Plumbing New Depths in Low Brow

Tom Jolliffe takes a look at an increasing trend in witless low brow comedies on the big screen…

It goes without saying that low brow comedy is nothing new. Foul mouthed tirades, sex jokes and toilet humour. Occasionally these comedies might play with stereotypes relating to race, gender or sexuality. Of course attitudes have changed and. largely, comedies these days have grown up with society. This is not to say that low brow comedy can’t be funny but the trouble arises when you set your stall out as such, but forget some key things (like engaging characters, funny lines) and this is what we’re increasingly finding in all too many modern comedies.

You can have filth. You can have unlikeable leads, complete bastards. You can do something like It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Everything about the show is pushing to a point but not overstepping and mixing

Christmas Story 2 Vs. Jingle All the Way 2: Which Is Worse?

Christmas Story 2 Vs. Jingle All the Way 2: Which Is Worse?
It's time to light a fire, get some eggnog, and settle in for some Christmas classics. And we know which ones are at the top of the list. A Christmas Story, Jingle All the Way, Christmas Vacation, Elf, and Bad Santa are certainly favorites. But a little unknown fact is that all of these movies have gotten sequels. You might not realize that because they are all equally terrible.

So which movie has the absolute worst Christmas sequel? Well, we can scratch Friday After Next off the list, because the original was never a Christmas movie to begin with. But at the top of the list surely has to be A Christmas Story 2. While the original is so popular that it plays for 24 hours straight on Christmas day, the only place you're likely to see the sequel is playing on a loop in Hell. Sure, it has some fans, but

For The Postseason: Joe E. Brown As Alibi Ike

If you’re a baseball fan, particularly if you’re a Dodgers, Astros, Cubs or Yankees fan, the real baseball season started this past Friday with the inauguration of the American and National League Championship Series. I’m a Dodgers fan, which means I’m among that group who, arguably, have gone the longest without the satisfaction/excitement/nail-biting terror of seeing their team in the World Series, the next step for whoever wins in the Nlcs. The Dodgers last appeared in the World Series in 1988, capping a memorable run with a championship by beating the Oakland A’s. That was 29 years ago. The Cubs are the reigning Mlb champions, having won last year’s World Series after a 107-year drought. And the Yankees, a mainstay of the World Series around the turn of this century, last appeared in an October championship series in 2009.

The only team to come close

10 Actors to Watch: Daniel Kaluuya Goes From ‘Get Out’ to ‘Black Panther’

10 Actors to Watch: Daniel Kaluuya Goes From ‘Get Out’ to ‘Black Panther’
Daniel Kaluuya is one of Variety‘s 10 Actors to Watch for 2017. For the full list, click here.

British actor Kaluuya says he knew almost instantly after reading “Get Out” that Jordan Peele’s social commentary masked as a horror film would “shake things up.”

“In the original ending, basically he kills everybody,” Kaluuya says of his lead character, Chris, whose girlfriend (Allison Williams) has ulterior motives when she takes him to meet her family. “I knew then that this is going to be a thing.”

Kaluuya, whose credits also include TV’s “Black Mirror” and “Skins,” says he knew Peele’s work with Keegan-Michael Key in Comedy Central’s “Key & Peele” and that he has a habit of creating works that “really resonate with the public consciousness.” He remembers returning to London after “Get Out” was released and walking down Warren Street while on the phone when a black woman suddenly “looked at me, hugged

Charlie's Angels Reboot Eyes Kristen Stewart and Lupita Nyong'o

Charlie's Angels Reboot Eyes Kristen Stewart and Lupita Nyong'o
With Sony finally moving forward with their Charlie's Angels reboot, after languishing in development for a few years, a new report claims that stars Kristen Stewart and Lupita Nyong'o are being eyed to play two of the three Angels in this reboot. We reported in May that actress Janelle Monae was at the top of the studio's "wish list" to play one of the Angels, but the actress isn't mentioned in this latest report, so it's possible that she's not in contention for the role anymore. Regardless, with casting starting to heat up, production could begin sooner rather than later.

Variety broke this news today, revealing that the studio is interested in several other "big names" for the reboot, although no specific actors were mentioned. Director Elizabeth Banks came aboard just over two years ago, but our report from May revealed that the script was undergoing a rewrite from Narcos

Def Comedy Jam 25 focuses on camaraderie and family over laughs

Even though Def Comedy Jam is responsible for launching the careers of some of the biggest names in comedy, it hardly ever gets the respect it deserves. Even though it’s a common link between people like Dave Chappelle, Martin Lawrence, Bernie Mac and Kevin Hart, the comedy world doesn’t give it the same adoration as…

Dave Chappelle, Sheryl Underwood and More Bring the Laughs on ‘Def Comedy Jam 25’ Anniversary Special

Dave Chappelle, Sheryl Underwood and More Bring the Laughs on ‘Def Comedy Jam 25’ Anniversary Special
“All comedy roads today, lead to Def Comedy Jam.”

Dave Chappelle, Steve Harvey, Martin Lawrence, D.L. Hughley and more of comedy’s heavy hitters reunited for a special night of laughs for Def Comedy Jam 25, a new special which began streaming on Netflix on Tuesday.

The comedy celebration was filmed at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, on Sept. 9, and pays tribute to the comedians behind a show “responsible for more stolen cable than any other television,” as Chappelle joked.

Chappelle, Harvey, Sheryl Underwood and Cedric the Entertainer kick off the 80-minute special playing as a comedy collision of self-deprecation and social topics like racism and police brutality, a sprinkle of politics (President Donald Trump comes up more than once) and tons of laughs, with appearances from Tracy Morgan, Katt Williams, Craig Robinson, Bill Bellamy, Mike Epps, Tiffany Haddish and many more.

