'Elf' at 10: Jon Favreau Reflects on Buddy's Magical Legacy

24 December 2013 8:10 AM, PST | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

It's hard to remember now, but there was a time before Elf was everywhere – on frequent cable rotation, Broadway, and everyone's DVD shelf of classic Christmas movies. There was a time when Will Ferrell was not a surefire comedy movie star, and when Jon Favreau was the guy from Swingers who had directed some little indie films. But they set out to make a modern holiday classic, one that would rub shoulders with such perennial favorites as Miracle on 34th Street and TV's Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer – and they succeeded. »

The X Factor Season 3 Performance Finale Recap: Dream Until Your Dreams Come True [Updated]

18 December 2013 7:39 PM, PST | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

From the opening seconds of The X Factor‘s Season 3 performance finale, you knew it was going to contain more hot air than a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade float.

Alex & Sierra hovered above Los Angeles in a helicopter, like contestants on The Bachelor (albeit ones with an actual talent beyond dramatically declaring “He/She isn’t here for the right reasons!”). Jeff Gutt mounted a motorcycle on a mountaintop, put on his helmet and zoomed into the sunset. Carlito Olvrrrrr (Paulina’s pronunciation, not mine) strutted out of a chic hotel and into the back of a limo.

The top 25 underrated films of 2003

18 December 2013 5:29 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Odd List Ryan Lambie Simon Brew 19 Dec 2013 - 06:30

Our journey through the lesser-known films of the 2000s continues. This week, it's 2003...

It was the year that Arnold Schwarzenegger went from Terminator actor to Governor of California, and when The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King dominated the global box office with a gross of more than $1bn. 2003 was also the year the Wachowskis' Matrix trilogy thundered to a close, the year Freddy Krueger clashed with Jason Voorhees in, er, Freddy Vs Jason, and the year Pixar scored another hit with Finding Nemo.

But as you've probably gathered by now, 2003 was also a year of quite brilliant, less lucrative films. The movies we've included in this week's list were chosen for a variety of reasons - some were ignored in cinemas, while others were harshly treated by critics. Some were modestly popular or given awards on release, »

NBC Looks to Build on Fall’s Bounty in Q1

16 December 2013 2:12 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

As NBC counts its holiday blessings this month, the Peacock is getting ready for its toughest assignments of the 2013-14 season.

NBC has seven scripted series on the bench awaiting midseason launches, including high-profile drama entries from Alfonso Cuaron and J.J. Abrams (supernatural drama “Believe”), the “Chicago P.D.” spinoff from Dick Wolf and the Dermot Mulroney-Gillian Anderson starrer “Crisis.”

The challenge for Bob Greenblatt and Co. is to capitalize on the momentum of the fall and the platform of February’s Winter Olympics to get at least some of these shows off to a fighting start. And while all that’s going on, NBC has to manage the Jay Leno-Jimmy Fallon transition at “The Tonight Show” and reroute Seth Meyers from “Saturday Night Live” to “Late Night.”

The good news leading into the midseason crunch is that NBC’s circulation is up signficantly this year, »

Macy Gray & Ernie Hudson Join Cast Of 'The Grim Sleeper' (Based On Serial Killer Case)

9 December 2013 10:07 AM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

Macy Gray and Ernie Hudson have both joined the cast of the Lifetime network's original movie The Grim Sleeper, which is based on the case of Los Angeles’ notorious “Grim Sleeper” serial killer. Dreama Walker will star in the film, which will be directed by Stanley M. Brooks, from a script written by Robert Nathan (Law & Order) and Teena Booth (The Drew Peterson Story). "Grim Sleeper" is the nickname for an alleged serial killer believed to be responsible for at least ten murders, since 1985. The attacker was dubbed the "Grim Sleeper" because he appears to have taken a 14-year hiatus from his crimes, from 1988 to 2002. On July 7, 2010, a suspect, Lonnie David Franklin »

Martin Freeman: from Slough to Smaug – then back to Sherlock

6 December 2013 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

The actor is about to appear in the return of BBC1's Sherlock and Peter Jackson's blockbuster sequel The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

There was a scene in The Office in which Tim Canterbury, the benign sales rep played by Martin Freeman, compared his life to a roll of the dice.

