The Notable Films of 2011: Part One

13 December 2010 7:39 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Back for its third year (see the 2010 edition) and bigger than ever, today kicks off the first in a fifteen-part look at the various cinematic releases hitting the U.S. in 2011. Each 'part' contains brief descriptions and editorial opinion/analysis of varying length covering twenty films. Expect the remaining ones to go up between now and the first major releases in mid-January.

Like all cinematic lists set within a timeframe, there's some overlap. Some films here have already opened worldwide but have yet to hit the U.S., some upcoming films you'd expect to be here aren't because they're either still in development or have already announced 2012 release dates, some were on last year's list but got delayed so have been included again (but with all new analysis).

I confined my list to films that have either set 2011 release dates or had begun/completed production, and only films that have »

Daniel Day Lewis cast as Abraham Lincoln in Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’

21 November 2010 6:16 PM, PST | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Nope, this isn’t the proposed Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter we discussed the other day.  Although that too would be awesome.  Could you imagine Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln, running around killing vampires while screaming about milkshakes and whatnot?  Ah, cinema nirvana.  But this is just as good.  More info on this ‘Lincoln’ and why it’s so amazing after the jump.

Spielberg’s been trying for a long time to get his Lincoln biopic off the ground, but lack of funding has caused the production to spiral into nothingness, even losing its star, Liam Neeson.  When Neeson left, everyone thought the film was dead.  Neeson was perfect for the role, and there was no other actor who could ever match him.  But now they have one of the best actors ever as his replacement.  And with that, the film has a new lease on life.

Daniel Day-Lewis Is Spielberg’s Abraham Lincoln

19 November 2010 3:00 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

With the merest whiff of Oscar accompanying it the news broke today that Daniel Day-Lewis is to take on the role of Abraham Lincoln in the much delayed Spielberg project.

He won’t be hunting vampires, nor will the film focus on the final moments of his life, but the casting of Day-Lewis in such an iconic role conjures up some wonderful images and it’ll be a long wait to see this on the big screen.  Liam Neeson stepped down from the role a few months ago and Spielberg’s search for a man who would be President has ended with a fine choice.

With his Tintin film and the ambiguously titled Robopocalypse on the cards, as well as the recently filmed War Horse, there’s a lot of Spielberg in our future and that’s just fine with me. Below, in the press release, the man talks about the role and the actor. »

19 November 2010 11:20 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Earlier this year, Liam Neeson dropped out of the title role in Steven Spielberg’s long-in-development Abraham Lincoln biopic, Lincoln.  DreamWorks has now issued a press release saying that Daniel Day-Lewis will play the role of our 16th President.  According to the press release, the film is still based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s excellent book Team of Rivals with a script by award-winning writer Tony Kushner.

The press release also notes that “Filming is expected to begin in the fall of 2011 for release in the fourth quarter of 2012 through Disney’s Touchstone distribution label.”  That’s curious since, as we reported earlier, Spielberg was planning to direct an adaptation of Robopocalypse in January 2012.  Presumably, that project has now been pushed back.  Hit the jump to check out the press release.
