Anchor Bay Sinks Its Teeth Into Heckerling & Silverstone’s ‘Vamps’

18 April 2012 1:51 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Amazingly, it’s nearly 17 years since director Amy Heckerling’s Clueless reached our cinema screens. An updated retelling of Jane Austin’s Emma, the much beloved and hilarious film, made a star of a young Alicia Silverstone in the lead role of Cher Horowitz.

Well fans can rejoice that Silverstone, whose promising career really sank after the abomination that was Batman & Robin, has reunited with director Heckerling for comic-horror Vamps. News also comes that the film has been picked up for North American distribution by Anchor Bay.

Vamps will centre on the romantic exploits of a pair of female vampires, played by Silverstone and former Breaking Bad beauty Krysten Ritter, in modern-day New York. The familiar looking cast also includes Sigourney Weaver, Wallace Shawn, Malcolm McDowell, Kristen Johnston and Richard Lewis.

There is currently no release date set for either the UK or Us, but fans of Clueless (a comedy »

Acquisition News: Anchor Bay Picks up Vamps and Focus World Nabs Extraterrestrial

17 April 2012 2:53 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Two fairly promising genre films found homes today: Anchor Bay has acquired the rights to Amy Heckerling’s supernatural comedy Vamps, which stars Alicia Silverstone and Krysten Ritter, with eyes on an October theatrical release. Focus World has picked up cult filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo’s alien invasion tale Extraterrestrial for a limited theatrical and VOD run beginning on June 15. Hit the jump for more on both films, including full press releases. Described as a “comedy-fantasy-romance”, Vamps sees Silverstone and Ritter playing two modern-day bloodsucking BFFs living in New York; amidst suppressing their urge to slurp human plasma and navigating the dating scene, they find their friendship tested by love. Director Heckerling turned Silverstone into a pop-culture icon when the pair worked together on 1995’s Clueless. The initial marketing for this one seems to be playing up the “Clueless with vampires” angle, which I can get on board with (especially with »

Jesse Tyler Ferguson To Appear In Theater Sitcom

17 April 2012 5:42 AM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

New York — Jesse Tyler Ferguson of "Modern Family" might be a star now, but he remembers those awful days sweating it out in front of casting directors.

"I've had many horrible, horrible auditions. They're tucked away. I try not to remember them. There are too many to name, actually," he says, ruefully. "You go into those situations desperately needing that job. Whether or not you want it or not, you need it to survive – you need the paycheck."

Ferguson is revisiting his lean early years in a cameo for "Submissions Only," a new online scripted sitcom wrapping up its second season that takes a hysterical behind-the-scenes look at the life of New York theater hopefuls.

Ferguson will join some of Broadway's brightest lights who have made appearances in the series, including Kristin Chenoweth, Chita Rivera, Cady Huffman, Lindsay Nicole Chambers, Annaleigh Ashford, Max von Essen, Kristen Johnston, Adam Pascal, Michael Urie and Hunter Foster. »

Film Review: Delightful ‘Life Happens’ Proves Truth is Funny

15 April 2012 9:10 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Is it possible to be addled in encroaching middle age? Because “Life Happens,” a film about an ex-party girl turned single mother, starring “it” girl Krysten Ritter, actually is quite funny, and gets those laughs simply by applying some simple truths to a unique situation. Kate Bosworth, Rachel Bilson, Justin Kirk and Kirsten Johnston co-star.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

Ritter, who just opened this week as the title character in the awkwardly titled sitcom “Don’t Trust the B—— in Apartment 23,” carries this comedy on her shoulders, which she also co-wrote. She is an impressive scene stealer, but also allows the very strong supporting cast to get their moments. The script relies on some time honored stereotypes – twentysomething virgin, chirpy Mom, horny social misfit, dismissive boss – and turns them on their ear by leading them into unexpected directions. All of the actions of the films evolve from well-established background circumstances, and by »

In Theaters: 'The Cabin In The Woods' Hopes To 'Lockout' 'The Three Stooges'

13 April 2012 8:58 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Happy Friday the 13th everyone! Jason is putting on the hockey mask and black cats everywhere are doing wind sprints to make sure they won’t miss you when you walk past. Not sure how to beat all the bad luck? Try going to the movies (and leaving your umbrella at home)! Toads and goldfish aren’t allowed in theaters and there are no mirrors to break or cracks in the floor to step on. Plus, the horror, thriller, romantic comedy, and documentary films coming out this weekend should provide great distraction. But be sure to bring some salt with you. Just in case.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Friday the 13th without a horror flick. Our requisite scream-a-minute release is “The Cabin in the Woods,” from first time director Drew Goddard, best known for writing “Cloverfield.” The film is co-written by Goddard and Joss Whedon, creator of the »

Review: 'L!fe Happens' One Tiresome Subplot At A Time, None Of Them Worthwhile

11 April 2012 12:55 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

In a recent New York Times profile by Margy Rochlin, Krysten Ritter, ex-model and co-writer/star of “L!fe Happens,” talks about the film as her labor of love. She flinches when mixed reviews are mentioned, claiming the film “shouldn’t be reviewed” and “All that anybody should say about this film is ‘Good for you, girls, go get ‘em.’ -- and that it’s adorable.”

