Blu-ray Review: Cherry Falls

21 June 2016 8:52 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Coming on the heels of the post-Scream slasher movie renaissance, director Geoffrey Wright’s 2000 effort Cherry Falls had a difficult journey to find an audience. Rejected for an R rating by the MPAA despite several rounds of cuts, the movie was unable to secure theatrical distribution and wound up premiering in an even more truncated form in the States on the USA Network in 2000 (it received a theatrical release overseas). Over the course of the next 15 years, though, the movie developed a well-deserved cult audience who recognized it for being one of the better slashers to come out of that second wave.

Someone is killing teenagers in Cherry Falls, Virginia. Sheriff Brent Marken (Michael Biehn) is desperate to catch the killer and protect his teenage daughter Jody (Brittany Murphy). She’s just broken up with her boyfriend (Gabriel Mann) and is feeling particularly vulnerable—even more so when she »

Let Her Be Horny: Talking Cinema with Amy Heckerling

13 May 2016 1:02 PM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Amy HeckerlingThe films of Amy Heckerling reveal a heart guarded and tender, a penchant for the past without a whiff of the maudlin. Who could forget her debut, Fast Times at Ridgemont High? Directed from Cameron Crowe's script, the 1982 film gave us frank portrayals of sexuality and the detailed minutiae of growing up, suspended in the hazy tedium of high school, all without condescension or patronizing. Totally righteous. Heckerling proved attuned to the particulars of comedy with her next feature Johnny Dangerously (1984), a waggish send-up of the 1930s gangster comedy. In its cheeky beginning, a 1935 title card reveals itself to be a real material object that crumbles when car crash obliterates its façade. With a darkened lash line, a young Michael Keaton puts forth his best James Cagney as the titular mobster whose identity and status are known to all but his ailing ma and brother, a rising assistant Da. »

Brittany Murphy's Death May Be Reinvestigated as a Murder

25 March 2016 4:08 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It's been more than six years since actress Brittany Murphy suddenly passed away at the age of 32, and there are still numerous questions swirling about her death. At the time, the actress' untimely demise was ruled as "accidental," attributed to the combination of pneumonia, anemia and multiple-drug intoxication. Earlier today, E! Online published the results of their own investigation into the actress' death, which speculate that it may have been a homicide. Us Weekly spoke with L.A. County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter, who confirms that it is possible the actress' case may be reopened as a homicide, but there are no plans to do so right now.

"If the police wanted to conduct an investigation or if somebody came to us and said, 'This is the following circumstances, did you guys find this or this?' then we would contact the law enforcement agency also and say, 'The »

Going against Randy Meeks’ rules for surviving a horror film, the killer in Cherry Falls (2000) seems to only target virgins. Ahead of its March 29th Blu-ray release from Scream Factory, Cherry Falls is teased in high-definition clips and a trailer.

From Shout! Factory: “A serial killer is stalking the peaceful town of Cherry Falls. At first, it seems that he is just targeting teenagers, but after the third killing it becomes clear that all the victims have been virgins. When the town’s students hear about this, they realize that there is only one way to protect themselves and begin planning a “Pop Your Cherry” party where they will all lose their virginities together. Meanwhile, Jodi (Brittany Murphy, Clueless, Sin City), the virtuous daughter of the town’s sheriff (Michael Biehn, Aliens, Grindhouse), decides to take matters into her own hands and trap the killer herself.

More than six years after the death of actress Brittany Murphy, unanswered questions—many stemming from new information uncovered in an E! News investigation—remain about the circumstances surrounding her "accidental death" of natural causes at age 32. Amid renewed interest in the Murphy case, E! News has learned exclusively what the L.A. County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter says would be needed to reopen the death investigation. While Winter does not rule out taking a closer look at their initial findings (death due to pneumonia, anemia and an accidental mix of prescription and over-the-counter pills), he explains, "We would have to have direct evidence. E! Investigates: 5 Reasons Brittany Murphy's Death Is Still a Mystery

24 March 2016 4:00 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Much like the O.J. Simpson double-murder trial that recently came back into the news, Brittany Murphy's "accidental death" in December 2009 at age 32 is a Hollywood story that continues to confound. In this age of snaps, tweets and instas, celeb news comes in and out of our feeds faster than a swipe right. So it speaks volumes when a Hollywood tragedy sticks in our Add-addled minds more than six years after the fact. And in that sense, Murphy's death is among the stickiest, chiefly because many believe that far more questions than answers linger. One outspoken skeptic is respected forensic pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht, who, after reviewing the Murphy case, tells E! News, "I had questions »
