Vince Gill was born on April 12, 1957 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA as Vincent Grant Gill. He has been married to Amy Grant since March 10, 2000. They have one child. He was previously married to Janis Oliver Gill.

He began writing "Go Rest High on that Mountain" for Keith Whitley who died of alcoholism, but completed it after his brother died as a tribute to both men. He wrote "It won't be the same this year", a Christmas song, about his brother, and "The Key" about his father.