The very first scene in Kat Coiro’s romantic comedy features Ritter and Kate Bosworth as best friends Kim and Deena, simultaneously bursting from their respective bedrooms in their underwear, asking each other if they have a condom. With both underequipped, they raid the house until Deena finds a sole prophylactic, forcing Kim to engage her lover sans protection. The next scene, one year later, again features Kim and Deena, who share a gorgeous two-floor house in sunny Los Angeles, as they cruise in »

Life Happens, from director/co-writer Kat Coiro, is a comedy centered on three young women – Kim (Krysten Ritter), Deena (Kate Bosworth) and Laura (Rachel Bilson) - who all live under the same roof in Los Angeles.  When one of Kim’s one-night-stands results in an unexpected pregnancy, she turns to her girlfriends for help while she attempts to cope with single motherhood and jumping back into the dating scene amid the fear that having a child could put a quick end to any potential relationship.  The movie also stars Jason Biggs, Justin Kirk, Kristen Johnston and Geoff Stults. During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, the film’s star and co-writer Krysten Ritter talked about how this movie came together, the changes it went through in nearly four years of development, how happy she was with the final outcome of the film, and what she learned from this entire process and experience. »

Andy Cohen on 'SNL': Did Taran Killam miss the mark?

9 April 2012 12:25 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Despite already having his own show and being an executive vp for Bravo, Andy Cohen can now say he's officially made it: "Saturday Night Live" took on the "Watch What Happens Live" host this weekend portraying him as egocentric, squirmy and kind of dumb.

"Omg the one night I go to bed early I'm lampooned on SNL?! Great job I am flattered! #ImLikeAShark #VeryCute," Cohen tweeted.

The skit was amusing, but did "SNL" cast member Taran Killam totally miss the mark on Cohen's persona?

Radio host Ben Harvey tweeted, "You are much more butch than they portrayed you last night, fyi!"

Cohen responded with, "yeah I know I'm not Clint Eastwood but....??"

Actress Kristen Johnston tweeted, "If only the guy playing you had actually thought abt his "impression'...I thought it sucked. He dint say 'sweetie'!"

And some fans and Cohen pals thought it was just plain mean.

Amy Heckerling Talks Vamps and More!

9 April 2012 11:55 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Amy Heckerling's new horror comedy Vamps recently screened as part of the BAMcinématek series this past Saturday, and Heckerling had a lot to say about blood, Twilight, and more! Read on.

After the public Q&A (which was described as "awkward"), New York Magazine's Vulture caught up with Heckerling, who had lots more to add. See the highlights below.

How her vamps sustain themselves...

“The idea was that you live on blood, but it doesn’t have to be human — although human is probably way enticing, which is why Goody [Silverstone's character] is tempted by the drummer’s nose bleed. And it can’t be blood that’s old or stored, it’s got to be flowing. Blood probably tastes like salty water, right? You’ve cut yourself and tasted it, right? If you take the blood-drinking out of the equation, it’s just about sublimation of sex. I was more interested in eternally young, »

Kristen Johnston, the towering comedic actress best known for her role on "3rd Rock from the Sun," may bring the laughs on TV Land's "The Exes," but in reality, the star has been battling some serious personal issues.

Johnston recently penned a powerfully honest memoir, "Guts," in which she writes about her miserable school years, her rise to fame and, most stunningly, her addictions to drugs and alcohol.

The actress, 44, who has been working to establish the first sober high school in New York City, chatted with The Huffington Post about her new book and overcoming her serious struggles.

In "Guts," you write about suffering a terrifying medical scare. What happened?

Starring Donald Faison, Wayne Knight, David Alan Basche, Kelly Stables and Kristen Johnston, The Exes revolves around a trio of very different divorced men who live together in an apartment owned by their female divorce attorney.

The Exes TV series debuted in November to a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.435 million total viewers. The numbers have dwindled in the past month or so but TV Land is still happy enough with the show's performance to renew it for a second season.
