Blu-ray Reviews: Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III Collector’s Editions

16 February 2017 9:56 AM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

There was never really a need to sequelize 1982’s Poltergeist. It told a complete story. It vanquished the evil spirit haunting the house by film’s end. Heck, it even vanquished the house itself. But because the original movie was a hit and it was the ’80s, the Tobe Hooper/Steven Spielberg collaboration got not just one sequel but two, despite the fact that it does not lend itself to being a franchise. New villains and new mythology—and eventually even new family members—were introduced to keep the story going, albeit with mixed results. And while the sequels have their fans, they’re hardly among the most beloved horror films of the decade. Thanks to Scream Factory’s new Collector's Editions of both, horror fans now have the chance to reevaluate them in the best possible format.

Gold Review

28 January 2017 9:44 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Loosely inspired by the story of David Walsh and the Bre-x Minerals mining scandal in the 1990’s, Gold is director Stephen Gaghan’s first wide release directorial effort since Syriana over a decade ago. Unlike that film though, Gaghan didn’t handle writing duties here, and quality may have suffered because of it.

Scripted intricacies in Gold are not nearly as incisive and sophisticated as previous Gaghan efforts like Syriana or his Oscar-winning screenplay for Traffic. Instead, writers Patrick Massett and John Zinman constantly rely on fortune cookie-style dialogue to hammer home messages that never reach the profoundness they so desire. It’s still a fascinating story, with a topsy-turvy third act that’s fairly engaging finale if you weren’t already familiar with the real life scandal, but what really saves this film from mediocrity starts and ends with Matthew McConaughey.

Box Office: James McAvoy’s ‘Split’ Muzzling ‘A Dog’s Purpose,’ ‘Resident Evil’

27 January 2017 2:00 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

James McAvoy’s horror-thriller “Split” is showing plenty of staying power, heading for its second consecutive victory at the North American box office with about $19 million at 3,199 sites, early estimates showed Friday.

The opening of controversial family drama “A Dog’s Purpose” appeared to be performing at the lower end of expectations in second — with about $18 million at 3,058 sites — following a boycott launched by PETA over a leaked video showing a German Shepherd struggling during production. The filmmakers have insisted that PETA and TMZ have mischaracterized what took place.

PETA’s PR attack appears to have had a moderate toll, given that forecasts before the boycott was launched were as high as $25 million. “Split” should dominate moviegoing on Friday with $7 million while “A Dog’s Purpose” puts its paws on about $5 million.

Film Review: Matthew McConaughey is All That Glitters in ‘Gold’

27 January 2017 9:24 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The relish that Matthew McConaughey displays in creating his latest character in “Gold,” a Willy Loman-type mining exec who is looking for his biggest score, is most of the reason to experience the film. However, there isn’t exactly a motherlode when it comes to the story.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

In a sort-of “Treasure of Sierra Madre” meets “Wall Street,” the scenario of “Gold” is an insider’s (and based on a true) tale of a large gold strike in Indonesia, which mostly benefits the financiers far away in New York City. McConaughey’s character is like the go-between, as he fights for his (and his partner’s) well-earned prospecting rights to the mine. And like his physical transformation in “Dallas Buyers Club,” McConaughey alters his look – this time into an overweight and balding hustler. He carries the film on his back like an overworked mule, but like that animal can »

Box Office: ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ Licked by ‘Resident Evil’ on Thursday

27 January 2017 7:33 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Screen Gems’ “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” opened with a solid $1 million at 2,464 North America locations in Thursday night previews.

That was more than double the take for Universal’s controversial family drama “A Dog's Purpose,” which launched with a moderate $455,000 in 2,255 domestic sites.

Resident Evil: Final Chapter” is projected to finish the weekend with about $13 million to $14 million at 3,104 sites. The film — which has a $40 million price tag — marks the sixth and final installment in the franchise adaptation of Capcom’s video game series.

Milla Jovovich — who has been in all six movies — portrays the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead. Ali Larter, Shawn Roberts, Iain Glen (“Game of Thrones”), Ruby Rose, Eoin Macken, South Korean actor Lee Joon-Gi and Fraser James also star with  Paul W.S. Anderson returning to direct.

Gold – Review

26 January 2017 6:15 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Inspired by a true story, the disappointing Gold stars Mathew McConaughey as Kenny Wells, who in the late 1980’s inherited the Washoe Mining Company in Reno, Nevada from his father (Craig T. Nelson). He’s such a failure that he’s soon running it from the back of the restaurant where his devoted girlfriend Kaylene (Bryce Dallas Howard) waits tables. But Kenny’s fortunes appear to change when he teams up with experienced geologist, Michael Acosta (Édgar Ramírez). The pair head to the jungles of Indonesia where, under the watchful eye of the Suharto regime, and after Kenny almost dies from malaria, the pair announce a major gold strike, the “largest of the decade”. Washoe’s stock soars as everybody vies for a piece of the action.

The elements are there for a good story with Gold, but they don’t fit together well thanks to an underwritten script and »

Box Office: Can ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ Still Win the Weekend After Canine Controversy?

24 January 2017 3:56 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Universal-Amblin’s “A Dog's Purpose” faces serious challenges this weekend in the face of a week-old call for a boycott of the canine feel-good film, which opens at about 3,050 North American locations.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has blistered everyone involved with the movie in the wake of the Jan. 18 release of a leaked video showing a German Shepherd named Hercules balking at performing a stunt in churning water. Producer Gavin Polone, director Lasse Hallstrom, co-screenwriter W. Bruce Cameron and animal trainers from Birds and Animals Unlimited have said TMZ and PETA mischaracterized what actually took place — insisting that Hercules was reluctant to go into water only because he had not rehearsed at the specific  location. Polone also alleged that PETA had edited the video in a misleading way.

An online petition launched on Jan. 20 also called for a boycott unless the filmmakers donated a “significant »
