One on One: Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “Love & Basketball” and “Beyond the Lights”

23 March 2015 5:33 PM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Beyond the Lights“Cupid draw back your bow…And let your arrow go…Straight to my lover’s heart…for me…nobody but me…”Love is easily definable when refracted through the lens of Hollywood cinema or a great pop song like Sam Cooke’s “Cupid.” A couple meet-cute, their attraction grows, heartache eventually rears its ugly head, then epiphany strikes and one person does everything they can to get the other back. It’s a rigged game of sorts; togetherness is almost always guaranteed once things fades to black. The studios are so good at reducing complex emotional experiences into easily digestible packages that one tends to forget the messiness of romance, the time it takes to develop, and the confusion it brings to a person’s life. “Happily ever after” tends to earn more at the box office than “it’s complicated.”Instead of reinforcing this mainstream narrative, »

What's New on TV, Netflix Streaming, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: February 2 - February 8

2 February 2015 6:00 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.

New on DVD and Blu-ray

"The Best of Me"

This might not be the best of Nicholas Sparks's oeuvre of weepy romantic dramas, but at least it's not the most insane! (That honor probably goes to "Safe Haven," for the record.) In any case, this story about true love lost and found stars Cyclops from "X-Men" and Michelle Monaghan. If you love Nicholas Sparks, you love him, and nothing anyone else says will change that. Which is sort of admirable, really. Extend your love Sparks with this exclusive featurette.

"Dear White People"

This indie from writer/director Justin Simien is a comedy about race politics on an Ivy League campus. It is funny and smart, and you should see it. Tessa Thompson leads a great ensemble »

Alien franchise: ranking the movies in order of quality

22 January 2015 7:45 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Alien and Aliens are classics. But how do the other sequels, prequel and spin-offs compare? We try to rank them in descending order...

Ranking any franchise is a personal and difficult process, but the Alien series represents its own challenges. Were you more affected by the intimate shocks of the 1979 original, or the more action-led 1986 sequel? Were you impressed by Alien 3's commitment to its bleak tone, or irked by its soupy darkness?

You're sure to have your own opinions as to how the Alien movies should be ranked, though we'd wager that, like us, you'd place the Alien Vs Predator spin-offs quite far down the list. But then there's Ridley Scott's prequel, Prometheus, a film some might rank far above Jean-Pierre Jeunet's quirky Alien Resurrection, and perhaps even David Fincher's Alien 3.

Accepting, then, that the ranking below is very much down to personal taste, »

Jesse Eisenberg Sports A Very Lex Luthor-Esque Hairstyle In Now You See Me 2 First Look

19 January 2015 9:22 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

After a surprise turnover at the box office back in 2013, the Four Horsemen are set to return for another bout of might and magic with the release of Now You See Me: The Second Act, and director Jon. M Chu recently showcased our very first look at the ensemble cast for the upcoming sequel.

With Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Jesse Eisenberg and Lizzy Caplan — in lieu of Isla Fisher — on board as the aforementioned tricksters, the film will also herald the return of Mark Ruffalo and Michael Caine, who will be joined by newcomer Daniel Radcliffe who is set to play his son, Walter Tressler. As for story, The Second Act will pick up around one year after the events of the original film, pitting the Horsemen against a new threat as they make a move to pull of their “most dangerous heist yet.”

Not exactly reinventing the wheel, mind you. »
