Rollback Review: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1

20 September 2017 1:54 PM, PDT | The Cultural Post | See recent The Cultural Post news »

“In every generation, there is a chosen one. She alone will stand against the Vampires, the Demons, and the Forces of Darkness. She is the Slayer.”

There must be about a million films, stories and TV related content that contains one particular scene. A vulnerable young woman, running for her life, terrified of whomever, or whatever, is pursuing her. She is utterly helpless to prevent her oncoming, horrible death – and most of the time is scantly clad. The scenario ends one of two ways – she either meets a terrible fate, or ends up getting saved by a dashing, Harrison Ford look alike male hero. Rinse, lather, repeat.

It once looked like that would be all we’d get from female characters in horror related productions. That was, until, a young writer came along named Joss Whedon, who decided that enough was enough. He had an idea of a young woman »

The 25 Best TV Comedy Ensembles of the Last 25 Years, Ranked

9 August 2017 5:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

A great ensemble creates a mysterious bond between a show and its viewers. The chemistry shared on screen brings with it a certain level of comfort.

But to refer to this quality as some kind of supernatural power does a disservice to the men and women who forge it. There is the talent of each individual performer to consider: If any of them falter, the whole dynamic falls apart. It’s a dynamic that requires work, too. Whether it’s bonding in real-life or being a good listener on set, chemistry is a science for these casts; it’s made, not found.

Then there’s the versatility of expanding these connections beyond just one or two cast members, but an entire ensemble of six or so series regulars. The best ensembles work no matter who’s paired up in a scene, and it feels like the TV can barely contain »

The Completely Random Connection Between Piper's Mom and Larry on Oitnb

20 June 2017 10:35 AM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Image Source: Netflix Prior to season five of Orange Is the New Black, it had been a while since we saw Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) reflect on her relationship with Larry Bloom (Jason Biggs) in a flashback, and it brought us right back to the cringeworthy early memories of the couple. In the first episode of season one, before dropping off his then-fiancée at Litchfield Penitentiary to serve her 15-month sentence, we saw Larry and Piper tell her family about her drug money escapades with Alex Vause and that she'd be going to prison. While Piper's dad wonders if Larry knew she was a lesbian, we were left wondering why this situation looked so familiar. Answer: Carol Chapman, played by the actress Deborah Rush. It turns out this wasn't the first time Biggs faced his soon to be mother-in-law in an awkward living room setting. In 2003's American Wedding, Biggs's »

Kick-Ass Women Flex Their Small-Screen Muscles

Thanks to grass-root actions including last winter’s women’s march, there’s been an increased focus on exploring women’s intellect. But a scan of programming choices across the television dial suggests that we also care about their brawn.

From NBC’s “Blindspot”to AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” recent years have seen plenty of heroines who can handle a roundhouse kick or brandish a katana while still landing piercing dialogue and saving the day while picking up a paramour or two.

Blindspot” and “Supergirl” executive producer Sarah Schechter would like to see even more shows like them because “diversity and representation is so important so that people can feel inspired.” Among Schechter and producing partner Greg Berlanti’s latest projects is the upcoming CW series “Black Lightning” which follows a retired superhero who gets back in the game on the insistence of his teenage daughter.

Pot TV: Celebrate 4/20 By Watching the Most Memorable Stoner Shows

20 April 2017 9:41 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

It’s not a federally recognized holiday, but the peaceful spirit of April 20 – otherwise known as the marijuana-enhanced 4-20 – is one worth celebrating. While still technically an illegal substance in most areas of the world, some of our favorite TV shows are clearly enhanced by being under the influence. Pot imbues them with a certain sensibility that may heighten the mood, even without chemical assistance.

Here are some of our favorite series, all available on streaming services, that acknowledge weed as a normal part of life for many Americans (even though a lot of the characters on this list probably shouldn’t be described as “normal”).

“Bored to Death”

Jonathan Ames’ HBO comedy was a celebration of both pot’s mellow and extreme mind-altering states. On the one hand, a little bit of suspension of disbelief was needed to buy into the oddball adventures of Jonathan (Jason Schwartzman), a novelist turned unlicensed private investigator. »
