Clive Barker gave us his Top 10 horror films, and they are...

28 October 2015 12:01 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

As part of HitFix's recent Ultimate Horror Movie Poll, genre icon Clive Barker (whose own "Hellraiser" finished at No. 43 on the Top 100) gave us his personal picks for the 10 greatest horror films of all time -- all of which saw release before 1980. If you're looking for Halloween weekend viewing ideas -- and you're not afraid of subtitles and older movies -- this might be a good place to start.  After checking out Barker's full list below (not to mention his personal appreciation of "Bride of Frankenstein"), you can peruse over 100 individual Top 10 lists submitted by such names as Scott Derrickson, James Gunn, "Re-Animator" director Stuart Gordon and Cassandra Peterson (a.k.a. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark) by navigating here. 10. Eyes Without a Face (1960) 9. Suspiria (1977) 8. Orpheus (1950) 7. Onibaba (1964) 6. Freaks (1932) 5. The Exorcist (1973) 4. Dracula (1958) 3. Ultimate Horror Poll: All the honorable mentions that didn't make the cut

26 October 2015 12:11 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

In our ongoing recap of last week's Ultimate Horror Poll -- in which over 100 genre experts helped determine the 100 greatest horror movies of all time by voting for their personal "ten best" -- the time has come to take stock of every honorable mention and clarification given by the survey's participants that weren't included in the original piece. To be clear, voters weren't asked for honorable mentions specifically; but a handful felt strongly enough about their "bubbling under" choices to list them anyway (which proved extraordinarily useful in helping break ties on the Top 100). See below for a full listing, as well as explanations from Bloody-Disgusting founder/editor-in-chief Brad Miska and director Corin Hardy ("The Hallow") on why they voted the way they did. Honorable Mentions: Barbara Crampton (Actor, "Re-Animator") Dracula (1931) Jaws (1975) Nosferatu (1922) Poltergeist (1982) Vampyr (1932) Brad Miska (Founder/Editor-in-Chief, Bloody-Disgusting.com; Producer) -- See Full Explanations Below Beetlejuice (1988) Bill & Ted's »

The 100 Greatest Horror Films of All Time, Voted on by Over 100 Experts

21 October 2015 10:43 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

What scares the scare masters? And after nearly 100 years of horror films, what stand as the best horror films of all time, according to those who make them? After surveying more than a 100 luminaries from the horror world, the clear, unmistakable winner is...William Friedkin's 1973 masterpiece "The Exorcist." When we set out over a month ago to survey horror professionals about the greatest films of the genre, it seemed like an easy enough task: send out a few emails, make a few phone calls, and voila! A fun, endlessly-clickable Halloween feature to definitively determine the Top 100 horror movies of all time. The actual process of compiling it? Not so easy-peasy. The icons of the horror film are a shadowy lot and getting them to set in stone their all time top 10 of the genre took a fair amount of detective work, pleading and horror wrangling. But at the end of the lane, »

19 years ago today: Oprah Winfrey launched her book club

17 September 2015 8:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

On this day in 1996, Oprah Winfrey launched her book club and announced that “The Deep End of the Ocean” by Jacquelyn Mitchard would be her first selection. Oprah’s Book Club quickly became a hugely influential force in the publishing world. The popular daytime talk show host's stamp of approval on books often sent them to bestseller lists. Other notable Sept. 17 happenings in pop culture history: • 1957: Louis Armstrong canceled his trip to the U.S.S.R.. Announcing that he would not participate in a U.S. government-sponsored tour of the Soviet Union, the jazz musician said, “The way they are treating my people in the South, the government can go to hell.” • 1967: The Who ended a nationally televised performance of “My Generation” with a literal bang — an explosion, caused by explosives packed into Keith Moon’s drum kit, rocked the stage, singed Pete Townshend’s hair and »

Vampira And Me – The DVD Review

6 September 2015 8:01 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Review by Sam Moffitt

Being the first is not always a good thing. Many ground breaking artists who introduce something new into the cultural mix do not always fare well after they have changed the rules and the game. Take, just as one example, Orson Welles who changed forever how movies were made as well as radio drama and stage productions. Although Welles made out better than Maila Nurmi, also known as Vampira, the subject of the incredible and unforgettable documentary Vampira and Me.

H Greene first got to know Maila Nurmi when he interviewed her for a documentary called Schlock! The Secret History of Hollywood, (a good documentary in its own right.) Nurmi had grown distrustful of just about everyone, and with good reason. Yet for reasons Greene doesn’t even speculate on she trusted Greene and gave him almost two hours of interview time and discussed every last moment of her bizarre, »

Peaches Christ: A True Icon of Fright

5 May 2015 10:36 AM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Edgy, provocative, and often hilarious, the drag scene is one of the most fascinating forms of entertainment. We now live in a world of demanded political correctness, and while the drag scene has greatly evolved over the last few years, the taboo sensationalism of it all still rings true.  Thanks to the success of Logo’s RuPaul’s Drag Race, drag queens and drag culture have started to shift into the mainstream as something more than just Tootsie or The Rocky Horror Picture Show.  However, you don’t need to be on a reality show competition to make a name for yourself in the drag community, and horror fans are missing out on the scream queen we didn’t know we needed.

Peaches Christ (the stage name for Joshua Grannell) is a drag performer, emcee, filmmaker, and actor.  Peaches currently resides in San Francisco where her Backlash Production Company and »

Film Feature: The Top 10 Celebrity Photos of 2014, By Joe Arce

20 January 2015 1:41 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – In a year where shoots with perpetual photo fashionistas like Cindy Crawford and Sarah Jessica Parker still failed to crack the Top Ten list of biggest celebrity photo-ops, you know 2014 was a very good year for HollywoodChicago.com and myself, Joe Arce, as Senior Staff Photographer.

Narrowing down the 182 celebrity subjects that posed for my lens last year to a mere ten favorite portraits is not an easy task. Nonetheless, here are my Top Ten picks for biggest celebrity shoots of 2014. I based this on a combination of star power wattage of the subjects, the artistic results and the degree of difficulty in landing the quarry – for those iPhone carrying budding celebrity stalkers who may wish to play along at home.
