Men Of A Certain Age 1.01 "Pilot" Recap

12 December 2009 4:31 AM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Let me go on record now by saying that I am a 26 yr old African American male and Men of a Certain Age slightly scared me of what life could be one day. But to be honest, I felt that the show touched on points that I am actually experiencing now in life.

In short, the show is great.

The Set Up

The first of the guys we meet is Joe (Ray Romano), who wakes up in a hotel room at exactly 6:00 am to recite his morning wake up call and guess the temperature for the day. Apparently he has been staying there for a while. He looks into the mirror in his bathroom with a blank, knowing stare that says, "Who am I and how did I get here?" What a tone setter.

TV Review: ‘Men of a Certain Age’ Promising But Off to Dull Start

7 December 2009 10:20 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The mid-life crisis of the modern man is mostly about ego - as the body goes downhill and the role of the alpha male is supplanted by a new version of himself, men kind of fall apart as they realize that their peak has arguably passed. Why would such an individual experience make for intriguing drama? Using the mid-life crisis as a jumping off point for drama would require some seriously well-drawn characters, the kind of guys who you root to come to terms with passing over that hill. “Men of a Certain Age” does not yet have those characters.

Television Rating: 2.5/5.0

Stars Ray Romano, Andre Braugher, and Scott Bakula are undeniably talented actors who have all found massive success in television on shows like “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “Homicide: Life on the Street,” and “Quantum Leap,” respectively. Watching them play characters in decline, one can’t help but think »

A Beastly Trailer Comes Our Way

23 November 2009 12:26 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

No doubt hoping for the kind of blind faith that Twilight fans show at the box office, CBS Films has provided the trailer for its new Beauty and the Beast redux of sorts, Beastly.

Synopsis

Kyle Kingson (Alex Pettyfer) has it all – looks, intelligence, wealth, and opportunity – and a wicked cruel streak. Prone to mocking and humiliating “aggressively unattractive” classmates, he zeroes in on Goth classmate Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen), inviting her to the school’s extravagant environmental bash. Kendra accepts, and, true to form, Kyle blows her off in a particularly savage fashion. She retaliates by casting a spell that physically transforms him into everything he despises. Enraged by his horrible and unrecognizable appearance, he confronts Kendra and learns that the only solution to the curse is to find someone that will love him as he is – a task he considers impossible.

Beastly Title Treatment and New Photo

27 October 2009 4:29 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Not to be outdone by The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which unveiled its logo artwork earlier this week, CBS Films, the company behind Beastly, revealed the slick title treatment for its upcoming edgy teen romance ... and provided a new photo of the film's "beast", played by Alex Pettyfer.

First up, the title art. Be sure to click it (and Pettyfer below) for a larger, more detailed image.

As a reminder, here's a synopsis of the film, followed by Pettyfer, pre-transformation:

The folks behind the upcoming edgy teen romance Beastly provided three new stills along with a more detailed synopsis of the film today. One photo show us Vanessa Hudgens looking quite lovely and in the others Alex Pettyfer reveals himself ... literally.

Charity Screening of The Soloist

15 September 2009 11:55 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

We've just been sent through information about a charity screening on 22nd September of Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx's new movie, 'The Soloist'. After the screening, director Joe Wright (Atonement / Pride and Prejudice) will conduct a Q&A with all proceeds from the evening going to Shelter, a British charity set up to help the homeless. The Soloist also stars Catherine Keener, Tom Hollander and Lisa Gay Hamilton. I've embedded the trailer after the jump and the synopsis is below. For more information on the evening and to book tickets, head on over to the Cineworld website.

Synopsis: In “The Soloist,” an emotionally soaring drama about the redemptive power of music, journalist Steve Lopez (Oscar® nominee Robert Downey Jr.) discovers Nathaniel Anthony Ayers (Oscar® winner Jamie Foxx), a former classical music prodigy, playing his violin on the streets of L.A.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Soloist’ Wastes Powerful Story, Great Actors

11 August 2009 10:22 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Stars Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. do absolutely nothing wrong in Joe Wright’s “The Soloist,” now on Blu-Ray and DVD, and there’s more than enough inherent power in the story of a musical genius lost to mental illness and the horrible way we treat the homeless in this country for a quality drama, but this cinematic solo misses too many notes to have the impact that it should have with this much talent involved.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 The cast & crew list for “The Soloist” is remarkable enough that the film almost opened the AFI Film Festival last year based on pedigree alone. Then someone saw the movie and Joe Wright’s third drama (after “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement”) was pushed from Oscar season to April. We should have known something was wrong then.

The Soloist was released on Blu-Ray on August 4th, 2009.

Kevin Carr’s Weekly Report Card for 04.24.09

24 April 2009 1:22 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The Soloist Studio: DreamWorks Rated: PG-13 for thematic elements, some drug use and language. Starring: Jamie Foxx, Robert Downey Jr., Catherine Keener, Tom Hollander and LisaGay Hamilton Directed by: Joe Wright What it’s about: Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx) is a musical prodigy from Cleveland who attended the Julliard School. However, his schizophrenic condition caused him to drop out and eventually end up homeless in Los Angeles. When journalist Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) discovers him on the street, he uses his column in the L.A. Times to bring national attention to the man’s plight, hoping to better his life. What I liked: Robert Downey Jr. has had a banner year, starting with Iron Man last summer and continuing with Tropic Thunder, which earned him an Oscar nomination. He continues his string of excellent performances with his role in The Soloist. Likewise, Jamie Foxx also has proved to be a fine actor and shows his »
