SAG-aftra Election Ending Bitterly With 2000 Strike Still in Dispute

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Voting is ending for a particularly acrimonious SAG-aftra presidential election with results due to be announced as early as Thursday afternoon.

The counting of the ballots, with about a quarter of the 144,000 dues-current members expected to vote, will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The contest has featured accusations of election fraud and bungling the recent contract negotiations (made by Esai Morales and Membership First); negligence on safety issues and allowing massive staff salaries (made by independent stuntman Pete Antico); and Membership First’s alleged incompetence in the 2008 negotiations and its long opposition to the SAG-aftra merger (made by the Unite for Strength faction headed by current president Gabrielle Carteris).

The divisions within SAG-aftra run deep and have existed for the past two decades. Remarkably, the two main factions — the moderate-leaning Unite for Strength and the self-styled progressives of Membership First — have managed to revive the debate over the six-month commercials strike in 2000. SAG-aftra President Gabrielle Carteris Repudiates Election Fraud Claim

19 August 2017 11:28 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With the SAG-aftra election coming to a close, SAG-aftra president Gabrielle Carteris has denied an assertion of election fraud by her opponents.

The controversy has arisen in the wake of a recent campaign claim by Carteris and her allies that presidential candidate Esai Morales had been negligent in his role as first VP of the union’s Los Angeles locale by not attending 33 of 35 board meetings. Morales’ Membership First faction hit back on Aug. 16 by alleging that Carteris had been duplicitous in her behavior by resigning her local seat two years ago — and threatened to make a formal complaint to the U.S. Department of Labor if she does so again.

Both Morales and Carteris, who leads the Unite For Strength slate, are running for national and local offices at the same time. She told Variety that the Membership claim of “election fraud” is not valid.

17 August 2017 6:34 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With a week to go in a heated SAG-aftra election, Esai Morales has warned that his faction may file a federal election fraud complaint against union president Gabrielle Carteris.

Morales is running for president as head of the Membership First faction, which issued a statement Thursday a few days after accusations by Carteris and her allies that Morales has been negligent in his role as first VP of the union’s Los Angeles local by not attending 33 of 35 board meetings. The faction responded by alleging that Carteris has been duplicitous in her behavior by resigning her local seat two years ago — and threatened to make a formal complaint to the U.S. Department of Labor if she does so again.

“Unite For Strength is challenging Esai’s attendance record,” Membership First said in a statement. “Both Esai and Gabrielle ran in 2015 for the Los Angeles local board. Both won seats. Esai »

SAG-aftra Presidential Candidate Pete Antico Blasts Union Leaders Following ‘Deadpool 2’ Stunt Death

15 August 2017 6:14 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

SAG-aftra presidential candidate and veteran stuntman Pete Antico has blasted union leadership for failure to provide protection to the stunt community.

Antico issued a blistering statement to Variety on Tuesday, a day after the death of stuntwoman Joi “Sj” Harris on the set of “Deadpool 2” and a month after John Bernecker’s death on “The Walking Dead” set. Antico said both deaths are tragic.

“The stunt coordinators on those sets have vast experience tenure and are at the top of their game,” he said. “We have not received much information regarding the details of the incidents; however, I do know that the stunt community is not protected in our collective bargaining agreement and has not been for years. There are no qualifications for a stunt coordinator in our collective bargaining agreement. There never was. That is unconscionable. SAG-AFTRA Presidential Election Heats Up in the Home Stretch

14 August 2017 6:26 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With 10 days left for members to vote, SAG-aftra’s national election is seeing plenty of attacks as the union’s two major factions denounce each other in a bid to sway the 144,000 performer members.

The minority Membership First group, headed by Esai Morales, has accused the dominant Unite for Strength of bungling the recent negotiations for a new contract, which was ratified by membership on Aug. 7 by a 76-24 margin. The union’s negotiating committee was led by president Gabrielle Carteris, who’s seeking re-election.

