Blu-ray Release Date: Sept. 9, 2014

Price: Blu-ray $29.95

Lou Diamond Phillips is Ritchie Valens in La Bamba

The 1987 music-filled biographical drama La Bamba tells the brief, ultimately tragic, but uplifting story of pioneering rock star Ritchie Valens, born Ricardo Valenzuela in Southern California’s San Fernando Valley.

Portrayed in the movie by Lou Diamond Phillips, Valens would have three hit songs before dying at the shockingly young age of 17 in the infamous plane crash that also killed Buddy Holly and J.P. (The Big Bopper) Richardson. Valens’ short life—particularly with family and friends in a vibrant Mexican-American community—and obsessive love of music are the focus in La Bamba, directed with warmth by Luis Valdez (Zoot Suit). Valens’ music is performed with crackling energy by the sensational Los Lobos.

Twilight Time’s edition of the film, its Blu-ray debut, contains the following features:

HBO has delivered some terrific comedies over the years, from the quirky musical series Flight of the Conchords to biting political satire Veep, and with the cast that the premium cable network is pulling together for its upcoming comedy The Brink, there’s reason to believe HBO has another major hit on its hands.

Now, our anticipation has been raised with news that Watchmen actress Carla Gugino has joined the cast in a multi-episode arc. Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption), Jack Black (School of Rock) and Pablo Schreiber (Orange Is The New Black) all topline The Brink, which is described as “an epic dark comedy.”

This Just In: Hollywood Is Still Very White

6 August 2014 3:41 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

A new study has revealed that little has changed in Tinseltown in terms of offering up more diverse casting choices. Despite the fact that Hispanics make up a huge amount of the paying public, and have shown strong enthusiasm towards spending their money supporting whatever blockbusters are released, Hispanics only accounted for 4.9% of the speaking roles in last year's top 100 films. That figure is identical to what it was back in 2008- despite a strong surge in the Latino population here in the states.

Even when they do get roles, the women in particular are marginalized as eye candy. The study shows that Latinas are the highest-represented ethnicity when it comes to roles that feature some form of nudity.

"Part of the problem is conditioning. When you hear the names De Niro or Pacino, you automatically know it's an American movie," says actor Esai Morales. "But the minute you have »

Watch: Trailer For 'Jarhead 2: Field Of Fire' Which Actually Exists

1 August 2014 10:02 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Somewhere in the executive offices over at Universal, someone said something along these lines: "You know what property we really need to maximize? 'Jarhead.' " And so they did just that, deciding to make a follow-up to the 2005 movie, that isn't a sequel, so much as a movie "inspired" by the Sam Mendes film. And though this trailer dropped a while ago, it's just caught our attention now and we can't be the only ones to bear witness to this. Directed by Don Michael Paul ("Sniper: Legacy," "Lake Placid: The Final Chapter") and starring Josh Kelly, Cole Hauser, Bookeem Woodbine, Esai Morales, Stephen Lang and a bunch of other people, this one combines cheap locations and alt-rawk rhythmz for one testosterone-fueled experience. Here's the synopsis: Battle-scarred and disillusioned by the war, Corporal Chris Merriman is put in charge of a unit whose next mission is to resupply a remote outpost on the edge of. »

SAG-aftra’s David White Blasted Over Mulling NBA Players Assn. Slot (Exclusive)

The Membership First faction of SAG-AFTRA has blasted national exec director David White over considering leaving the performers union for a similar post with the National Basketball Players Assn.

Membership First issued the statement Monday, three days after White’s name emerged as a candidate to serve as exec director of Nbpa and two days after White told the national board that no final decision has been made.

Membership First took White to task for being involved with the Nbpa at the same time that SAG-AFTRA is preparing to negotiate a successor deal to its current contract with production companies, which expires June 30. The faction — which describes itself as progressive — has seen its power erode since 2009 when White’s predecessor was ousted by the national board and again in 2012, when SAG members voted to merge with AFTRA over Membership First’s opposition.

During its 200th episode on Wednesday (Feb. 5), "Criminal Minds" finally shed some light on just what Jj (A.J. Cook) was up to during her time away from the Bau with the State Department.

Responding to the profiler's kidnapping at the end of the last episode, the team jumped into action, learning that her disappearance was related to her secret mission while she was away. Turns out Jj was on assignment in Afghanistan to find Osama bin Laden, which is where she met Cruz (Esai Morales).

The show spent some time trying to convince us that Cruz was the mole in Jj's Afghani team, informing us that he never put his name in for Section Chief, but in the end, that wasn't the case. Askari (Faran Tahir), the team's translator, is revealed early on as the person torturing both Jj and Cruz, but eventually Hastings (Tahmoh Penikett), the team's fourth member, »
