Producer/Musician/Entrepreneur, and half of the most successful duo in
modern music history. Alongside his longtime partner Terry Lewis, Jimmy's
accomplishments have elevated him to iconic status as a living legend
within the music industry. Together, the duo have been steering pop
artists to unprecedented commercial success for almost 25 years, most
notably by guiding Janet Jackson to International super-stardom with over
50 million records sold worldwide and over 20 Gold and Platinum singles.
Jam and Lewis have also collaborated with such diverse and legendary
artists as Boyz II Men, Sting, Mary J. Blige, Elton John, Usher, Shaggy,
Yolanda Adams, Herb Alpert, Luther Vandross, Rod Stewart, New Edition,
Human League, Earth, Wind & Fire, Mariah Carey, Robert Palmer, Gwen
Stefani, Kanye West, Willie Nelson, Jessica Simpson and Sounds of
Blackness. From pop, soul, dance and instrumental to rap, gospel, rock,
country and reggae, their distinct sound has spanned limitlessly across all
genres. In total, they have written and/or produced over 100 albums and
singles that have reached Gold, Platinum or Multi-platinum sales, including
25 #1 R&B singles and 16 #1 pop hits."
The duo has been no stranger to critical success either. In 1986, Jam &
Lewis won their first Grammy for "Producer of The Year"; and they haven't
looked back, scoring 10 more "Producer of The Year" nominations since. Infact,
their recent 2006 "Producer of the Year" nomination marked the sixth consecutive year they
were honored. This year Jam & Lewis won a Grammy for "Best Gospel Song" for writing Yolanda Adams #1 selling "Be Blessed". Jimmy & Terry also won a Grammy in 2003 for "Best Dance
Recording" for Janet's "All For You". Moreover, Jam & Lewis have been
awarded with Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, NAACP Image Awards,
Essence Awards, and were chosen the "TJ Martell Humanitarians of The Year".
As songwriters, Jam & Lewis have received over 100 ASCAP Awards, and are 9
time "ASCAP Writers of The Year". Their place in pop culture was firmly
cemented as the duo were immortalized with a Star on the "Hollywood Walk of
Fame".
Jimmy Jam has also parlayed his vision into entrepreneurial endeavors,
beginning in 1991 with Perspective Records, home of the Grammy Award
winning Sounds of Blackness, and following with Flyte Tyme Records in 1997.
As co-founders of Flyte Tyme Records, Jam & Lewis enjoyed a joint
venture/partnership with Arista/BMG Records, which lead to successful
collaborations with Blu Cantrell and Heather Headley, as well as Multiplatinum
superstar Usher. Their goal has always been to develop musicians
of superior caliber and support their artistry above all else. "We would
rather sign people and make records based on artistic freedom rather than
approach it from a corporate perspective and put pressure to sell a lot of
records," Jam has stated.
In Spring of 2006, fter nearly 25 years of making hits in Minneapolis, the legendary duo sold their historic Edina Mn. Flytetyme Productions studio and relocated to a brand new state of the art Flytetyme facility in Santa Monica Ca.
In 2007 Jam & Lewis and Flytetyme will toast another groundbreaking milestone as their company marks it's 25th year of business, and Jimmy & Terry celebrate 35 years together as friends.
Since their first professional recording with THE TIME in 1981, Jam &
Lewis have never failed to successfully re-invent themselves, and they
continue to be the embodiment of career longevity. Without question, the
duo has firmly left it's mark on modern music history as the #1 Songwriting
and Production team of all time.