“There are over 450 scripted television programs — yet it’s harder than ever for working actors to make a living or get pension and health credits … Because the contracts haven’t kept up with the marketplace,” Membership First said. “We do not support the new travel provisions. It’s a huge give-away that obliterates decades long negotiated travel provisions that benefited performers.”

SAG-AFTRA Members Ratify New Film-TV Contract

7 August 2017 7:29 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

SAG-AFTRA members have ratified the successor deal for a new three-year master contract for primetime TV and feature films.

The pact generated opposition from about one in every four members who voted. About 76% of members approved the deal with about 15% of the 144,000 eligible members voting — or about 22,000 in all.

The ratification vote was triggered on July 15 when 77.4% of the union’s national board approved the new pact. Negotiators for SAG-aftra reached a tentative deal at 6 a.m. on July 4 with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, following three separate 24-hour contract extensions.

The union has touted “significant” improvements in the residuals rate paid to performers for exhibition of their performances on streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon. Under the new terms, actors will receive residuals for exhibition on subscription video on-demand platforms earlier, now after 90 days instead of after one year.

Additionally, the new formula contains a 300% increase in residuals within the first two years »

Robert B. Martin Jr. Plans Unconventional SAG-AFTRA Presidency Campaign

3 August 2017 7:04 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Robert B. Martin, Jr., is running for the SAG-aftra presidency in an unusual campaign — no endorsements, no fundraising, no attacks on other candidates, and no position on the contract ratification.

His most notable roles were as the first teenager to be “call blocked” in a national ad campaign and as Billy Hillbilly in 1999’s “Mystery Men.” He’s starred in hundreds of commercials and was the spokesperson for Pace Picante Sauce, Taco Bell, Blockbuster, Jiffy Lube, Snapple, Coke, Diet Coke, and Geico.

“The office of SAG President is not a vanity position or about how many celebrity endorsements you have,” said Martin. “The office of the president is and should always be about having the experience and expertise in negotiating and most importantly, executing our contracts in the best interest of the membership.”

SAG-aftra Presidential Election Heats Up as Candidates Launch Attacks

1 August 2017 12:29 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

SAG-aftra’s election has gone into the hot zone with adversaries denouncing each other in a bid to sway the 144,000 performer members.

The key race is for the presidency, with incumbent Gabrielle Carteris heading the Unite for Strength slate and facing a challenge from Esai Morales as head of the Membership First faction along with independents Pete Antico, Robert Martin Jr., and Marilyn Monrovia.

Carteris is pushing for members to ratify the union’s new three-year tentative deal with production companies covering film and primetime TV work. Morales and Antico are campaigning against ratification, saying the contract falls particularly short in travel provisions, basic cable, and residuals.

Ballots on ratification are due on Aug. 7 while the elections ballots are due Aug. 24.

“Our current leadership tells you that everything is great,” the Membership First site reads. “You know better. So do we. We tell you the truth.”

SAG-aftra Election Ballots Go Out Against Backdrop of Contract Ratification

26 July 2017 5:18 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

About 144,000 SAG-aftra election ballots have started hitting performers’ mailboxes this week — only one week after union members were asked to ratify a three-year successor deal to the master contract.

As a result, the question of whether to ratify the contract is the key issue among presidential candidates. Current SAG-aftra president Gabrielle Carteris, who heads the moderate Unite for Strength faction, has strongly endorsed the deal while Esai Morales and stuntman Peter Antico are pushing for a “No” vote.

The union reached a deal with Hollywood producers on July 4. The new deal, if ratified, provides for $256 million in increased pay over the three years with minimums increasing by 2.5% in the first year, 3% in the second year, and 3% in the third year. Employers will also provide a 0.5% hike in contributions paid to the SAG pension plan and AFTRA retirement fund in the first year of the agreement along with “significant” improvements in the residuals rate paid by streaming platforms »
