Gartner moves to Mosaic film unit

Former MGM production president Alex Gartner has joined Mosaic Media Group as a producing partner in Mosaic film unit Atlas Entertainment. In that division, Gartner will develop and produce projects with Mosaic partner and Atlas founder Chuck Roven. Gartner exited his post at MGM in fall 2002. Since then, he's been working as an independent producer on the studio's Barbershop 2: Back in Business and the Media 8's The Upside of Anger for filmmaker Mike Binder. That film, starring Joan Allen, Kevin Costner, Erika Christensen, Evan Rachel Wood, Alicia Witt and Keri Russell, will be released by New Line Cinema this year. »

Russell, Brolin into Spielberg's 'West'

Keri Russell is set and Josh Brolin is in negotiations to join the cast of TNT's epic 12-hour limited series Into the West, from executive producer Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks TV. Also coming on board the project is helmer Simon Wincer (TNT's Monte Walsh), who has signed on to direct one of the series' six two-hour parts. Russell and Brolin join previously cast Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Settle. Into the West, budgeted at about $50 million, tells the story of the opening of the American West in the 19th century through the eyes of two multigenerational families, one of white settlers and one of Native Americans. »

'Magic' in the cards for CBS, Hallmark

CBS has given the green light to Hallmark Hall of Fame's telefilm The Magic of Ordinary Days, with Keri Russell, Skeet Ulrich and Mare Winningham attached to star. Based on Ann Howard Creel's novel, the film is a love story set in a small Colorado town during World War II. It centers on a young unmarried Denver woman (Russell) who is banished to Wiston, Colo., in an arranged marriage to a local farmer (Ulrich) by her stern minister father when she becomes pregnant. »

New Line grabs 'Anger' for U.S.

TORONTO -- MDP Worldwide Entertainment on Tuesday said New Line Cinema had picked up the U.S. rights to the Mike Binder family comedy The Upside of Anger, which stars Joan Allen and Kevin Costner. Written and directed by Binder (The Mind of the Married Man), The Upside of Anger is a co-production of Montreal-based MDP Worldwide and the German film financier VIP Medienfonds. Terms of the distribution deal were not disclosed. " 'The Upside of Anger' hits the perfect note of dramatic performances with hilarious moments, delivered by an incredibly talented cast," Rolf Mittweg, president and chief operating officer of New Line Worldwide Distribution and Marketing, said in a statement. The comedy portrays Terry, a single mother played by Joan Allen, and her four daughters in a comedic and dysfunctional relationship with a family friend, played by Kevin Costner. Also starring in The Upside of Anger is Evan Rachel Wood, Erika Christensen, Keri Russell and Alicia Witt. Producer credits on the project go to Alex Gartner, Jack Binder and Sammy Lee, with Stewart Hall, Andreas Grosch and Andreas Schmid sharing executive producer credits. »
