2011: A Year in Review Part I

30 December 2011 7:27 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

2011 was one of the best years for film in recent years.  There are about 25 films that could have made my top ten list and each film in my top 5 could be my number one.  I saw about 100 films this year and I still wish I could have seen more.  I feel very comfortable with my top ten and I feel like it was a good representative of the year in film.  However I do feel that people looking at this article should go over to Sound On Sight and see all the staff’s individual lists, as well as the honorable mentions that just missed my list.  You will find a great collection of films on those lists.

1. Martha Marcy May Marlene

Directed by Sean Durkin

I saw Sean Durkin’s directorial debut in August and knew as soon as the last frame came up that this was the best picture of the year. »

The Best Films of 2011

25 December 2011 11:56 AM, PST | blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news »

Making lists is not my favorite occupation. They inevitably inspire only reader complaints. Not once have I ever heard from a reader that my list was just fine, and they liked it. Yet an annual Best Ten list is apparently a statutory obligation for movie critics.

My best guess is that between six and ten of these movies won't be familiar. Those are the most useful titles for you, instead of an ordering of movies you already know all about.

One recent year I committed the outrage of listing 20 movies in alphabetical order. What an uproar! Here are my top 20 films, in order of approximate preference.

1. "A Separation"

This Iranian film won't open in Chicago until Jan. 27. It won the Golden Bear at Berlin and was just named the year's best foreign film by the New York Film Critics Circle. It is specifically Iranian, but I believe the more specific »

Game Change (2011) TV Movie Teaser Trailer: Ed Harris, Julianne Moore

Game Change Teaser Trailer. Jay Roach‘s Game Change (2011) TV Movie Teaser Trailer stars Ed Harris, Julianne MooreWoody Harrelson, Sarah Paulson, and Ron LivingstonGame Change‘s plot synopsis: “based on John Heilemann and Mark Halperin‘s bestselling chronicle of the 2008 presidential elections. Though the book covers both the Republican and Democrat sides of the race, Roach’s film narrows its focus to John McCain (Ed Harris), Sarah Palin (Julianne Moore), and their bid for office.”

I always thought Pailn’s nomination was a publicity, strategic decision. It seems I was correct.

Game Change also stars Peter MacNicol, Jamey Sheridan, Tiffany Thornton, Alex Hyde-White, Spencer Garrett, Bruce Altman, Larry Sullivan, Brian Howe, John Rothman, and Rain Pryor.

The Charles Manson Sing-a-long Award – John Hawkes in Martha Marcy May Marlene

A show stopping moment from one of my highlights of the cinematic year. Elizabeth Olsen was rightly lauded for her magnetic central performance in Sean Durkin’s film, but it was Sarah Paulson and John Hawkes who stood out for me. Teaser Trailer for Game Change Starring Ed Harris as John McCain and Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin

21 December 2011 4:24 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

HBO has released their first teaser trailer for Game Change, a telepic about John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign.  It is a well-structured 52 seconds.  First, Ed Harris looks just like McCain when you stick a hairpiece on him.  A speech by Woody Harrelson (playing McCain's advisor Steve Schmidt) builds nicely to the big reveal of Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin.  Plenty have tried on a Palin impression in the last couple years.  Is it any surprise that Moore's, in just one sentence, sounds good enough to sustain a feature-length character arc? Ron Livingston, Sarah Paulson, Peter MacNicol, Justin Gaston, Larry Sullivan, Jamey Sheridan, and Melissa Farman also star.  Game Change was directed by Jay Roach and written by Danny Strong, who previously collaborated on the HBO movie Recount, which centered on the 2000 election.  Game Change will premiere in March 2012.  Watch the trailer after the break. Below is the synopsis for Game Change »

Martha Marcy May Marlene Blu-ray Release Date and Details

20 December 2011 10:07 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Director Sean Durkin's Martha Marcy May Marlene was a darling to critics in 2011 and launched the career of Elizabeth Olsen, younger sister to the famous Olsen twins. It earned Durkin a Best Director award at Sundance and Olsen a Best Female Lead Independent Spirit Award nomination.

Fox will be bringing Martha Marcy May Marlene (say that 10 times fast) to Blu-ray and DVD on February 21. The release timing comes just ahead of the Academy Awards, which I assure you is no coincidence.

The film, which co-stars John Hawkes and Sarah Paulson, will be presented in Blu-ray in 2.4:1 1080p video and 5.1 DTS-hd Master Audio. This career-launching type of film is one you want to see an ample supply of supplements attached to, and Fox is ready to deliver.

Tom Cruise/Mission: Impossible 4 Outstanding Average, Robert Pattinson/Kristen Stewart/Breaking Dawn Modest Drop

Guy Ritchie/Robert Downey Jr/Jude Law/Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows Underwhelms: Box Office

The silver lining at the North American box office this weekend is the Brad Bird/Tom Cruise $140 million-budgeted combo Mission: Impossible IV – Ghost Protocol, which has raked in an impressive, IMAX-boosted $4.6 million — including $1m from Thursday midnight showings — at only 425 locations (300 of which IMAX theaters). As per The Hollywood Reporter, Ghost Protocol should bring in $12 million by Sunday evening. If so, that would represent an outstanding, even considering the IMAX surcharges, $28,400 per-theater average.

For comparison's sake, Mission: Impossible III earned $47.74 million at 4,054 theaters in July 2006 (approx. $58 million today), averaging $11,776 per site (approx. $14,000 today). At a little more than one tenth of the number of theaters, Ghost Protocol is expected to take in more than one fifth of the inflation-adjusted gross of its predecessor. »

We're just a few days away from the season finale of "American Horror Story" on FX, and while we wonder what the heck series creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have planned for us, here are a few slightly spoilerish stills from Episode 1.12, "Afterbirth". "American Horror Story" Recap 1.11: Bouncing Baby Bloodbath

15 December 2011 4:56 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

It's all been leading up to this, folks - in an episode likely to go down in television history for sheer effed-uppedness (I'm sure there's an Emmy category for that, right?), American Horror Story laid it all out on the living room table last night in an episode simply titled "Birth" ("Afterbirth" comes next week).

Are we ready to see the edgiest show on basic cable put its blood money where its mouth is?

1984

Constance (Jessica Lange) is passed out in front of a fresh game of solitaire And an episode of Newhart. (Atta girl!) It must have been an episode that Julia Duffy wasn't in - those were real snoozers!

A blonde kid with a metal toy truck bangs around her pickled, prostrate form - the basement door opens on its own, and he goes down, truck-first. His toy rolls into the darkness. Wait, is this Tate? I guess it would be. »
