'The Practice' Dismissals "So Unexpected"

26 May 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Lara Flynn Boyle and Dylan McDermott's removal from TV show The Practice came as a complete shock to the cast and crew - because they were only expecting pay cuts. The screen stars are two of five regulars on the legal drama who were axed from the show last week by producer David E. Kelley after a season of declining ratings. And axed cast member Lisa Gay Hamilton, who was the first to get the bad news from Kelley, says McDermott and Flynn Boyle were totally unaware of their upcoming dismissals. She recalls, "David called all of us individually and spoke with us. When I heard it was David on the phone, rather than say hello to him I said, 'You're firing me, aren't you?' Why was David calling me - was it to come over for dinner? He paused and then I really knew. He said, 'Well, I don't like to use those words, exactly.'" She adds of McDermott, "Like everyone else, he was hurt by it, because it was so unexpected. He didn't have a clue and none of us had a clue." Camryn Manheim, Michael Badalucco and Steve Harris are among those who remain with the show - which didn't make the last day of work with the full cast comfortable, says Hamilton. She adds, "Michael, Steve and Camryn felt terrible - it's awkward, terribly awkward. Once the day had ended and we all knew we were pretty devastated." »