"My situation now may only be a three. If I jack that in, go for something bigger and better, I could easily roll a six," he told the programme's faux documentary maker. "I could also roll a one. Ok? So I think … just leave the dice alone."

Freeman, who will star alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the eagerly awaited return on New Year's Day of BBC1's Sherlock, and as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's blockbuster sequel The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug next week, has just rolled a double six.

It has been an extraordinary rise for the 42-year-old actor, »

Lifetime Sets Grim Sleeper Movie With Dreama Walker To Star; Stanley M. Brooks To Direct

Exclusive: The case of Los Angeles’ notorious “Grim Sleeper” serial killer is getting a TV movie treatment with Lifetime‘s The Grim Sleeper starring Dreama Walker (Don’t Trust The B—-) and co-starring actress-singer Macy Gray (Training Day), Ernie Hudson (Call Me Crazy), and Michael O’Neill (Dallas Buyers Club). It will be directed by Stanley M. Brooks in the veteran TV movie producer’s return to the genre. In 2010, Brooks left the TV movie business after 21 years when he filed for bankruptcy as a result of a dispute with AFTRA, WGA and DGA over residuals from the Logo series Sordid Lives. Since then, he quietly took on a new career as a director with horror indie Perfect Sisters, which is awaiting release. It is fitting that Brooks’ return to the TV movie business is via Lifetime where he was a top telefilm supplier until severing ties with the »

Movie Marquee of the Week: Thanksgiving Edition

29 November 2013 7:50 PM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

This incredible photograph appeared yesterday on a post on The Wire titled “The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade Balloons Used to Be Extremely Creepy.” I immediately loved the photograph with its Frank Sidebottom-style floating heads but what caught my attention next is the sign just visible behind the head in the middle: a marquee for Josef von Sternberg’s Morocco. Now if there’s one thing I love more than bizarrely primitive helium-filled heads, it’s old photos of movie marquees. And if there’s one thing I love even more than that, it is examining the often-missed details of old photos and looking for clues to their place and time. (Anyone who’s a fan of Shorpy will know what I mean.)

The only specific detail on the original post is that the photo was taken in 1930, a fact that the Morocco marquee confirms. This means that it was »

The top 30 underappreciated films of 1999

20 November 2013 7:26 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Odd List Ryan Lambie Simon Brew 21 Nov 2013 - 05:51

The underappreciated films of 1999 are the focus in our last list of 90s overlooked greats...

The year 1999 was a significant year for film in many ways. Apart from being the year that George Lucas began his Star Wars prequels with The Phantom Menace, it also saw the release of The Blair Witch Project, a horror film which became one of the first to use the internet as a marketing tool, resulting in a massive hit. The Matrix ushered in a new age of special effects filmmaking, arguably paving the way for the superhero blockbusters crowding into multiplexes today.

Mainly, though, 1999 was simply a brilliant year for film. Justly lauded movies like Fight Club, The Green Mile and Eyes Wide Shut aside, there were a huge number of films that didn't get the critical or financial success they deserved - so many, »

Terrence Howard, Macy Gray Will Co-Star In Indie Drama About Homeless Men Paid To Fight

Terrence Howard has booked a starring role in Knate Gwaltney's feature film debut, the indie drama titled Cardboard Boxer. Howard joins Thomas Haden ChurchBoyd Holbrook, and Rhys Wakefield, in a story about a homeless Los Angeles man who becomes the target of a group of rich, troublesome teens get their kicks paying homeless people to fight each other. I recall a real-life news story about something like this. The privileged paying the underprivileged to fight each other, while they video-tape to eventually upload to video sharing sites like YouTube. Such nice kids today, huh? I'm guessing Gwaltney's film is inspired by this. Macy Gray is also part of the cast. No word yet on what characters exactly each actor has signed up to play. Michael Witherill is producing and financing through his Mjw Pictures company, with Michael Roiff also on as a producer. Howard can currently be seen in Prisoners, »