Def Comedy Jam at 25: Dave Chappelle, Sheryl Underwood, D.L. Hughley Get Political

Def Comedy Jam at 25: Dave Chappelle, Sheryl Underwood, D.L. Hughley Get Political
Some of the most iconic moments from HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam” were about relationships, sex, and culture. But the comics who appeared on Russell Simmons and Bob Sumner’s stand-up show didn’t shy away from the current events of the time, either – everything from O.J. Simpson’s freeway chase to the beating of Rodney King and subsequent L.A. riots were fair game. So it’s no surprise that reuniting some of the best from the show’s original run for Netflix’s 25th anniversary special would come with ample commentary on the politics of today.

The “Def Comedy Jam 25” special, which was taped on Sept. 10 in Los Angeles, mixed live performances from Def Jam legends like Cedric the Entertainer, Adele Givens, Eddie Griffin, Tracy Morgan and Mike Epps with pre-taped messages from stars like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart as well as footage from classic sets.

'Logan Lucky': The Six Things You Need to Make a Perfect Heist Film
Head to the movies this weekend to see Logan Lucky, and you'll see more than Steven Soderbergh ending his moviemaking retirement phase and returning to the big screen. (You've been greatly missed, sir.) You'll see more than just Channing Tatum and Adam Driver playing down-on-their-luck Southern brothers who hatch a plan to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway. You'll even see more than Daniel Craig sporting a bottle-blond crop-cut hairdo and Seth MacFarlane sporting something on his head that looks like a cross between a mullet, a Jheri curl and roadkill.

The 20 Best-Directed TV Comedy Shows of the 21st Century, Ranked
While dramatic television has seen a wave of directorial ingenuity over the last 17 years (see our list of the best-directed dramas for proof), 21st century TV will probably be remembered more for the growth of vision in the comedy genre. What was once a format dominated by multi-cam sitcoms with live studio audiences has become the most auteur-driven genre on television, and the results have been some of the most creative and personal series the small screen has ever aired.

The Best TV Characters of the 2000s, Ranked

The Best TV Characters of the 2000s, Ranked
Ah, the 2000s — an indefinable decade of war, social progression, and an explosion of prestige TV. With so much great television came many, many great television characters. The best shows were built on battles of quality characters: Is Don Draper better than Peggy Olson? Lorelai Gilmore or Rory? Walter White or Jesse Pinkman? Or is there a third, less-referenced character who’s the secret star?

These aren’t problems by any stretch of the imagination: Great characters lead to better episodes, seasons, and series, so having too many is hardly a handicap in a medium with so much time. But before standalone episodes started trending, these were the best characters during the onset of TV’s new golden age.

A few rules, to keep things sane: Characters had to be created between 2000 and 2009. So even if the show was created before we knew Y2K wasn’t worth the worry,

Good morning Angels! Sony announce remake of Charlie’s Angels, Elizabeth Banks directing

Author: Scott Davis

You could say that this was an inevitability given the amount of remakes, reboots and reimaginings that have graced the big-screen over the last decade or so. Indeed with more and more television adaptations working with cinema audiences, it’s no real surprise to hear that cult television series Charlie’s Angels is getting a second outing (via THR / The Tracking Board).

Sony has announced that a new version of the show is set for a reboot after the project had originally had two big-screen versions in 2000 and 2003 respectively. With the likes of Baywatch (read our review here), 21/22 Jump Street, CHiPS and others taking to the big-screen with mixed results (Baywatch opens in the Us tomorrow), it’s now seemingly the time to revisit the series.

Already attached to direct the film is Elizabeth Banks, who made her directorial debut on 2015’s Pitch Perfect 2 with Angels marking her sophomore effort.

Janelle Monae to Lead Charlie's Angels Reboot in 2019?

Janelle Monae to Lead Charlie's Angels Reboot in 2019?
Nearly two years after Elizabeth Banks was first sought to direct Sony's Charlie's Angels remake, the project is finally moving forward with new writers. The studio has brought on Narcos creators Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro to rewrite the script, which was first worked on by Evan Spiliotopoulos (Beauty and the Beast). While no cast members are in place yet, this report claims that Janelle Monae (Hidden Figures, Moonlight) is at the top of the studio's "wish list" for one of the Angels.

The Tracking Board reports that Sony wants at least one of the Angels to be black, and while Janelle Monae is at the top of the studio's list, casting hasn't even started yet since the script isn't finished. This report also claims that Sony will hand out a "prime 2019 release date" very soon for Charlie's Angels, although there is no indication as to what this date may be.

Hollywood and Las Vegas: The Perfect Movie Relationship

There’s not many places on Earth more bright, glitzy and glamorous than Las Vegas. With its famous shows, many casinos and constant parties, it’s no surprise that the city in the desert is popular with Hollywood and the film industry. Situated just 263 miles east of Los Angeles and the film community, Vegas has attracted the attention of movie producers for decades.

Founded in 1905, not too long after the birth of the movie industry itself, the City Of Las Vegas first appeared in a motion picture in 1952. The film was The Las Vegas Story, a Howard Hughes production starring Jane Russell and Victor Mature that was a suspenseful thriller involving murder and intrigue. It was quickly followed by the likes of Crashing Las Vegas and Meet Me In Las Vegas a few years later, but it was the arrival of the 1960 Rat Pack film Ocean’s 11 which really united
