleton is in negotiations to develop and direct Luke Cage for Columbia Pictures. Neal Moritz and his Original Films are producing along with Marvel Studios' Avi Arad. Cage is about a former gang member who is framed for a crime he didn't commit. In prison, he volunteers for a medical experiment that goes awry, giving him superstrength and bulletproof skin. Using his newfound powers, Luke Cage escapes and becomes a hero for hire. Ben Ramsey wrote the script. »
