USA Sets Season-Two Premiere Date for ‘Mr. Robot’

20 April 2016 12:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The second season of USA’s acclaimed drama “Mr. Robot” will launch July 13, the network announced Wednesday.

Last summer, the drama starring Rami Malek as a young cyber-security engineer and Christian Slater as the mysterious leader of an underground hacker group averaged a 1.1 rating in adults 18-49 and 2.74 million viewers overall in Nielsen’s “live plus-7” estimates — standing as the network’s No. 2-rated program of 2015 in the demo, behind only “Suits.” It’s unclear if “Mr. Robot” will again follow “Suits” when it airs on Wednesday this summer.

Following the events of fsociety’s 5/9 hack on multi-national company Evil Corp., the second season of “Mr. Robot” will explore the consequences of that attack as well as the illusion of control.

New recurring guest stars in season two include Craig Robinson, hip hop artist Joey Bada$$, Sandrine Holt, Michael Maize, Dorothi Fox and Luke Robertson. Returning cast members include Bd Wond, »

Mr. Robot – Season 1 DVD Review: “Exceptional and full of intrigue”

11 April 2016 4:57 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

At its crux, Mr. Robot is a series full of realised potential, and it shows as a Golden Globe winner for Best Television Drama. It artfully taps into a spectrum of socially relevant, sycophantic ubiquity that extends so far as to both provoke and numb the senses concurrently, making way for the intense, albeit meaningful social commentary that boils beneath its outer shell. The show stars Rami Malek, who plays Elliot, a socially anxious cyber-security expert turned hacker who is recruited by a mysterious anarchist known only as ‘Mr. Robot’. Along with the likes of Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin, Franky Shaw and Gloria Rueben, we see a series of fully-fleshed, complicated personas shine and falter – all skilfully acted – as their respective relationships to Elliot begin to unfold.

Though originally meant to take form as a feature film, creator and writer Sam Esmail is an architect to a series so contrive and mysterious, »

Film Review: ‘Jean of the Joneses’

30 March 2016 12:33 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The messy lives of young aspiring writers and the dysfunctional families that spawned them have long provided fertile if inevitably over-tilled material for many an independent filmmaker. If “Jean of the Joneses” feels fresher than most multigenerational ensemble dramedies, credit not only the relative novelty of an all-black, mostly female cast, but also writer-director Stella Meghie’s talent for suggesting the invisible bonds that unite her characters, despite their many disagreements and (in some cases) general disagreeability. Inspired by her own family life though not strictly autobiographical, Meghie’s endearingly acerbic debut feature is a work of modest ambition and commercial outlook, but that modesty proves intrinsic to its appeal, which deserves to be discovered at more stops along the festival circuit following its SXSW premiere.

Jean Jones (Taylour Paige), the 25-year-old Jamaican-American woman who lends the film its playfully arch title, has been hailed in some literary circles as »

Causality and Kindness: Nelson’s Latest Look at All the Lonely People

The multifaceted Tim Blake Nelson unveils his latest directorial effort in nearly seven years with Anesthesia, a New York set drama focused on a series of interconnected characters leading up to a brutal crime of the narrative’s central figure. It’s sometimes easy to forget Nelson, perhaps best known as a character actor in an incalculable amount of arresting performances across a variety of films, is also an accomplished writer and director, premiering his own eclectic five features since his first (and best) 1997 debut Eye of God. Since then, he made a contemporized version of Shakespeare’s Othello in 2001 with O, an English language drama centered on a rebellious group of Sonderkomandos attempting to overthrow their Nazi captors in the grueling The Grey Zone (also 2001) and a comedy crime drama Leaves of Grass (2009) with Edward Norton pulling double duty as twins. »
