8 December 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Music video helmer David Nelson has been tapped to direct the comedy The Car Thief for Mario Lopez and Lou Perez's Checkmate Entertainment. A spring start is being eyed on the Michael Addis-penned project, which is described as a twist on Trading Places. It centers on a thief who steals a film executive's car, swiping a prized screenplay as well as the victim's identity in the process. Car Thief was brought to Checkmate by Roberts/David Films partners Mark Roberts and Lorena David, who will produce. Yvette Yates will oversee development of the project for the company. Nelson is repped by APA, Nine Yards Entertainment and attorney Howard Fishman at Armstrong Hirsch Jackoway Tyerman and Wertheimer. He has directed videos for Da Brat, Coolio, R. Kelly and Tupac. Checkmate launched in October with partners Lopez and Perez running operations with the goal of producing two films annually in the $10 million-$20 million range. »

Britney Goes "Sensual and Sexual"

11 September 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Pop princess Britney Spears is promising her new album will be a deeply "sensual and sexual" affair. The LP, which includes collaborations with R Kelly, Sean 'P Diddy' Combs and Moby, is her first release in a traumatic two years that have seen the break-up of her parents' marriage, her split from long-term boyfriend Justin Timberlake and tabloid allegations of sexual indiscretions with a string of celebrity suitors. And Britney embraces shedding former wholesome, virginal image - marked in startling clarity by her lingering onstage smooch with Madonna at the MTV VMA awards last month - with her much-anticipated new album. Her joint effort with controversial soul star Kelly, a track called "Outrageous," lives up to the promise of its title. Lyrics include the line, "Oh, it's so hot, and I need some air, boy, don't stop, 'cause I'm halfway there." A collaboration with Moby shows further signs of a more mature Britney. The singer describes "Early Mornin'" as being about "going out at night and feeling like s*** the next day". But Britney insists her new sexier image isn't a reflection of a steamy personal life at the moment. She says, "Of course I'm not doing 'Baby One More Time' and those big, massive hits anymore. I think this record is where I'm at right now in my life. It's sensual, it's sexual. I'm probably writing about that subconsciously because I don't have that right now." »

Grammy triumph pumps Jones CD

Hot on the heels of winning eight Grammys, Norah Jones' Come Away With Me jumps back to No. 1 with a 331% sales increase. The Blue Note release sold 621,025 units for the week ending March 2, compared with 144,250 the previous week, according to SoundScan figures obtained from industry sources. Jones' blend of pop and jazz proved stronger than R&B and hip-hop. Controversial star R. Kelly's Chocolate Factory (Jive) falls to No. 3 from No. 1 on 237,850 units sold, while Eminem protege 50 Cent's debut, Get Rich or Die Tryin', holds at No. 2, adding 423,025 copies. Half-million punch in at Kelly's 'Factory'

27 February 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

R. Kelly's sixth solo album Chocolate Factory debuts at No. 1 on more than a half-million copies sold, despite the fact that the R&B singer still faces child pornography charges in Illinois and Florida. While many music industry insiders were skeptical that Kelly's career could survive the controversy, Chocolate Factory (Jive) -- fueled by the hit single "Ignition" -- sold 532,400 units for the week ending Feb. 23, according to SoundScan numbers obtained from industry sources. Kelly pushes rap newcomer 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin' (Interscope/Aftermath) to No. 2 after two weeks at the top. »

R. Kelly Arrested on More Child Porn Charges

23 January 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Troubled R'n'B star R. Kelly was arrested in Florida yesterday on additional child porn allegations. Authorities in Miami say they found 12 photos of a nude girl at the home of the singer, who is currently awaiting trial on child porn charges in Chicago. The Polk County Sheriff's office, with the assistance of Miami-Dade police, arrested the singer at the Grand Bay Hotel in Coconut Grove, where he had been staying. Kelly was in town to shoot a video for the remix of his latest single, Ignition. Authorities say the charges stem from the discovery of child porn images during a search of the singer's rented Davenport residence in June. That search was conducted during his initial arrest in Polk County on an Illinois fugitive warrant. Then two search warrants were executed at his home, and 12 digital images were found that depicted an underage female. Three images also depicted Kelly involved in sexual conduct with the female minor, say authorities. Kelly was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Facility before he posted the $12,000 bond - $1,000 per count. The singer's spokesperson Allan Mayer says, "At this point, it looks to us like a classic case of piling on, in which a local jurisdiction tries to make headlines by attaching itself to a celebrity case. As far as we can tell, the charges all relate to R Kelly's arrest last summer. In other words, there is nothing new here." »
