She studied acting at the Atlantic Theater Company Acting School in New York City. The School, located in Chelsea, was founded by David Mamet and William H. Macy, and teaches the technique "Practical Aesthetics", which Ms. Johnson uses. She is currently a member of the company at the Atlantic, and sometimes performs in shows during their season.

Kristen Johnston played "Sally Solomon" on the hit television series, 3rd Rock from the Sun (1996), for which she won two Emmy® Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. In TV Land's original sitcom, The Exes (2011), Johnston plays "Holly Franklin", a divorce attorney and landlord to three of her former clients, who happen to share the apartment across the hall from her own.
Johnston was nominated in 2010 for a Drama Desk Award (outstanding lead actress in a play) for her performance as "Lily Darnley" in the hit production of "So Help Me God!", which ran at the Lucille Lortel Theater in New York. She is a longtime member of the Atlantic Theater Company. Johnston's other theater credits include "Love Song" on the West End, "The Women" on Broadway, "Much Ado About Nothing", "Twelfth Night" and "The Skin Of Our Teeth" at the Public Theater in Central Park. Off-Broadway productions include "Baltimore Waltz" and "Aunt Dan and Lemon" and Atlantic's productions of "The Lights" by Howard Korder at Lincoln Center, which earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination (best supporting actress), and "Scarcity" by Lucy Thurber.
Johnston has appeared on numerous TV shows including ER (1994), Ugly Betty (2006) and Bored to Death (2009). She also had a memorable turn as "Lexi Featherstone", the party girl who falls out of a window on HBO's Sex and the City (1998).
Kristen Johnston made her screen debut in the short film, The Debt (1993), which won a number of awards at international film festivals, including the 1993 Cannes Film Festival. Her other film credits include a cameo role in Finding Bliss (2009), Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000), Strangers with Candy (2005), Music and Lyrics (2007) and Bride Wars (2009). Johnston teaches acting, both privately and at NYU (the Atlantic Acting School), and released her first book, "Guts", for Simon & Schuster.
